I use 1 watt because that is what I bought ~ 3 years ago as a total light noob. Since doing so, and not getting good results (it is R/B ~8:1), I upped my grow game while learning about lighting in general. I bought a Quantum Bad Boy 8 bulb HOT5 (432w)+ aquarium bulbs to approximate what actinic led diodes are touted to do. Fast forward 2 grows, and give me a good white any day, as a primary bulb, then supplement with pinks and magentas

While males are prone to 'bigger is better', circumstances prevented me from getting on that bandwagon. During that time I came across various low watt led threads that made sense to me. Keep in mind that the more powerful the light, the farther from the plant it needs to be. Seems counter-intuitive to me

Living in S Florida I can tell you there is a huge difference to one's skin when exposed to too much wattage (summer sun). Sun worshipers have dark leathery skin. Beyond the obvious burn, with the high probability of constant exposure causing skin cancer, too much sun wattage saps one's energy. So what is it doing to the plants?

Many are also hung up on 'more watts' to achieve penetration below the canopy. Well, the solution is NOT more wattage, it's more panels positioned at different heights and angles. 3-5 panels @ ~ 20w = ~ 100w, scattered around the plants at different distances below the one over the canopy is far more efficient. The plant does not have to waste energy developing sunblock to protect itself

NOW, that awareness is also being combined with some real science (+ R & D) as to what the proper mix of one watt diodes is to maximize grow efficiency.

I am beginning to think that big-ass primary leaves are a response to too much light intensity (especially during veg), and/or a combination of the wrong spectral balance.

I have noticed them shrink, but did not put 2 + 2 together that once I was providing the spectral balance they need/prefer, they backed off. Where they looked very Indica like, they now look very Sat like.

Warm Weather Slowing Flowering

Warm Weather Slowing Flowering

Not that things are bad, but tric production has slowed due to 80* days, and low 70* nights

Due to pic limitations I will divide this into 2 Replies, HOT5 + LED

1-3 are from HPA

Sorry about the root porn. Can't focus with one hand on the trigger, the other holding up the top

3/4 F & D

The top cola is > 8". Note the lower branches are > 2ft below the bulbs. I am rotating this plant so they get some of the supplemental cfls

LED Tent Update Plant + Clones

LED Tent Update Plant + Clones

Due to warm weather, temps inside 2 X 4 X 5 tent are 80-85 during day

Clones are growing well. They were taken in early flowering, thus the clusters. I added a 50w Reptile Halogen to kick up root development, but as of yesterday will manually engage fr just a few mid-day hours as it drives tent temps > 85*

Top cola is ~ 10"
. Bottom buds are super tight. Sorry about the pix. Dirty lens?

Hey pet,
Cool set ups but I guess I am missing the KISS part of all this. A DWc system or standard F&D seems so much easier to build and use than your systems. I Do like your systems but how are they easier for new growers to use?

WTF? Did you bother to read from the beginning? I am running 3 different hydro systems. All are DIY KISS

Whoa lil fella did you read my post In which I stated that these are nice setupS and that I like them???. I did read the whole thing but I was inquiring about...Ahh forget it sorry I asked.

Each one IS simple. If you don't find them that way, do not attempt hydro

Rounding 3rd Heading for Home

Rounding 3rd Heading for Home

I had planned to harvest by now (waning moon), but ...

Still dealing with warm temps, yesterday high was 84, overnights low-mid 70s. Later in the week it's supposed to 'cool' off (like 5*s) big woop. Waning moon not until Dec 30th, not likely to wait that long

In spite of this, trich growth is good, but no cloudy or amber trichs yet.

I cut ppms back to 250 with Friday's nute change. Since then, bud mass is exploding as are trichs

This morning I decided to do a little bulb swapping in the HOT5 tent

I replaced the ZooMed Florasun and 1/3 UVL RedLife with one UVL 660 and one Wave Point Coral Wave.

A few days ago, I swapped a 23w warm white cfl for a 10w ReptiGlo on the supplement bar

Hopefully this brings it all home

LED Tent

Plant is finishing faster than HOT5

Went to full flush down from ~ 320ppms

Trichomes are more fully developed. Most look like a golf ball on top of a T

HOT5

Not far behind, maybe 4-5 days. Plenty of sugar, just not a lot of Ts

Harvest Time

Harvest Time

HPA/F&D

Pulled the small cola from HPA Tuesday. Sampled a quick dried bud. Gonna be killer

I added a 50w reptile halogen in hope of increasing trichs on remaining 2 plants which are 1-2 days away from harvest

LED

Pulled her this morning. Pics are from yesterday

Also 5 clones now getting proper blend of light as well as amount- they were getting 11.5, now upped to 14 hours

Quick Summary

Quick Summary

Just harvested her this morning (3 days shy of 4 months from germed seeds). Weight is with primary leaves and main stalk

Unknown Sat dominant strain, but exc saved seeds.

Grown under a combination of a 3 yo UFO 90 ~ 8:2 R/B one-watt diodes +

supplemented with a vanity fixture, with a combination of low watt screw bulb leds- ww/cw/bw (all one watt diodes)

Clones have been in same tent, not getting proper amount of light, or intensity, as they have been sharing the 2 fixtures.

I am guessing I have ~ 80 total watts total

If dry weight is 2 ounces I'm at 0.7 g/w

3 more Days To Harvest

3 more Days To Harvest

Whenever possible I germ on a new moon and harvest on a waning moon. The others I pulled prior to waning moon because they were ripe, and I did not want to go longer. I also approximate light amount/intensity & spectrums as they exists outdoors from seed through harvest

My DIY 21st Century Flood & Drain

This is the last of this grow (aside from clones). This is the biggest of the 4, also has the most side branching. She is very sticky to the touch.

She has been finished under 1 UVL 660 + 3 UVL Red Lifes (~ 215w) for over a month AND on < 150 ppm for 10 days, and yet the trichs keep coming :groupwave:

I hope the pics show the sticky goodness

interesting your success w UV

often wondered on this since outdoor plants would be subjected to UV on a daily basis

probably the best approach to have a fairly small component of the spectrum in the UV range? but; it seems like you have quite a bit
