Scratch and sniff cards - Police initiative to uncover growers

Crimestoppers is distributing 'scratch and sniff' cannabis cards across the UK in a bid to help residents identify and report marijuana farms in their area.

The cards will be sent via post and come with a list of 'signs to look out', as well as a paper panel which releases a strong odour of cannabis when scratched.

The move comes as Crimestoppers launches a nationwide campaign to target cannabis farms. A key part of the campaign is to dispel the myth that farms only exist in remote or industrial locations, and to raise awareness of growers in more populated settings.

The main idea behind the so-called 'scratch and sniff' cards is to help residents unfamiliar with the smell of marijuana to be able to identify it, and to encourage them to inform the police if they subsequently believe a cannabis farm may be active nearby.

The scheme will be piloted in 13 areas of the UK where marijuana production has traditionally been highest: Avon & Somerset, Greater Manchester, Hertfordshire, Humberside, Kent, London, Merseyside, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Suffolk, West Midlands and West Yorkshire.



I think this reinforces the assertion that the Police need informers most times to find grows.

I know of someone who got two year because they put a bit in local paper giving tips on how to spot a grow house.. I.e late night visits black bin bags etc.

Couldnt agree more. The UK seems more and more under the thumb, every time I visit the people seem more quiescent and another freedom taken away. Theyve effectively handed the country over to a few rich bankers. Tony Blair turned the country into a PC police state.

Enterpriseing hydro shop owners will be stocking up on filters ect , might scare a few when it lands on their doormat.

Could smell a mates grow from halfway down his drive recently , he swore their was no odour at all , you can get so used to it over time or coke.

He then added too much ozone which smells stronger than the weed and less easily explained.

Will track down one of these as am interested to see how it compares to my current fruity oil refinery stench.

Predict many false alarms for roadkill , dodgy drains and ethnic cooking , wont last long.
