selfing is only one form of creating feminized seed, and it can be done well, and it can be done poorly, and it also can yield varying results, ie. great variation in your progeny with respect to vigor etc. this IS inbreeding at its most prominent form as you've taken the genome of the mother and recombined it within itself to create the progeny, no outside genes have been added (whether from brother/mother/sister/father etc or non-relative). i'm about to test some of reservoir's beta SSSDH S1 beans and will let you know how they turn out, i have high hopes for them, but will see what happens.

anyway, as i said selfing is only ONE way to produce feminized seed. you can also create feminized seed by the same process of inducing the intersex (monoecious) trait in multiple female plants and can then CROSS POLLINATE these plants (use each other's pollen on one another, instead of one themselves). this process can be done with plants that are sisters, or plants that aren't related at all... it is exactly the same process as if you've used a brother and sister to mate to produce progeny, or a male and female of two completely different strains. the degree of inbreeding and monoecy ("hermie") traits in the progeny will reflect the quality of the genetics (male or female) selected for by the breeder, not the process itself. cross pollinating two females is exactly the same as cross pollinating a male and a female, with respect to the genetic health of progeny created. for me... in future projects where i'll stuff around with creating fem seeds most if not all will be done with CROSS POLLINATION not SELFING, because yes this is more likely to create progeny with issues, THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT ALL PROGENY WILL = SHIT VIGOR, but admittedly there's an increased % that may. you would want to select the best of the offspring, whether that is 99/100 or 1/100 that are amazing plants and then use them for whatever other breeding. but i can imagine people using this if they're trying to conserve a specific trait, say for some reason you know that the mother has one recessive allele (Bb) for blue pistils (hypothetically) and you've never seen this elsewhere and only have her to use, the quickest way to get a pure breeding plant for this trait's alleles (bb) is to self the plant. this will produce offspring with BB, Bb and bb in 25%/50%/25% proportions. then you have bred true for this trait and can use it further where you desire, however you desire. but if you didn't self, you'd have to do multiple generations of Fs and/or backcrosses before you would be able to get the bb, because you'd have to create 2 progeny with Bb and then cross them or backcross them with other Bb to get further offspring with bb. anyway sorry for the essay but that's just one explanation of how selfing has a use. but feminized seed specifically are best made from 2 or more separate females through cross pollination IMO this will = the same as using males in F1 genetic health wise.
