Hm, based on what I've read on this thread I'd suggest the following:
1. Go to a home improvement store and pick up a cheap saw, ten 2x4x8s, and five cinder blocks, stack them up somewhere conspicuous with some work gloves and a hammer, and tell everyone you're an independent contractor.
2. Hit the nearest Hot Topic and get some PVC pants and mesh shirts and tell them you're a professional goth.
3. Cut off your left pinkie and say you're on workman's comp.
4. For that matter, just get so stoned you can't talk and tell them you suffered a head injury on the job and are on disability.
5. Grow dreadlocks, buy some sitar music and "Free Tibet" posters and tell them you just graduated from CU Boulder and are spending some time finding yourself. They'll just assume a trust fund is involved.

I have a specialized job in construction and I hardly ever work in town. My job will take me out of town most of the time for as few as a couple of days a week to months or years at a time if wanted to. I will usually only work for a total of 6 months a year spread out through out the year and still I make 50 to 70K a year. There for my neighbors never know if I'm home or out of town working.
