Why is medical marijuana so expensive?

Prices are high because retailers are buying weed at street prices and then adding profit to that.

We get approximately $4,000 per lb. here wholesale, which is pretty much the same old price we've seen for years... 350 per oz, etc. Dispensaries buy it for 4 grand and then must charge 15 to 20 per gram to make any profit.

But our street prices are still 50 an eighth so a person can buy an oz. for 350, and sell it for 400 and make 50 bucks worth of free weed.

Any dispensary that grows their own weed and still charges these outrageous prices should be shut down. But there is no way they can grow enough... so they are forced to buy our extra meds... so far.

Street business has increased thousands of percents since medical marihoochie came around so it really doesn't matter to growers whether or not these retailers make it or fail.

As long as the wholesale price holds steady, we will see high dispensary prices. That is the nature of capitalism... which doesn't work anyway so don't hold your breath.

Socialism works. We should all get free weed from the govt. to make up for the years of suffering and torture they put us through.

That's a good point. The problem is that's at the heart of the american capitalistic health care system and we have seen how it doesn't work.

We should look to the socialists countries that make it work and model it after them because they are obviously doing it better.

Our model is a bad premise so why continue it?

Did I mention it's also completely disgusting, immoral and vulgar to charge someone who is in health need (thru no fault of their own) more then someone who has the option of taking it or leaving it.

Typically american to stick with what doesn't work instead of adopting what does work.

I done heroin for 18 years...(Been off it since '95)...but I never once done a slam and said, "Shit man..I want to go steal something!!"--
I did it, and had no choice but to go steal something...to support my habit--
Heroin is very cheap to produce...the mark up is pure Black Market--

Lots of good points have been made here for both sides. JJ, I respect you and usually agree with you, but you are only looking at part of the cost picture. I am cheap as any farmer, and it costs me over a grand a pound to produce if I include all my costs. I can add it up other ways, but that is real costs, rent ain't free.

I also agree with making charity a policy of any operation, can't buy karma.

I vote for higher prices, 10K sounds about right to me, but I will not adopt that price, the market will set it.

This bill passes and we're going to drop to waaay below 23rd in the world. This bill is NOT like the programs in other countries and don't let them fool you into thinking it is. This bill will pour money into the insurance companies, piss off the medical industry and royally infuriate your average civilian. It's a bad patch on a huge problem that needs to be fixed another way.

Legalize cannabis, get people off 80% of the Rx pills they're on and get this nation back to being healthy. We're emptying our pockets into the pharmaceutical and chemical companies and they're bankrupting us and destroying our health. (Haven't you noticed the explosion in health 'Issues' over the last 70 years?)

Take the power BACK from the Feds, get them OUT of your body and OFF your property. Things will start getting better.

My cost are just like JJ and I can do 2lbs for 400 easy. Rent/Mortgage would need to be paid regardless of growing. Maintenance don't have any included in start up costs(spares of all equipment) I have mother plants. Growing for me is medicine that I love to grow so my time free of charge.So my cost's are.

1.Growing Medium(Reused for years)
2.water
3.Nutrients
4.Electricity

Ranked 23rd by a biased ranking system. Premature babies that would be declared still born at birth in the 'better' countries would be issued a birth certificate and put into the neonatal ICU. Throw out deaths by gun violence and auto wrecks which really have nothing to do with health care and the US suddenly is #1 in life expectancy. Both things kill our ranking. I wonder if those preemies that were saved and alive think that our health care system is worse than the system that would have labeled them still born and sent them to the landfill? Are doctors in other countries magicians that can save a man who's head was blow apart by a gunshot? Gosh, the UN is such an honest arbiter of reality...just look at their global drugs policy!

I recall watching an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street where Robin Williams was playing the husband of a murder victim. When he was at the station the primary detective was goofing, laughing, and talking about how fat his paycheck would be because of his wife's case, which enraged him. He went to Giordello and demanded the detective's removal. G replied, I'm not taking him off the case. He's the best detective I have. You don't need him to grieve the death of your wife, you need him to solve the case. Likewise I don't need my medical cannabis provider to give a shit about me. I just need him to provide my medical cannabis.
