You have a great point. I wonder sometimes, when I see the actions of the DEA, if they are just following their charter or are marching on orders from the commander in chief.
I had a police contact today. I was smoking outdoors on my townhouse deck and an older lady, must have been 60 comes knocking on my fence.
"Just because marijuana is legal does not mean you can smoke it in public" She says
My fence is about 6 feet tall so I stand on my toes and look down and there was this lady, shrunken from age and all wrinkly. She looked like she needed a hit if you ask me.
I said, "This is not public, this is my back yard."
I had some friends over and they said a few other things that are not so respectful of a lady that freaking old.
I told her to mind her own business and continued smoking.
A couple hours later there was a seriously hard knock on my door. I opened it up to see the Seattle Police! For a second I was startled, but it passed once I got my perspective in order.
"We have a report that you and your friends were smoking marijuana in public, is that true?
"Of course not officer, that would be illegal."
"We have another report that you used profanity to this lady"
I said that is true, is that against the law?
"Well, if it is threatening it is", he said, "And where were you smoking marijuana, I can smell it now."
I was smoking on my deck". I said

it's one of the few places to get arrested federally for simple possession!
We went to reggae fest one year, oil city, just outside misland mi, was the location I believe.
We got stopped by state troopers with weed and mushroom crumbs, lol, of course I was the only guy in the car with a record, so he was trying to get me to snitch.
Little did I know(or the cop for that matter) I was committing a federal offense.

Lucky for you. Did you know that those drugs are illegal to even have on your person? I have it on good authority that some pot smokers have started to frequent this site, so be careful! Keep a sharp eye out for those shady characters and stay on the straight and narrow! Also, if you accidentally find yourself with some of those shrooms, send them on to me and I will turn them over to the proper authorities for you and keep your name out of it. Won't that be just swell?

The Seattle Police Department is not about to issue bongs to new recruits along with a badge and gun.
But it is easing off restrictions on past marijuana use of those who apply to become cops.
The department had disqualified candidates if they had smoked marijuana within three years of applying. This week, the department changed that to one year.
Initiative 502, which voters approved in November, has promped the change. The initiative, which went into effect Dec. 6, legalizes possession of up to an ounce of marijuana.
The department announced the policy change Tuesday. Police Chief John Diaz asked for a review of hiring in light of the new pot law. And that resulted in Tuesday's announcement.
The department will continue to re-evaluate other marijuana-related hiring practices in the next year, it said.
"We are deciding to take a much more worldly view of our applicants," Assistant Chief Jim Pugel said in a statement.
"In light of the changing cultural and political landscape, the three-year rule does not make sense," Assistant Chief Dick Reed said in the statement. Reed oversees police hiring. "We're trying to find a middle ground that doesn't exclude viable candidates."
The pot question doesn't come up often. Police say fewer than 5 percent of the 500 people who applied in November to be officers were disqualified over marijuana use.

Are their any 'speak easy' places set up yet? Im going to be visiting Seattle over new years and would love to poke my head in and take a toke as I dont think ill be bringing any sensi up from norcal.
There is a place in Olympia called, "Frankies Sport Bar" that has a smoking room. For him to operate he had to make it a private club and charge $10 per year. If he doesn't get shut down I would imagine more of these kinds of things popping up. Especially in Seattle proper.

I grew up around Seattle, and I've been smoking pot for the last 15 or so years, so I'll share my feelings on all this..
I really feel like the changes we're undergoing are so slow that it's creeping up on us all. Right before the election I found myself wandering from lake Washington to Belltown, and it seemed like I couldn't walk a block without smelling that familiar fragrance. I ride around the metro area daily on my bicycle, and I smell weed smoke on EVERY SINGLE RIDE. Nicer areas like Mukilteo, Redmond, Issaquah... slummier parts of town like north Everett, White Center, doesn't matter; weed smoke. And this was all BEFORE the legalization vote.
I can't really say that things have changed much. There hasn't been a perceptible increase in smoking, I haven't noticed more people smoking joints on the sidewalk or hitting bowls at red lights, and I myself haven't really changed my practices. I still smoke discreetly while I'm wandering the interurban trail, puff on my porch in the morning, etc..
This is not, however, how it has always been for me. I started smoking when I was a teenager and, understandably, my availability wasn't quite what it is now. If I were walking through a neighborhood to a friend's house, and I smelled herb in the air, you can bet I would pick up on that in a second, and maybe even tried to figure out right where it was coming from. I would have been flipping out if portions of the city smelled like weed pretty much 24/7.
I guess in summary: over the past 15 years, massive change... over the past 5, barely any noticeable change at all. And really, that's both what I expected to happen, and my best hope.

Your story reminds me of when I stayed at a resort in Hawaii that charged $500 a night (unless you got some kind of deal, which I always did). In that resort I always always smelled weed when I was walking from my room to the gondola. It was such a fun place and such a festive atmosphere. Everyone that was there was there to have fun and the fun was enhanced with weed. I want to get out there in a couple of weeks, once he shopping season is officially over. I should be looking for a deal now, because I am not spending that much!
I am familiar with the areas you speak of, but never really smell weed. Funny how two different people in the same area can have completely different experiences. I never smell weed here in public unless I am at some smoking event. At midnight on the 6th there was a big public smoke-out at the space needle for instance. Maybe once summer comes I will get more exposure. It is so cold and wet up here this time of year I cannot imagine doing much outside to have fun. I don't live too far from White Center, by the way, but I am not in the hood. I am actually in the nice part of town, rather upscale. You probably know where I am at. A very popular place in the warmer months.
Whats a good area to try and find some kind? I figure since its legal it wont hurt for me to ask at some local head shops?

FUNNY U would say, that....I dropped into a local head shop yesterday to pick up sum papers....
and watched 3 different "old folks"... hanging around the shop and parking lot .... checking there cell phones and looking over there shoulders....IE: waiting for the "guy" to bring BACK there purchase...
the stupid part was all 3 had out of state plates and stood out like a 2 dollar bill......one from far away as Louisiana....
talk about glow~in~the~dark...
