MIAMI — In the minutes before his bizarre face-eating attack on a homeless man, Rudy Eugene was seen swinging naked on a light pole along the MacArthur Causeway "acting like Tarzan," according to a motorist who called police.

The call, made 20 minutes before Eugene was shot and killed by a Miami police officer who found him chewing the face off 65-year-old Ronald Poppo, was one of two new emergency calls released by police on Tuesday.

The new information provides a fuller account of the sequence of events leading to the lengthy May 26 attack, which was captured in part by security cameras on The Miami Herald building.

Eugene beat Poppo and stripped off his pants before gnawing on the homeless man's face in an attack that lasted about 18 minutes, the Herald security video shows. Eugene was shot by Miami police officer Jose Ramirez about seven minutes after the officer was dispatched to the scene.

But the initial calls to police about Eugene gave no hint of the grotesque tableau the officer finally discovered.

Police got the first call at 1:53 p.m. EDT Saturday from a motorist who reported a "completely naked" man swinging from a light pole along the causeway "acting like Tarzan," according to a recording released Tuesday.

About a minute later, a second caller reported a man "naked as a jaybird" alongside the road.

The Herald's security cameras captured Eugene walking naked east on the sidewalk along the causeway before stopping beneath the Metromover train tracks - a shady spot where Poppo was known to doze. The time on the Herald's security tape is 1:55 p.m., but this time might not be synchronized with the times recorded by police dispatchers on the 911 calls.

Eugene appeared to beat Poppo for several minutes before he rolled the homeless man along the sidewalk, tore off his pants and hunched over Poppo's torso, the tape shows.

The most alarming call to police came at 2:04 p.m. from a passing bus driver who saw Eugene beating up Poppo.

"It's a naked man beating another man, beating him, on the MacArthur Causeway, like toward the Miami Herald. ... He's gonna kill that man, I promise you, OK?" the bus driver told dispatchers.

Miami police would not say precisely when they first dispatched an officer to the scene, or how long it took for the first officer to arrive. But Detective William Moreno, spokesman for the Miami police, said the response time was "not out of the norm. Very average."

Joe Sanchez, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol, said the first Miami police officer was dispatched at 2:06 p.m. - as a state trooper also headed toward the scene.

The first motorist call about the naked man on the light pole had been transferred to FHP, not Miami police, Sanchez said. At the time, the troopers were going through a shift change; by the time a trooper went to the scene, Miami police were already on the way, he said.

According to the Herald security video, Officer Ramirez approached the scene at 2:11 p.m., driving his patrol car the wrong way up the causeway off-ramp, but turned around before reaching the scene, which was obscured by a security wall. About two minutes later, the officer turned back up the off-ramp again and drove up to Eugene and Poppo, who were on the sidewalk.

The officer quickly drew his weapon after walking up on the pair, and shot Eugene. A witness said Eugene still would not stop chewing on Poppo. The officer fired again, killing the 31-year-old attacker.

Ramirez remains on administrative leave with the department. Poppo remains hospitalized.

Carl Jacquneaux Bit A Chunk Of Face Off Victim Todd Credeur In Louisiana, Cops Say

Another gruesome attack over the weekend involved one man allegedly biting off a piece of another man's face -- and like similar cases, this one, too, involves "bath salts."

Louisiana man Carl Jacquneaux, 43, allegedly attacked his neighbor, Todd Credeur, in Lafayette Parish over an undefined domestic issue, KATC reported.

"During the attack, the suspect bit a chunk of the victim's face off," Scott Assistant Police Chief Kert Thomas told the station.

Credeur said he was working in his yard when Jacquneaux showed up and attacked him. Credeur said he defended himself by spraying wasp poison in the man's face.
Pictures show a large, bloody hole in Credeur's cheek.

Police said that Jacquneaux left his victim's house and showed up at another acquaintance's home and held him at knife point before stealing a handgun, according to the Shreveport Times.

A friend of Credeur's, who told KATC that he knows Jacquneaux, said the alleged assailant was using bath salts. But police may never know because they never performed a field sobriety test on the man before he was taken to jail.

Bath salts -- chemicals legally sold in head shops and other small stores -- can cause hallucinations and paranoia, among other symptoms. The amphetamine cocktail has also been connected to the incident in Miami where a man was shot and killed while chewing off more than 75 percent of a homeless man's face.

