Ubuntu and Sun Virtualbox kicks YOUR ass

so after using ubuntu for a couple days i'm not impressed. left clicking randomly and frequently doesn't work and i have searched around and other people have the same problem with no solution. i might have to shell out some dough for a copy of windows or maybe try a different version of linux. :tree:

also movies lag like shit (full screen movies especially), they played flawlessly on windows

edit: fixed movie problem http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=767795

Gamers, good luck using Ubuntu! Enjoy all the install error messages and driver incompatibility :)

I'm sticking with Windows. Fuck microsoft. I steal enough of their shit to even out the 200 or so i'll spend on Win 7.

A word of advice for any computer science students here; if you contact Microsoft and ask them for a free copy of Windows 7 and Office, they should give send you a free copy of each. I managed to, and my entire class got a free copy too. I know you can just download it, but I think it's always nice to have a legit copy with packaging and such.

after my Acer (windows supported) notebook crashed for the 5 time losing half of my written assignments i was going to go back to typewriter (i'm no good with compies...sorry!) and a friend of mine installed ubuntu on the crashed notebook (windows stopped booting) and by some sort of magic retreived all my works (as well as porn i thought i had deleted...ok too much info there i just hope it will make you laugh)
as i said
i suck at computers
but i've been using Ubuntu8 for a whole year and i never had any kind of problem, for anything i just access the comunity and solve any kind of issue i might have understanding the processes and hardware...

having a few issues with ubuntu and flash, but overall ubuntu is more stable than windows xp(32-64) and vista(32-64)IMHO. i run a dual boot ubuntu and vista 64.... the only time i go into my win partition is to retrieve saved data. i haven't played with win7 much yet, but it seems better than vista so far. it looks like they fixed the ram issue in win7 as well as used (more like stole) some linux features. if i was still a gamer i might stick to windows for it's ease of use, but i dont have to time to play games any more :) it's a matter of what works best for the user.

Apple creates hardcore vendor lock in, once your apple, your stuck. No choices.

Apple hardware or ELSE! No thanks, I'd rather build an equivalent machine for 1/4 the price, keep your shiny case.

Restrictions are the reasons I don't recommend apple products. No choice, no freedom.

Microsoft creates hardcore vendor lock in. Once you go MS, you're stuck, no choices.

Microsoft proprietary software or ELSE! No thanks. I prefer open standards. Create a file on a Mac, you can access it anywhere. Create a file using MS's proprietary formats, and you're stuck.

Want to digitize some music? Mac will produce an AAC file which is an open standard. On MS you will get their proprietary audio format (WMA) that require MS or MS-licensed software to listen to. Or how about a movie? MS will create an MS proprietary video format (WMV). And don't even get me started with MS on the server side. You're stuck forever paying exorbitant per-user fees. Mac server software is the same low cost for unlimited users, and it's Unix-based so very compatible. Or how about something as simple as printing a document to a PDF file. Built-in on the Mac, but MS doesn't want you to use someone else's open format. Oh no. You have to buy 3rd party software just to perform that basic function.

So all things considered, I'd rather be locked in to hardware than to software.

You can do pretty much everything on a Mac that you can with Windows. Mac's just cost twice as much, and aren't quite as compatible.

Anyone considering the Mac OS should look up "Hackintosh". You might not need to spend a bomb on overpriced hardware to run OS X if you can run it on a machine intended for Windows instead.

having a few issues with ubuntu and flash,

Adobe is still working out their holes on all OSs due to recent bad press,
but the latest version is working fine even on my old ass shit

try this for 32bit Karmic:

in terminal

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

add this line

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu karmic partner

close and will be added to repositories.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

restart your browser and head to http://www.averybrewing.com/
to see if it works

for 64bit Karmic:

in terminal

wget http://queleimporta.com/downloads/flash10_x64_en.sh && sudo chmod +x flash10_x64_en.sh && sudo sh ./flash10_x64_en.sh

restart your browser and head to http://www.averybrewing.com/
to see if it works

For people looking to check out Linux or find a flavor better to their liking I recommend distrowatch.com. FreeBSD8 just came out and VirtualBox got an update yesterday too!

I love the Ubuntu meta packages.

1985 called. They want their outdated myth back.

True, Apple doesn't make bargain-basement machines. But in the markets in which they compete, they are comparable in price to similarly-equipped PCs. At the high end, they are significantly cheaper than even Dells.

I really don't agree. Take the $1,000 macbook. A 10 second search finds a Toshiba Satellite w/ superior hardware for $599.

What's the extra $400 for? Because their licensing practices won't let you install the OS on any hardware you don't get from them. Maybe when the architectures were different that was OK, but now the only reason I can see to do that is because they want to juice consumers. Say what you want about Windows and Linux, but I can install them on anything that will run them.

That's simply not true. In a couple of minutes I found a PC that blows away the high-spec 27" iMac and costs less. I'm sure you could also find an example of a PC that costs more than the iMac with equal or inferior hardware specifications, but if you spend 5 minutes looking you'll find many that are much cheaper.

I'd have to agree with Tony Aroma :) It is hard to find the same hardware and software for the same price. You are forgetting windows does not come with audio production software for free or video production software or a lot of other software. You are also all forgetting the 40% education discount which I'm sure most of you can take advantage of? I looked at the closest laptops to the macbook and couldn't find any I could better even with a load of warez installed to give the same software + a few viruses from using warez im sure ;)

Barney Fife: Linux users don't play!

There are many games engines out there though perhaps not for the latest games but I'm wiser to buy brand new things I don't need just to fit in with the cool crowd and keep babylon afloat ;)

Are you talking about the iMovie and iDVD software? If so, from what I've seen of them, they're basically Windows Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker. There's plenty of freeware that does the same job too.

With that 40% education discount, buying a Macintosh still works out more expensive in most cases. Windows 7 is only $30 or £30 to students, and Microsoft Office Ultimate is only £38 to students (which is about a 90% discount off the top of my head, or free to computer science students, like I mentioned before). Student discounts are great, but both major software players offer them.
