Hi KJ,

i've never had a problem w/the water 12 hrs, wet paper towel in ziplock bag on top of my router germ method.

if them beans don't sink within 16 hours then they ain't no good.
on second thought - maybe you should scarify them first by putting them in a matchbook with a emory bosr stuck to the bottom, and shaking the thing back and forth. Jorge Cervantes talks about it in his book. 36 hours is too long. something's wrong.

don't know why you had trouble w/spice beans. tempermental. sounds like your water may have been too cold? sounds like those beans like it hot.

Pure looks nice!

cheers

I've heard the bit about the beans not sinking being a bad sign, but I've also heard that it's irrelevant. What to believe? These ones did sink after 24 hours with just a touch of my finger. We now have them in the wet paper towel, inside of a Ziploc and on top of a new seedling heating pad we bought. So they're now nice and cozy, but last time I checked there was no action on the cracking front.

We plan to scratch our beans from now on using just the method you described. Since you can't tell which ones are too hard and which ones aren't, I figure it's best just to scarify them all. It certainly can't hurt as long as you're gentle.

*sigh* I guess we'll be trying yet another group of beans today. Pretty soon, we'll have to order new beans just to get our next 3 plants if these keeps up!

That very well could be it. Now that we have the seedling heating mat, hopefully temps won't be a problem during germination.

Pure looks nice!

cheers

Thank you! We hope you stick around!

p.s. the first time I read your user name (a few weeks ago in another thread, I do think), I laughed out loud!

I like your air pots.Great idea.Good luck to you..

Yes, we love the Airpots so far. They will be real nice when it comes time to transplant; no tipping them upside down, just carefully peal back the Airpot after unclasping it.

Thanks for the good luck wishes!

Hey man, looking good. I have great success with the ziplock bag method too. It's normally 90% or more germ rate for me when I do it that way. I'd love to see more cab pics when you get the upload to work. It's been killing me too.

I sure hope we have some luck with it too! Thanks for coming by. Oh, and you might be interested in my next update.

It's time for another update, this time an exciting one.

Last night we spent a few hours measuring and drilling holes for the ventilation pipes. It didn't take as long as we thought it might, which was nice. The drill hole set we bought was a total POS, but it toughed through this job (and was immediately chucked in the can afterward). Good lesson; don't buy cheap tools, they never turn out good.

This morning we decided to put in 3 new Spice beans. This time we scuffed them using the matchbox-and-Emory board method. We had already placed a cup of water on the seedling mat to warm up, so all we had to do was pop them in, cover the cup with tissue and leave them in the dark to stay cozy on the mat. In 24 hours we'll place them in a wet paper towel, seal them up in a Ziploc and put them back on the mat until they pop. Please send all your good vibes our way that we have successful germination this time around!

The rest of this afternoon was spent shopping for a few odds and ends we needed for the cab. And then the fun part, putting the first coat of primer on the cab panels! We've been painting for hours on end already, and the front side of every panel (plus the edges) has 2 coats of primer/sealer. The paint should sit real nice on it once it dries. I tell you what, painting by hand is seriously hard work! We'll put the first coat on the back side tomorrow evening, the second coat the next evening, and then we'll start painting. We think we can get it all painted in time for assembly this weekend. Cross your fingers!

A quick note to all of you out there who think cannabis medicine should be cheap/free: may I submit this thread as evidence that if you're trying to go stealthy and still do it up right, it's going to cost you some serious coin and time. And it'll cost you your old-ass body if you're anything like me! It's a serious undertaking, but we're loving it! Oh, and I've made some updates to the supplies/cost list in the first post; you might want to check it out.

On to the pics (nothing real exciting, but cab porn has it's place too!):

That's exactly it JamieShoes! I've been handy in my past, but that was like in High School when I still took electronics and shop classes. Since then I've been a white collar worker, and I've lived in places where having a workshop was out of the question, so I've let any skills I might have had fade away. It feels good to be working with my hands again!

Thanks for coming by!

Ah I know what you mean KJ, I've been an office worker for longer than I care to remember (or even can ;-) - although lately I've decided on a different path in life and have left Corpsville for good - I've always pottered about with old Vespas (another passion of mine) and kept my hands dirty that way.... this is turning out to be even more fun though. "Fulfilling" is a nice description :)

can't wait to see your cab when it's done - I think it's going to be a stonker! :D

Fulfilling indeed, in so many ways. It's particularly fulfilling for me because I get to share in it with my wife, something I never thought I'd be able to do when I was in previous relationships. That and it's a medical grow for the both of us, which makes it that much more fulfilling. After a decade of waiting, I'm finally doing something I've always dreamed of!

