Goddamnit Dankwolf, those pots... sure am jealous. I too want swimming pools full of plants. Unfortunately for me, sneaking around in the forest at night dressed in black hoping I don't get mauled by a bear is my best bet..

On another note: if I build wire cages for my plants, will the animals still mess with the soil if I add bone & blood meal 2-3 weeks before planting (not the usual 1month+)? I'm guessing a wire cage isn't a big obstacle for a bear, but who knows...

That should work. Once I had a raccoon climb in and got himself trapped so now I close the top of the fence in like a pyramid. Once I got there he somehow enclosed the top of the fence in trapping himself while trying to get out I believe. Then he dug himself a little crater in my soil but I always bury the chicken wire because of moles. At first I was pissed because I had no backups started but I pulled the fence up and he scattered away. This was a time when I would fertilize the soil and plant right away, if you let it sit a couple weeks then cage your plants when you plant you should be fine.

I'd say 3 feet. I don't know about your location, but I really only need them for the first few weeks. A fresh planting ensures they'll get dug up without a cage. Once I see a few mangled cages because some animal tried to get under it, it's safe to pull the cages (if I want. I usually leave them).

Mix up a batch of potent pest repellent, remove a cage and give the base a spray. You'll know if it works.

Cheers TychoM, I've only got two plants so wont take any risks.. Im pretty sure it's only rabbits that can get up there, Ive not seen evidence of deer. I leave a few more weeks and get some repellent or just remember to save a wee up for when i'm there next.

Then just replace your cages with 12 inch cages. That's pretty stealthy. I assume you're using chicken wire. If you are, make sure you bend the pointy bits pointing outward for the curious.

Oh man, not sure if I feel bad for the raccoon or put the blame on him... We don't have raccoons over here but plenty of deer, moose and critters, the odd bear and a wolf pack or two. I had planned on closing them off. I'm heading out today to do some additional recon and possibly some evening digging. Got my seeds today so am feeling quite eager to get started now!

I'm having a hard time deciding on whether to go with wire cages and bone/blood meal or skip both.

Here too. But I look at it this way. Winter is struggling and almost out of breath. We usually get one last dump in April. This year, just a whimper. I hope that translates into a warmer season compared to last year where spring and summer were cold as shit.

Thinking if a 6 week veg before out planting would be too much. Would be on 15/9 light schedule to mimic out planting june 1st. Never had good luck starting seedlings outdoors.
