i dont know what im going to do. tomorrow im gonna go back to target and see if i can trade out the rubbermaid cab for a wooden one. maybe go bigger so i can use a 150w comfortably. setting up a grow cab is fucking confusing when you dont know what kind of heat to expect

i think its more confusing wondering where to place stuff, where to make holes e.t.c

for a 150w in a cooltube, a 120mm pc fan should be enough. or just use a typical inline fan pulling through the cooltube with a carbon filter, you can lower the speed of the fan to about its lowest.
if you dont want a cooltube(they are fucking good!) then just have good airflow around the cab/bulb as hps bulbs radiate heat and lots of it.

ps, i wouldnt trust hps in a plastic rubbermaid, im sure a bulb can easily melt it should it touch, it would BURN the fuck out of you if you held the bulb and hell even the socket gets stupidly hot.

I vote for a cool tube! you may lose a little light, but the temp reduction is worth it. when i started my cab i called a few local contractors and had them leave some cabinets to the side for me. i got some nice cabinets out of the deal for free, unless you count a $20 tip. some days i love how wasteful rich people can be.

Hi fellow 70 watters, I was wondering: When do you switch out your bulbs? When they break, after a certain amount of time, after seeing some visual clue...?

For me, it's been rather random so far - I've simply switched bulbs every few grows. I'd like to do it in a more systematic way from now on.

you're good for upto 15,000hrs (1 year of 24/0 = 8,000hrs). after that the bulb will struggle to fire @20-24,000hrs.
and i have run one untill 24,000, it grew okay, just struggled to ignite.

some people on here say change hps every couple of grows as they loose yeild. i never saw a loss, in fact its last grow, grew an awesome plant :D

i doubt its noticeable if any light is lost. you will notice the temp reduction for sure!!

is there a way i can set up a cooltube to work with a pc fan? and how should i hang the light in there? like vertical from the top, or sticking out from one the the sides? i plan on having the light fixed to the top near the exhaust and just raisin plants with a shelf. and with adequate exhaust how many degrees over ambient in your box?

yes you can buy an adapater plate, like so http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WALL-PLATE-WI...arden_Hearing_Cooling_Air?hash=item5ace978e86 which you can attach to a 120mm fan. cooltube can be bought from ebay too, for about £30.
i would have the bulb horizontal and either going front to back or side to side, see which way you can get it to fit/work best.
i cannot guess what your temps will be, but if you use a decent fan and have a good amount of fresh air coming into the cab, you can lower its speed to make it quieter and im sure you will be totally fine.

I would check out a muffin fan (using the adapter above) or inline fan. computer fan's don't seem to last long or push enough air for me. muffin fans also run 110v so you can use a dimmer switch as a speed controller if needed.

ive got an inline fan, problem is the noise and you need a speed controller to slow it right down, and then u have a buzzing noise from the controller. a pc fan is quieter.
imo a quality pc fan should last a good few years. ive had cheapo ones last a year or 2, so even they are not so bad.

Anyone ever think about running a dual 70w flip flop grow box? I am talking about picking up an extra bulb and building a relay to use one ballast to run two bulbs opposite of each other on a 12/12 timer. I believe the relay just switches the wires coming off the ballast from one lamp to the other. This way the ballast is already warmed up and at full power when the lamp comes on. It would also be a cheaper way to add an extra grow space.

My idea is to run a three compartment grow box with a 24/0 Cmh veg section in the middle and a 12/12 70w hps section on each side. I have seen articles on building relays for this type of setup on here but I can't remember where.

alternating between 2 bulbs, that cover the same area? or that cover different areas and maybe overlap?
id say not worth doing either. give them their own 1x1 area

The bulbs would each cover their own separate grow areas.

One cab on while the other is off right? Just switching power from
bulb to bulb at a specific time? (keeping the ballast on)
I like the idea and have read about it else ware, but I abandoned it for a bigger build. The wiring was annoying enough for one bulb and one ballast. Also the thought of two boxes in flower at different times just didn't seem like it would fit my schedule.

ok i just ordered a scythe ultra kaze 120mm 2000 rpms( i think its 88cfm at 33dBa). got rid of the rubbermaid cab and got a small wooden on right now that is 23"long by 11"deep by 27"tall. ive got everything but the fan and my light mounted with a reflector. i dunno how i should mount the light in there tho.the cab has shelves so i might just mount light to the top of th box and just mov plants on shelf according to size. when i get a grow or 2 under my belt and i know how my temps are gonna be in the cabinet i might try to do a perpetual in there or something. how do you guys use a passive intake if theres a shelf between the intake at the bottom and exhaust at the top near the light?

i can dig that. also do i need a reflector if the lights mounted at the top and the top of the cab is covered in mylar? i figured the reflector might help heat stay from the exhaust fan. anyone have ideas on how i can hang the light?