Jacquneaux was charged with aggravated burglary, battery, violation of probation, and violation of protective orders. He was held on a $312,500 bond.

Credeur was released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

sitting here wondering if bath salts fuck up your head that bad or if people who are fucked up in the head are more prone to using bath salts.

anyone want to place bets on how soon the first "recovering bath salt addict" shows up on Good Mornig America or Dr. Phil

looks like some DICK in a lab actually found something worse than meth ......

bath salts are generally chemical compounds that are not outlawed aka reserach chemicals

that mimic many of the more mainstream drugs like lsd ecstacy

thats the way LSD and MDMA started too. then they hit the streets and got thrown on the list.

thing is there is a huge difference in what we are hearing about what this garbage does to your head. hippies going blind staring into the sun or trying to fly off the 5th floor sounds harmless compared to crazed idiots chewing on other humans.

you know the news back in the day would have been all over the face chewing stories, so chances are it didn't happen.

just kind of wondering if it is the drug or the people doing it now ...:dunno: ..... times have sure as hell changed. i cant picture me and my friends splitting up a sheet and saying " maybe one of us is going to get so sideways that he attacks another one of us with his teeth .... that would be cool". i'm not really sure i could get in a fist fight while i was tripping unless i was forced too. the thought attacking someone with your teeth while you are eating mushrooms sounds kind of strange (read : never happen)

bath salt won't be making my bucket list

^^^^ In that video they dont show it but in the behind the scenes of it, they tell the people they were chasing it was fake after they scare them, i thought it was funny lol.

And i have seen other videos on youtube of people having "bad trips" on bath salts, and non of them seemed like they would or were trying to cause harm to anyone but them selves. Most of the bath salt users once arrested admitted to being suicidal.

Man gets 27 years for 'bath salts' attack in Biloxi

Robin Fitzgerald | Biloxi Sun-Herald

BILOXI -- A man who said he was under the influence of "bath salts" when he attacked a Biloxi resident during a burglary has been ordered to prison for 27 years.Ricky Dale Reed, 33, of Vancleave, was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to burglary of a dwelling and aggravated assault with a knife.

The bath salts are not the cosmetic kind used for soaking in a tub. They're a designer drug made by "street chemists" as a stimulant similar to meth and cocaine, and have been linked to violent, psychotic episodes nationwide.

"We have seen an alarming growth in the illegal use of bath salts over the last couple of years with some horrible consequences to those who use it and to innocent bystanders who often become their victims," District Attorney Joel Smith said.Reed's crimes in Biloxi occurred Aug. 30, 2010, at a home on Popp's Ferry Road while Reed was on probation for conviction of burglarizing a home in Jackson County, Assistant District Attorney George Huffman said.

The evidence showed Reed went in the house of an acquaintance through an unlocked back door and appeared to be under the influence of a drug, Huffman said.

The resident told police he woke up about 5 a.m. and felt a knife cutting the left side of his neck. The commotion that followed woke up the man's girlfriend and they were able to scare Reed away, but before Reed left, he begged the wounded man to let him sew up his cut, Huffman said. The wounded man was treated at a hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening.

Circuit Judge Lisa Dodson sentenced Reed to 20 years in prison and suspended eight years, leaving 12 to serve, followed by three years of post-release supervision.

She ordered Reed to serve the prison term consecutively to a 15-year sentence for violating his probation on the burglary in Jackson County. That gives Reed a total of 27 years to serve. The assault occurred months before Mississippi lawmakers banned the sale of the synthetic drug.

Most recently, Miami police suspect bath salts were involved May 26 when a naked man was found chewing on a homeless man's face. He was shot to death when he refused to stop, according to wire reports.

In Mississippi, a Fulton man made headlines last year after telling authorities he was high on bath salts when he took a knife and slashed his own face and stomach.

In a different case, state investigators have said a Pontotoc man had bath salts in his system after his arrest in the fatal shooting of a Tippah County deputy sheriff in December 2010.Data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers shows 6,138 bath-salt emergencies reported in 2011, compared with 303 in 2010. More than 1,000 have been reported this year through April 30.