A stonker you say!? I hope that means "killer" or something...hehe.

We have what looks like liftoff!

It's been 24 hours now since we put the new Spice beans in the cup of water. I moved them over to a whetted paper towel and put the whole lot into a Ziploc placed on top of the warming mat. When I moved them I saw that one had a little white radical peeking out, and the other two looked ready to burst at the seam. It looks like we might succeed this time! Woohoo!

:woohoo:

I was getting worried too. I'm happy that these might work out because we really wanted to do a Spice run our first time out. It's the strain with the most sativa leaning genetics that we own. We really preferred not to do two heavily indica leaning strains. *crosses fingers*

I wish I had pictures for you, but I didn't realize I had forgotten the camera until I was already half way through the process. Didn't want to leave them exposed to light/air too much. I'll try and take some before we put them into rockwool (because they ARE going to pop this time!).

Ugh, I'm sooo frustrated with germing. I thought this would be the EASY part!

So I took a peek this morning at the Spice beans we're trying (once again) to germ. And guess what? They look EXACTLY like they did when I put them in the paper towel! Shouldn't at least the one that is showing a small radical have opened up even further? Shouldn't the other two have cracked open just a tad more? What the hell are we doing wrong!? Or are we just being impatient? It's been nearly 48 hours since we put them in water (and about 20 since we put them in the paper towel).

Also, I'm worried that the seedling mat might be too warm for them; the Ziploc and paper towel feel very warm to the touch. I had thought about this before putting them on there, so I put a layer of 2 additional paper towels between the Ziploc and the mat so as not to put the seeds so close to the heat source. How warm is too warm? The ambient temps in the room they're in is probably around 75 and the mat claims to warm up whatever is placed on top of it an additional 10-20 degrees over ambient temps. Are we safe with this setup?

Also, is it bad to check up on them? They're being kept in the dark, except for that 1-2 times a day when I go in an look at them to see what the latest is. I don't usually open the bag, I just look through it to see if there are any changes. I did open the bag and unfold the paper towel this morning to do a more detailed check, is that a bad idea? How do you all go about checking to see if the seeds have popped when using this method?

Just had to vent, sorry. I'm getting very, very frustrated that we can't seem to germ any more beans. Thank you Flying Dutchman for putting out seeds that popped the way they're supposed to! Yes, I'm starting to wonder if it's bad beans and not our methods that are the issue. I know, I'm probably just shifting the blame for our newbie mistakes.

PLEASE, HELP!

Well, since I didn't get any responses on my last post, we decided to go ahead and experiment with our Spice beans. I looked at them again and this time saw that the only one showing anything had just the smallest part of the radical showing. So, we decided to take that seed and sow it directly into soil.

I prepared a new Airpot, tossed up some of our soil mix with a sprinkle of mic's, and sowed the Spice bean about 1/4" under the whetted soil. I then put it under the lights with the rest of the ladies (you can see it in the group shot below). We're hoping to have some luck with this, but what the hell, we have next to nothing to lose at this point!

We are of course still open to suggestion on what to do with the other two Spice beans. Leave them in the Ziploc another 24 hours? Any ideas? They look exactly the same as they did 24 hours ago.

Here are some pics of the Pure ladies. It's been a while and they sure have changed.

Does anyone know what the yellowing on Petunia's first set of true leaves might be? I'm thinking magnesium deficiency, possibly caused by the fact that only 2 very small roots were penetrating the cube when we planted her. Not enough root mass to suck up the necessary magnesium?

The reason I say that is that until today both Petunia and Peanut's leaves were sticking quite high into the air, or "praying for magnesium" as I read in the organics forum. That and the internodal yellowing, which can be a sign. The other sets of leaves look just fine, and even these ones are healthy looking other than the small amount of yellowing. Any ideas?

Magnesium deficiency?

haha KJ take a bong rip everything is going to be ok its alright that there not popping just yet some seeds are just harder than others for the hot mat problem you got going on

get a towel and place it on the mat assuming its a rather thick towel have two layers between the pad and the seeds then take another layer and place it over the seeds i kinda thought about it and felt bad that i didn't tell you to do this before i was thinking about my mat which actually sucks for heating but in this situation it works or nice because the heat isn't very intense im assuming yours isn't a piece of shit like mine so give that a try and i know you don't want to hear it but maybe you guys got some old or bad stock unfortunately it happens you know but lets not think negative just yet give them another 48 hours and let see what happens
