if anyone wants to give ubuntu a try without formatting, use wubi. it's a windows installer and sets everything up for you. when it's done you'll have windows and ubuntu on dual boot.

If your gonna bag on linux dont do it because you struggled through an install 10 years ago.
I'm talking from an experience with the 9.10 release of Ubuntu a few weeks ago. I didn't botch the install procedure at all. I had to hook up another monitor (that thankfully was compatible) and use that to install the Openchrome drivers to stop my original display from being an incomprehensible scrolling blur of squares and lines.

By all means people try it, but I bet almost every person that does will go back to Windows after a couple of days.

Ok yeah your right lets shitbox the whole Linux thing because your one-off monitor didnt work right away...

May I ask the make and model of this particular monitor?

prolly have a monitor that no one uses for desktop or terminal uses, or maybe this is a laptop your talking about since openchrome is mainly for via chipsets which are commonly in netbooks or htpc.

if so the netbook version of ubuntu is for small screens.

if they go back its because they dont want to learn, but learning is easy thru google.

people should learn linux, its much faster to learn than windows.

and they will be safer.

and if you went straight back to windows after a small setback then that would be your problem not linux's.

is this the monitor you're having trouble with?

oh SHIT! Look to the far right in the monitor - it's like a primitive form of internet porn

The particular issue I had was with the monitor built into a Samsung NC20 netbook. The external monitor which had no display problems in Ubuntu was a Cibox C2202.

Regardless of my problem with the monitor, for the vast majority of users (probably around 90%) Linux is inconvenient and a waste of time. As I said before, the only marketplace I can see Linux dominating is on servers where the advantages of Linux become relevant for the majority of users. Businesses don't want to use Linux because of the inferior support, extra training for staff in some cases, and lack of Microsoft Office (yes, I know about Open Office), and end-users don't want to spend time learning how to use a CLI interface just to install their favorite programs (assuming they even work on Linux). Using Windows pretty much ensures that everything will work more or less how you want it to. It's intuitive, user-friendly, and compatible.

well did you use the Netbook version of Ubuntu??

You cant really be mad at Ubuntu for not being perfect on a Netbook even if you didnt use the netbook version., I seen tons of problems with windows and netbooks those plus the regular inherent problems in winblows. Point is Netbooks just came out..

Basic Support is free on linux and their pay support is always superior to microsoft.

Linux workers make more money and are more efficient.

Anything you can run on Windows will no doubt run on Sun Virtualbox inside Linux.

These Business you speak of may not want to use Linux because they want low paid workers to do a basic job.

Low paid workers arent used to Linux and have prolly never heard of it.

Fortune 500 Business all have open source in there somewhere. and for a good reason.

Im sorry but pretty much after windows vista all os systems suck. My relative has owned a computer store for 20+years. I have seen every os starting with dos and windows 98 is the absolute best for stability all other windows versions suck suck suck. and linux has such bad problems because nobody recognizes their genius and the greater population still supports windows which supports the government in ways that would scare you. You are definately safer from leo without windows ill just put it that way. I run windows still tho I hate all the operating systems they all suck

well did you use the Netbook version of Ubuntu??

No. There was no need to. The only sailent differences between the standard release and the netbook remix was that the remix was modified for use with a small screen (mainly the 7 - 10 inch screens; the NC20 has a 12.1 inch screen, so this wasn't really necessary), and was optimised for the Intel Atom processor (the NC20 has a Via Nano processor).

mala I would make a live CD of the 8.04 Hardy Heron distro - it's like fail-less on ANYTHING. You can also have an "official" copy sent to you from Ubuntu, for free of course. With some cool stickers.

It's true about the userbase though. Windows users tend to be lazy and lack a desire to learn and improve ;) Got far too many of them at work and they really do fuck shit up! If they could just think instead of acting like a fecking drone ;)

Hey guys. I feel I should throw in my two cents. I partitioned my harddrive a while ago with the intention of trying ubuntu for the first time. And i have to say, its pretty awesome, but its just not that compatibile yet. I had a voodoo at the time, with some pretty random hardware and had a real issue getting the right drivers. My sound still doesn't work under any build of ubuntu. (Havent tried it with other distribs of linux). Anyway basically I just find that linux is really really awesome, but it just needs to get a little more popular to become mainstream. Windows still rules the world in terms of compatability and thats key in this day and age. Althougth ubuntu is getting there... Linux amazes me though, the whole idea of being able to recompile your kernel or whatever you fancy doing is amazing. Just needs a little more backing and Im sure it will take off.

dogscot you have onboard audio and an audiocard too?
if so turn off the onboard in your BioS.
only thing Ive seen be a problem with ubuntu audio, which actually isnt a problem but we wont go into that.

Seriously all my hardware is from 2003 and I need to install 0 drivers, well my usb wifi is from 2007.

its funny to see this thread right after I installed ubuntu for the first time. yesterday i got a virus on windows xp that was impossible to remove (it automatically closed any program and once i restarted the computer, no more anything)

so i downloaded ubuntu onto a cd and got my computer running within 15 minutes. the only problem is my poker program won't start with wine, which might be a deal killer for me.
