I'm intrigued by the defoliation concept. What's the real idea there? Just to divert the energy to the flowers?

And if I understand correctly, the deal is to just take off all major fan leaves?

Significant yield-increase? More of a good-housekeeping task? Halp!

Wondering if I oughtta just do an Agent Orange number on what I've got.. A mystery gal (Blue Dragon or Blue Dream) at 5.5 weeks, and a Purple Diesel & Green Candy at about 3.5 weeks..

lol... Preventative maintenance primarily... Those fans start to yellow, wilt, and wither into the plant. If you don't catch them, that decaying plant matter can feed all sorts of things you don't want growing in your room. Secondarily, increased light penetration... The light can penetrate all the way to the bottom of the plant, for full bud development up and down the plant.

You just have to create the optimum environment, and the plant will grow itself. The plant naturally diverts energy to the buds in late flowering, that's why the fans die, naturally... Unless they're loaded with N... So since the roots are full of starch after 4 weeks, the fans aren't needed... Take them. Hardly anything is stored in the leaves. The guys that think this makes flushing the plant easier are wrong. If you don't flush, you're buds are still gonna burn like shit. That shit is stored in the roots!

I really wish everyone would go to their local community college and enroll in Biology 131. (not trying to be an asshole here, I'm serious. It answers a lot of questions.)

The leaves are used to take light + nutrients pulled up from the root zone, and convert them to sugar (starch), which then goes through another series of chemical reactions, traveling through the plant, and being stored in the roots.

The fans changing color depends on the particular minerals that remain behind in the leaves... anyway... I think I answered the question.

F*ck yes you did. Good stuff. Really, really appreciate understanding it at that level..

But you raised another question. You mentioned a flush, .. I'm in FFOF, EWC, guano, all that crap (literally). I was under the impression that there would be no need to "flush," (as a dedicated task), and could just water throughout.. ? (I'm really, really giving a 50,000 foot view of the idea, but simmered down, ..)

Am I wrong? Do I need to hike that bitch in the tub and soak'er at some point?

You're plants look good, except I'm seeing a LOT of burnt tips. You juiced those girls pretty heavy, but the fans are yellowing so they're flushing... When the plant gets juiced like that, it stops feeding because of w/e lockout from nutrients being in excess... So then you have to wait for the plant to start feeding again for it to continue growing. Better to keep the plant hungry so it keeps eating and growing. Lots of small meals, just like a bodybuilder... :) Great job otherwise. Looks dank.

Yeah Bobble I definitely went overboard on the feeding. I was giving them about 900-1000ppm and they were green and lush. No burnt out leaves or anything, so I figured they could handle a little more. Gave them upwards of 1200ppm and adjusted the pH and they started to get a little burnt. I kept with the 1200ppm because I was nearing the point where I would be cutting out the FF Tiger Bloom because of nitrogen (about 3 weeks before projected harvest). I have now begun my flush using RO water. No more feeding.

Also, as you can tell I'm still learning quite a bit, but what do you mean exactly when you say "w/e" lockout?

But I think I did pretty good so far considering this is my first real attempt at doing an indoor grow. Everything prior to this was growing indoor mainly to veg and clone to move to the great outdoors. Gotta learn from experience! Also some of my plants don't have any burnt tips whatsoever, but some have a LOT (both strains). I don't know if this is because different phenos have different sensitivity to nutes, because I started with 6 moms, 3 of each strain so there are potentially 3 different phenos of each strain. Maybe next time I will take the time to flower out first to find the pheno that I want.

Thanks for your input, always helpful. Can't wait to see how your Colosseum turns out!

Bobble what does cooling/ventilation for these pods look like? It might have been mentioned, if so Im sorry. Your using AC, Dehumidifier, and at one point heat at night?

If I were to want to keep 1800 watts within 10 degrees, would a strong enough fan be able to handle it, or would AC assistance be needed?

DHF helped me, and now I get to help all you people! You guys don't know how much I like helping others, so keep the questions coming... The personal satisfaction I get is almost better than the feeling I get come harvest time... lol

Well I don't know too much about organics... But from my understanding, all you ever give your plants is water? b/c you soil is ammended with the guanos? If that's the case, then there is no need to flush, the plants should just use up all the nutes... Unless it's a hot mix.

The only difference between organics and synthetic is that the ions (nutrients) have been chelated, which makes them more readily bondable with the roots. Organic nutrients need a healthy colony of beneficial bacteria to break them down and make them ready for bondage with the roots. It's all a bunch of chemical reactions you don't care to know about... But basically I want as few things other than my plants growing in my room as possible... So I go with synthetic. Organics and dirt is for the outdoors.

Anyway, all that being said... If you feed with teas... well that's supposed to jump start the break-down process, right? So no I wouldn't feed a plant a guano tea all the way through... but I don't do dirt.

w/e mean "whatever"... If you're juicing your plants, something is in excess and so it's going to get locked out, b/c the plant has too much. That's all. Keep em hungry. Great job for your first grow. Mine wasn't nearly as nice... lol

yeah there's pictures back in there somewhere... Filter the posts by me, and you'll have it all in front of you.

