don't know why, but here in Holland most weed sold as " Thai " is generally not that good.
and also is the cheapest one around.

Depends where you buy it.You can still find very good Thai in some shops :blowbubbles:

Keep on growing :)

Thanks for the links shokdee. I hope you succeed in your venture.
You must feel like you're in heaven with Thai herb and all that good food in Kanchanaburi. Living the life in Paradise.
Are you taking visitors?

hehe, perhaps i should try some then, tho the only shop i know that's near me, i wouldn't even go buy the haze there..

way over priced, and never a steady supply or quality

i generally drive to Amsterdam for my buds, a 30 euro baggy of my local stuff, is generally bad quality

id spend about 10 on fuel to drive to Amsterdam and back, the same amount will cost 20 bucks there, and be good quality, and a steady strength

i wish growing it myself inside under lights would be less illegal :p

work on organic farm

Howzit RandyCalifornia, Daylighting, SdeesToir710, all the lurkers, and doli!

Thanks to everyone for the many positive vibes :thank you:

My parts, the only smoke readily available is compressed Lao brick. Sometimes I hear talk of "pure Thai" strains, but if you listen closely, it's really Lao. Maybe "Thai and Cambodian sativas are pretty similar", I do not know. What about Vietnam, or Burma. Burma is listed as a major hashish exporter!!

Say Randy, have you heard of WOOFing? See www.wwoof.org "Organization assisting those who would like to work as volunteers on organic farms internationally". You go and live with a local organic grower, work the land. In my case, move grow lights, take clones, shuffle pots. Just an idea. PM me.

Overhead in a Phnom Penh pizzaria.

Waitress: Hello, what would you like to order?
Customer: Uhm, the Spicy Chicken pizza .... Deluxe .... With marijuana. .... Large.
Waitress: That's one large, Spicy-Deluxe pizza, with marijuana topping.
Customer: Sorry, I mean a Spicy Chicken pizza, with a large side-order of the deluxe marijuana.
Waitress: Anything else with that? Some coke? ice?
Customer: Only a Budweizer, thanks.
Waitress: OK, deluxe marijuna with big bud.
Customer: Don't forget my spicy chicken pizza!

Enjoy your smoke

PS. Rain! Drizzling! How much rain is allowed on flowering sativas, 3-4 week from finishing? Or move them indoors, pronto!

Lovely rain! Nature's blessings! Answering the call of Nature is always more fun then answering the call on your cellphone.

Hiya Andyo. I'm gardening at 12N on 7 rai, but lived on Samui for many years too. I'm a white belt, just testing if there is an outdoor grow season in Thailand, starting in January and finishing before the rains (May/June). Looking good so far, almost done.

Also, does anyone have thoughts about what works for drying, curing and preserving cannabis in the tropics?

Thanks, Shokdee

Wow, that sounds good, I have been working in horticulture all my life. Would be a good fit, but I'm all worn out and old unfortunately for me. I can barely grow my own herb. haha. I hope to visit Thailand one day, when I find out where they are keeping all the Thai Sticks that I did not finish from the 70's.
Enjoy all that good Thai food and herb and be Irie, you're in one of the sweet spots on this earth for pleasure.

This is an interesting thread.

I have smoked really good Thai in my life, but sadly it has been a very long time. Some rumors are that the Thai I speak of is gone.

Good luck finding peace in Thailand. That is what it is really all about. I moved to the USA in the mid 90s and although I do not have to fear for my life anymore I am not exactly comfortable. It is what it is.

Hello OLDproLg and huligun.

Randy, you sound happy and young at heart. I have the heart of a young child, my surgeon assures me.

What are the Thai breeds/strains that people remember, like to grow, or want to preserve? Are there "strains" - Meo, Hmong, Nakorn, Udon, Samui, Tao, Chang, Kut, and so on?

What do you enjoy reading from newbies? What would people like to see me post on the main forum?

It's me again, Shokdee.

I've posted some test images in the gallery.

Stay tuned for the BUD PORN.

This forum is HUGE, how can I help? What do you need most - grow reports, photo journals?

Thanks!

Hello from Thailand and a long time devotee of cannabis.

