Julian Assange Praises 'Hero' Snowden, Rebukes U.S. 'Disgraceful' Treatment
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRx-5MEDK88

Ecuador I think conceded today that Snowden will not be able to leave Moscow without permission to do so and the Russians are already on record as saying they have a right to know what's in those laptops.

I'm sorry but some of this shit is hard to believe.

Vindication for William Binney

by digby

I don't know how closely people are following the ongoing NSA revelations at this point but it seems, not very. We seem to have devolved into a meta discussion of what constitutes journalism (a necessary discussion) and armchair psychoanalysis of the players in the story.

But the fact is that the Guardian is releasing new information every day, much of it really fascinating. This one, discussed over at Business Insider, must be especially satisfying for an earlier "crazy" whistleblower named William Binney:

William Binney — one of the best mathematicians and code breakers in National Security Agency (NSA) history — worked for America's premier covert intelligence gathering organization for 32 years before resigning in late 2001 because he "could not stay after the NSA began purposefully violating the Constitution."

Binney claims that the NSA took one of the programs he built, known as ThinThread, and started using the program and members of his team to spy on virtually every U.S. citizen under the code-name Stellar Wind.

Thanks to NSA whistleblower/leaker Edward Snowden, documents detailing the top-secret surveillance program have now been published for the first time.

And they corroborate what Binney has said for years.

From Glenn Greenwald and Spencer Ackerman of The Guardian:

The collection of email metadata on Americans began in late 2001, under a top-secret NSA program started shortly after 9/11, according to the documents. Known as Stellar Wind, the program initially did not rely on the authority of any court – and initially restricted the NSA from analyzing records of emails between communicants wholly inside the US.

However, the NSA subsequently gained authority to "analyze communications metadata associated with United States persons and persons believed to be in the United States," according to a secret Justice Department memo from 2007 that was obtained by the Guardian.

Apparently nobody in the here and now cares much about all that. But I would guess that Binney does. He's been shouting into the void for over a decade and everyone dismissed him as delusional.

And having it on the record will at least allow for historians of the future to be able to piece together where our great experiment in self-governance and liberty went wrong. It won't help us much but maybe some society in the future will be able to avoid the pitfalls of blindly trusting the powerful to guard their rights for them.

and the tale continues....

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/30/nsa-leaks-us-bugging-european-allies

the NSA is treating even allies of the US like cold war enemies, it's incredible. they are gonna lose so much good will around the world. the opposite of what you need. this whole war on terror seems to be about making new enemies as well as what ever else they think they are achieving. i don't think the US has ever been so low in world opinion as at this time.

even though it's harmful, this stuff needs to come out. as RonPaul said, if we really are gonna do all this spying on everyone all the time, we at least need to do it in the open, legally. at this point it's clear that these programs went well beyond what was intended by the drafter of the patriot act. while he wanted it to be easy to spy on individuals, he didnt intend for it to be used to spy on everyone. there was still supposed to be some suspicion or reason to spy.

i mean we shouldn't forget that they lied about this to congress not 2 weeks before all this stuff started coming out. so if it was really all legal and above board, why did the NSA boss lie to congress when asked about it? they know what they are doing is illegal and they didnt tell congress about the extent of these programs. to then say these are all legal, Congressional overseen projects is another straight up lie.

wasn't Nixon impeached for bugging 50 phone lines? what should be done to the guy who was in charge of bugging everyone? people say times change, it will be interesting to see just how much the times have actually changed with regard to this. will it be 100 taps are ok, or 1000? or maybe a million taps allowed at their discretion? but will we allow everyone to be bugged now and not even do anything about it? have the times changed that much? time will tell....

poor Snowden. he can't have planned to spend so long in russian transit space...

it gets better and better. i just read on RT news There have also been calls from French and German politicians for their governments to grant asylum to Edward Snowden. in light of these new revelations about eu officials being spied on as well as national government negotiators and ministers.

http://rt.com/news/germany-summons-us-ambassador-leaks-476/

man this makes me wonder what will be next, at least his revelations seem to be well planned out. he's adding more pieces of the puzzle bit by bit. even if his escape plan was a mess.

They are all hypocrites..

Before christianity took ahold of our proud north we had ELECTED kings, and if the elected king misused his powers he was thrown out in the gutter. But then christ came to the north and gave kings "allmighty power" in exchange for mutual agreements.. wich most us of know that is aslong kings stay out of religion and never turn against the priests they will praise him and the people in churches will continue to obey their "allmighty king", ugh... their all the same, leeches for profit.

I'm not saying profit is a bad thing, but theres a line within profit and that is fair profit and straight greed.

But back to church and kings, i think we can see the same pattern with Politicians and the Media today

"lower and lower, harder and harder floors" - 12 step program

the story that keeps on giving:

Insider Threats: Secret Obama Program Targets Whistle-blowers as Enemies of the State!
The latest in a wave of scandals for the Obama administration has broken as investigative reporters for McClatchy have uncovered The Insider Threat Program, a secret anti-whistleblower initiative created by the Obama administration.
The program specifically targets whistle-blowers wishing to expose corruption and illegal practices by government agencies, equates media leaks with espionage, and like a page out of George Orwell’s 1984, mandates that government employees spy and snitch on each other or risk being criminally charged!

thinking Putin has the answers or is somehow above all this would be a mistake. i'm sure they do their own shady shit over there. the only thing i like about Putin is his value as a counterweight to the US. without them and China we'd all be ruled openly by the US by now, lol. the other thing i do respect about him is his willingness to spend hours answering questions from average folks on a regular basis. also the fact that he has been against new wars where ever in the past years. the guy seems highly intelligent to me and is probably a deadly enemy to have, even if he is on the right side of history recently.

Yeah I have to say that I do love RT as a news channel, Russia itself however is a whole different story... Putin is a bit more honest (including about being an asshole) but that doesn't stop the country being a human rights nightmare :p

I think Iceland and the Scandinavian countries are on the right track if any are.

offtopic: well thought reflection, i feel alot the same. former KGB, one of the richest singular persons in the world. withdraw all his cash in cyprus banks when they wanted to tax em' and boom, collapse lol.

ontopic: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/01/putin-snowden-remain-russia-offer

In a move likely to enrage the US, Putin said on Monday: "If he wants to go somewhere and someone will take him, go ahead. If he wants to stay here, there is one condition – he must stop his work aimed at bringing harm to our American partners, as strange as that sounds coming from my mouth."

We have the same shit here in Scandinavian countries, aint no different. Sadly. The one thing Sweden have is though, a piracy party in the European Parliement - Representing freedom of speech, right to internet privacy questions etc.
I think Norway have one too, not sure if they are represented in EU tho.

But still - same shit basically.

Yeah I've gotten that impression from Falkvinge's blog, it's more that (again just from impression here) people seem more comfortable with the weird mix of capitalism meets socialism. I'd be pretty comfortable with the high tax rates knowing that there's a well funded health system and infrastructure. And yeah like you say, parties like the Pirate Party are actually taken a bit more seriously :woohoo:

edit: Sorry very off topic :p
