Stop using Clonex!

PGRs (Plant Growth Regulator) like IAA, NAA, IBA, etc., are nothing to be sacred of. And in fact, the plant readily makes the very same PGRs that are in Clonex, in apical "source" tissue and translocates them to root "sink" tissue. In the case of taking a cutting the PGRs pool at the basal end, assisting formation of new roots. So, those of you who are worried, you better stop growing cannabis, and all other plants for that matter! ;)

FWIW, use of PGRs is not needed, if using a good cloning method, because the plants makes the PGRs that are needed for cloning.

well to be honest I was waiting for you spurr, so I'll have to respond :D

what do you have to say about the adhesive materials and the INDOLE-3-BUTYRIC ACID contained in Clonex??
Why is INDOLE-3-BUTYRIC ACID place in the HAZARD CLASS 6.1 (toxic)?

I thought clonex was that stuff in boxes I blow my nose on.

For rooting cuttings I use the cheapest brand of powder with the most Indole Butyric Acid (IBA). [Like the bigboys use in commercial greenhouses]

The reason peat pellets or pots filled with peat are so good is because there are naturally occuring fungi and bacteria which help prevent pathogens like fusarium and give the cutting a kick start of nutrients. Also, in all liklihood there are naturally occurring IBAs.

bingo.

all this started with the OP talking about genetic damage, right .... no source, nothing .... it's a cloneing gel guys. i don't think one is to much different from the other as far as active ingredients is it? and that should apply to most dips and powders too....... i thought.

cool new ways on how to clone in the last few pages but genetic mutations ?????

the source would be nice ....... just saying

The 'stuff' (gel) that is the mass of Clonex is most probably inert, maybe with some anti-microbial chemicals. What it is, I am unsure, but it's not exotic IMO. If it were, the price would be much higher I assume. I bet a Google search of EDU sites, or a SCIRUS search, may provide a 'how-to' for making rooting hormone 'gel'. IIRC, I did read how most 'gels' are made, but I can't recall right now.

The biggest worry with IBA is inhalation or ingestion, but if you use Clonex, you won't have those issues. Trans-dermal issues may be a worry, if so, use surgical gloves. I use powder form of IBA and NAA, when I mix up rooting solution for a 60 second basal dip. I use a surgical mask (filter) when doing so.

The time to worry about using IBA is when it is in power form, and fairly pure (esp. if it's very fine powder). In such a case, a surgical mask should be used, as well as goggles or glasses (for splash protection if mixing as stock or working solution). Use of gloves is also wise, IMO.

When a plant makes IAA in apical tissue, some of the IAA gets covered to IBA. It's IBA and NAA, that are most helpful to induce formation of root cells. I read a couple of studies that found exogenous (from without) application of IBA (like a basal dip or using Clonex) can speed time-to-root formation, and endogenous (from within) IBA can take over from there.

However, in my areated-aerocloner I see little difference in time to first root formation, to transplant time. With my setting for rooting cuttings, they are ready to transplant in ~7-9 days.

Here is an MSDS, much health info can be found there:

Below is info from Sigma-Aaldrich (98% pure IBA):
  • Health issues:
    • Acute toxicity (oral, dermal, inhalation), categories 1,2,3

  • Risk statement:
    • 26: Very Toxic by inhalation
    • 36: Irritating to the eyes
    • 45: May cause cancer

I agree, IMO this thread was started for the sake of spreading FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt), or maybe due to misunderstanding of the OP.

However, it's true IBA is thought to possibly be a cancer causing agent, but AFAIK that's only when inhaled (or ingested). It's very toxic if inhaled in sufficient quantity, and of sufficient purity.

meanwhile, some guy that doesn't have the internet is using rusty scissors and tap water, and doing just fine... ;)

Clonex, and most other clone jel brands make clear statements on their bottles. They say things like " for use on ornamental plants only" or "not for use on plants that are intended for human consumption"

to quote the clonex bottle exactly "This product is not intended for use on food crop sites"

clonex wont even claim its safe to use their gel on your plants.

i still use it though, ill probably switch to a more organic method when i run out.

I still think its really funny how many people are on here like " it works great and i havent gotten cancer yet so im gonna keep using it "

I dunno. For fun, I recently cut about 16 clones.

8 got cut with a razor and then a second cut under water and then clonex and then peat pellet.

8 got cut off the tree with a razor and then stuck in a peat pellet.

They all got put in the same clone room with same lights, same water, same temps, etc.

They all started rooting about the same time.

No apparent difference between clonex and just plain nothing.

Just sayin'.