I'm using a heat exchange system with a water chiller. I also have 2 435cfm inline fans exchanging the air 2x a minute... Cooling and heating depends on your area...

General FYI

I'm not maintaining a 3F temperature difference anymore... It got hot here fast 80-90F outside... And I'm swinging more like 10F. I'm working on bringing it down... But it's a whole new setup...

I have all the bells and whistles. Heating, cooling, dehuey, pond-fogger humidifier, and a whole hell of a lot of fans. Air exchange 2x a minute, and controllers for everything...

I like that analogy;

"Keep them hungry, a lot of small meals, like a bodybuilder."

Makes sense how heath n dhf could pull that weight, n never over~750ppm or 1.5ec, they know their shieet!

I am looking to feed a very airy coco filled smartpot 2-5 times in flower if they are able to dry out almost fully in between feedings.

hoping for hydro like growth rates with no risk of root rot (can that still occur in coco?) and why not if it cant?!

rambling :) id smoke a j w ya, then leave cuz ur shit would probably have me paranoid as f*@!

lol... Root rot isn't going to happen in coco, or at least I've never heard of it. The substrate is colonized with beneficial bacteria. Root rot happens when anaerobic bacteria get out of control, normally in a fast hydro setup... Anyway, since the beneficials are living in the coco already, there is no place for the anaerobic bacteria to grow, and if they do grow, they get eaten. I spent a semester in a 5 credit microbiology class looking at these little guys under a microscope... Once I got my staining technique down anyway...

FYI, the best defense against infection in humans is healthy skin, b/c our skin is colonized with beneficial bacteria already... You want to keep the bacteria on your skin happy, and they'll keep out the invaders.. :blowbubbles: We're not so different from our plants.

That's pretty much my growing philosophy... Nurture a child give them food, shelter, clothing... and you watch them grow into a person. Do the same for your plants, and they'll reward you, over and over... Now I'm not promoting kids here... ha ha... Cause I'm not making any babies anytime soon... But just give your plants the best environment possible, and they'll be the dankest plants you've ever smoked. You don't need to have SFV OGK, LVPK, ChemD, ECSD, Headband, The White etc... They all came from a seed that somebody grew, in a room in their house. The reality is that most grows aren't on a warehouse scale. Rezdog doesn't have some amazing breeding palace with gold plated flood tables... ha ha... It's not out of anyone's reach to be an excellent grower, you just have to do it over and over.

High southern temps 90+, To cool 1800 watts during mid summer, what do you recommend for ac size? 18000 btu? ive never grown in this climate. Just about exact opposite. Any help is very appreciated.

If it hasn't already been said, buy this truck Bobble. I'm too lazy to read ahead. But being a 2000 Toyota Tacoma owner I have to add my 2 cents.

idk... Environmental factors are really gonna depend on your particular location. I've never grown in your environment. You have to take into consideration accessory equipment that's going to (or not) generate heat... Like a commercial dehuey that is running all the time right now to keep the humidity down to 45% in a state where you can't go 5 miles w/o encountering a body of water. 18000 btu might cover it... but I would suggest that you oversize your AC, so it's not struggling to keep the temps under control. 3200 or larger would be more appropriate. You might want to look at used equipment if cost is an issue. It was for me, but craigslist and ebay helped sort me out... and some phone calls to hydro stores working out a bulk purchase...

Thanks for the tip! I wasn't considering a Tacoma really... but now I think I've heard good things from other people too... So I'll keep them in consideration.

If it's still available in 1 month... Please believe those purple skunks will turn into a 4x4 w/ 35" tires... :)

I up-potted them into the SmartPots and their roots were just growing OUT of the little 1 gallon I use in the veg tent I have NEVER seen root devlopement like that before!

I am very pleased!

I have no experience with ac's so I wasn't sure what would cool what. I'm about to google and see what I can come up with. I have a few months before my location is ready so I'm just making sure I give myself an appropriate budget.

I would like to do a similar pod set up, but In my given space I may only be able to run 2 600's. If i need that big of an ac, and dehum.

why? The power bill? or available electricity?

Adding/upgrading circuits is really easy... You just buy the circuit, run some wires, and plug it in.

As far as power goes... A larger unit (AC or Dehuey) could use LESS electricity b/c it doesn't have to run as often, b/c it's not struggling to keep up. I say could, b/c chances are they could use more electricity to keep your environment on point... b/c your smaller units couldn't keep up with the demand... and in the end that means a better harvest... So to me it's a win/win situation.

I don't have many financial obligations, so I can throw a little extra cash at my grow to better end results... You're situation might be different. I understand people have families and what not... But my advice to you is if you're going to do it, do it right. Don't risk total crop failure and lose your investment. If running less light means you can keep your environment under control, then do it.