I grew up in Southern Africa smoking dagga and Transkei, Swazi, Rooibard, the lovely Malawi cob, or hashish. Now settled in Thailand, about 2 hours outside of Bangkok, on a small piece of land in the rolling mountains, exploring a Permaculture-inspired lifestyle and following the King of Thailand's ideas on sustainability and self-sufficiency.

I'm experimenting with indoor and outdoor growing, making lots of mistakes (the only way to learn, apparently). At the moment I'm interested in soil and organic techniques and growing landrace sativas in an indoor/outdoor combination. In the longer term, I'd like to work with other growers to preserve and develop local Southeast Asian strains and explore crossing African and Asian strains. I'm keen to interact with local growers and visitors to Thailand so that we can share information and resources, seeds and cuttings, and provide news and encouragement.

Look forward to learning from you all.

---- Some more information about Thailand: -------

Here is a good overview of the historical and legal situation in Thailand (4 pages): History of Cannabis Use and Anti-Marijuana Laws in Thailand by Eric Blair.

In Thailand, "kanchong" refers to hemp for fiber ("fiber type") and "kancha" refers to the "drug type" of cannabis. The Thai government recognizes the possibility for legitimate cultivation of kanchong and has even issued Edicts on high quality hemp paper. (e.g. th.ps.1108.2548 and ps.1111.2548)

At the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden, Chiang Mai , they have the “Kanchong Project” (also see the Newsletter page 23). Launched under Her Majesty’s initiatives with the aim to find suitable cultivation techniques for local people in northern Thailand to produce hemp for fiber and seeds.

A classic: Survey of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) use by the Hmong (Miao) of the China/Vietnam border region by Robert C. Clarke and Wenfeng Gu.

For growers, the following two resources have lots of useful information about growing under local conditions:
> Phenological Characteristics and Fiber Properties of Thai Hemp by Thitivara Sengloung. (Thesis, Doctor of Philosophy (Botany), Kasetsart University.)
> Effect of Sowing Date on Growth and Development of Thai Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.), by Thitivara Sengloung, Lily Kaveeta and Weerachai Nanakorn.(Kasetsart J. (Nat. Sci.) 43 : 423 - 431 (2009))

Be sure to also see "Cannabinoids Content in Cannabis" by Surapol Natakankitkul, et al. It is in Thai but has lovely photos. The english summary was published as "Factors Affecting Cannabinoids Content for Classification of Cannabis Plants in the North of Thailand" by Surapol Natakankitkul, Prapatsorn Tipparat, Pipop Chamnivikaipong, Sirot Chutiwat, Maitree Suttajit.

See also: Characteristics of cannabinoids composition of Cannabis plants grown in Northern Thailand and its forensic application. by Tipparat P, Natakankitkul S, Chamnivikaipong P, Chutiwat S.

Enjoy your smoke.

welcome to ICMAG forums. Also in the region myself. Have looked the TCC site and sent an email enquiring about tours but no response as yet.

I've grown pure sativas a little further north than you (but still tropical). I think if you plant Thai sativa strains now, they will be done in Jan/Feb. As for drying, take your time; those airy sativa buds can hold more moisture than one would think, and the humidity in the air slows drying down.

Which lights are better for flowering, HPS or MH? Which brands are recommended? Any ideas about a good reflector/hood? Where would I find these items in Thailand, and what are the approximate costs?

Anything else I need to know about lighting for sativas?

Many thanks.
Shokdee

As you rightly point out having the right amount of light. Not too much either. I recently grew a local plant which ended up being male but I did notice it liked a certain amount of light. I grew with CFL's and actually had to remove a couple of the bigger ones as the plant was suffering a little from too much light.

That is indoors with CFL's.

On the subject of finding decent HPS/MH lighting in Thailand. Good luck with that. I've seen MH lighting but the ballast is attached which will lead to heat issues which as I'm sure you are already aware are a major issue in this region for indoor growing at least.

MH in Thailand

Andyo posted a fabo link earlier in case anyone missed it: seasunaquarium. Maybe Andyo can pop in and say a little more: Do they have a well-stocked, physical shop? Is ordering online better? What kind of service do they offer, delivery, and so on. Would be helpful, thanks.

oh, the suffering

oh, the suffering

UPDATE: The plants are OK now, so just skip this.

...suffering a little from too much light.

That is indoors with CFL's.

Will come back to this point, but for now, can you please look at my plants, when you have a moment? What's going on? Is it overwatering!

Thanks, shokdee
