Yeah the first scenario is tax evasion. The second ballpark is a bit different if you haven't filed and THEIR records show you owe them money and in that case the penalties/fines will just keep getting bigger except...
Would agree with that so if no tangible assets then there's nothing they can SEE so anything they get from you is gravy.
I didn't file for a few years and they caught me when I had a year where I traded stocks but even though I did not owe taxes on income and the market trades were a net loss I still 'needed' to file, so did, and they ended up owing me a few $...but they missed the $ I ran through a friend's offshore trust a few years earlier cause they had no record of it. They didn't ask, I didn't tell and since the statute of limitations has expired...
. I didn't need to file again 1 year, they sent me a letter asking for my return, I had no trades to record and just ignored it and 10 years 'clean' since filing returns and giving Caesar his due. As for the IRS tax conspiracy or whatever thing...don't even go there...
You still pay what you "owe" as far as taxes, the only part that they can reduce to pennies on the dollar is the penalties/interest. One thing that may work in your favor is if the withholdings were enough to cover your taxes then it shouldn't be too bad on you. The down side to that though is if the government owes you money you only got 3 years before the statue of limitations runs out. Which is a pisser, you only get 3 years to catch the government on their mistakes but they can go back as far as they want if they feel you made a mistake. That 7 year/10 year thing, I think people are getting mixed up with how long a bankruptcy will screw your credit.
Ultimately though, just go ahead and get it done with them, chances are more in favor of you getting caught then the are that you'll get away with it. Especially in the current econmic environment where the government is so in debt and needs every dollar they can get their hands on. Plus the longer you wait the more penalties and interest they can pile on top.

i usually got back $2-3000 a year, so you may want to do them, you will get all those years of back owed money

They caught up with me in about 2 years when I traded and didn't file. I'm more inclined to believe you are clean with them in that if you've been an employee I would think they'd be on your ass very fast since you're in the system.

Same story for me, although I got even more back. It's worth it to do your taxes if they owe YOU. And trust me, if you owed THEM, they'd be on your ass, bro. Good luck and stay safe.

On a lighter note my dad didn't pay any taxes for 16 years, never contacted once. He passed away a couple months ago, so he will never have to pay that shit. The only thing that made me smile when he passed at 53 years old.
