Hello from Thailand and a long time devotee of cannabis.

I grew up in Southern Africa smoking dagga and Transkei, Durban Poison, Swazi, Rooibard, the lovely Malawi cob, or hashish. Now settled in Thailand, about 2 hours outside of Bangkok, on a small piece of land in the rolling mountains, exploring a Permaculture-inspired lifestyle and following the King of Thailand's ideas on sustainability and self-sufficiency.

I'm experimenting with indoor and outdoor growing, making lots of mistakes (the only way to learn, apparently). At the moment I'm interested in soil and organic techniques and growing landrace sativas in an indoor/outdoor combination. In the longer term, I'd like to work with other growers to preserve and develop local Southeast Asian strains and explore crossing African and Asian strains. I'm keen to interact with local growers and visitors to Thailand so that we can share information and resources, seeds and cuttings, and provide news and encouragement.

Here is a good overview of the historical and legal situation in Thailand (4 pages): History of Cannabis Use and Anti-Marijuana Laws in Thailand by Eric Blair.

In Thailand, "kanchong" refers to hemp for fiber ("fiber type") and "kancha" refers to the "drug type" of cannabis. The Thai government recognizes the possibility for legitimate cultivation of kanchong and has even issued Edicts on high quality hemp paper. (e.g. th.ps.1108.2548 and ps.1111.2548)

At the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden, Chiang Mai , they have the “Kanchong Project” (also see the Newsletter page 23). Launched under Her Majesty’s initiatives with the aim to find suitable cultivation techniques for local people in northern Thailand to produce hemp for fiber and seeds.

A classic: Survey of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) use by the Hmong (Miao) of the China/Vietnam border region by Robert C. Clarke and Wenfeng Gu.

For growers, the following two resources have lots of useful information about growing under local conditions:

Welcome! The 4 page legal history of Thailand was interesting. Makes me wonder if Americans can visit Thailand if they have had a previous felony in the U.S.

I'm curious to read some of the stuff you've posted..being and old school guy...lovee thai stick when I was growing up and miss it....If I wasn't and old guy I'd have even more fond memories of it.Enjoy and grow safe.

I wonder if I can tap into your knowledge and experience with a question about the best lighting for flowering sativas?

I have 6 lovely Swazi ladies that are 3 to 4 weeks into flowering, with another 4 to 5 weeks to go. At this stage I can see that the buds on the indoor plants are not as large as those on the plants enjoying the sun. The indoor plants are under dozens of CFLs but it is obviously not enough light. Making daily adjustments to the lights is becoming tedious and I need to scale up to the next step. I have learnt that adding up lumens is the wrong way to go and CFLs just do not have the intensity and penetration of HID.

However, I'm not sure how to proceed.

I've read a few times that pure sativas do not like HPS for flowering as the light is too red. Supporting this idea, I've also read that MH is perfect for flowering sativas. However, there are apparently "veg" and "flower" type metal halides.

Which lights are better for flowering, HPS or MH? Which brands are recommended? Any ideas about a good reflector/hood? Where would I find these items in Thailand, and what are the approximate costs?

Anything else I need to know about lighting for sativas?

Did eat Thai food at Bird in Amsterdam yesterday btw.One of the best, recommended by the Thai itself.

Currently cannabis is divided into drug type, intermediate type and fiber type. I am sure that eventually the Government will recognize "medical" type. It is a slow process and activist Don Land of Thailand Cannabis Corporation has done a tremendous amount of work.

Thailand and it's people have a strong connection to cannabis but the government has made a concerted effort over the last 20 years to destroy this. I've found that Thai people are very tolerant of cannabis and appreciate it's multiple uses.

I've thought about how I could best contribute to restore this connection and my solution is to eventually grow my own medical-grade cannabis, while also preserving and promoting SE Asian and "Thai" strains. I'm convinced that I can change attitudes faster by leading by example. Since the idea of medical grade cannabis is foreign to most locals, I aim to grow some Thaitanium-grade buds to expose them to fragrant, organically grown, beautifully dried, cured and presented cannabis. With a little effort, we can develop strains (e.g. quick flowering) that Thai people can be proud of, especially strains with different medical properties (THC:CBD:CBN ratios). In the future, I'd be happy running a low-key cannabis research center, preserving, testing and developing strains for local growers, medical centers and health resorts.

I'm pleased that someone voted an earlier post as helpful, thank you very much. :thank you:

Maybe beginner's luck, but I wanted to mention a technique that's working well for me: hanging weights on branches, and supercropping, followed by a hanging weight.

My half-baked theory is that you should try get the atypical top below the level of most of the other buds and keep it there for a few days. Soon after triggering the flowering response, I supercropped and then hang a small weight on the supercropped main stem to keep it bent over, below the other branches. This tempted the side branches to compete to be topdog, the new atypical bud. After a few days, I removed the weight from the bent stem. From this stage onwards the plant had a handful of branches at around the same height as the main stem, each thinking "Now I'm the leader".

After some more growth, I hung small weights on various branches to flatten out the shape even more, keep the wannabe topdogs in their place. One or two days of carrying the weight and when I removed the weights, the branches should stay more-or-less horizontal.

Now it's flowering time and she has a wine-glass shape.

I'll try this technique again in the future.

Thai and Cambodian sativas are pretty similar (same same but different as they say in Thailand).

Had the pleasure of smoking some really excellent compressed Thai sativa in Southern Thailand a few years ago. It was compressed, but still moist, and absolutely knocked my socks off for my 1000 Baht. Thai weed always gets my mind racing and thinking deeply about random stuff. I feel a little body high too, but it does insane things to my brain that leave me speechless! Good Kali Mist is exactly the same kind of high.

don't know why, but here in Holland most weed sold as " Thai " is generally not that good.
and also is the cheapest one around.

been years since i smoked it, maybe i should pick up some.. perhaps its gotten better
