The Galaxy Select A Watt Dimmable 1000 Watt Ballast is one bad ass ballast. Like all dimmable ballasts on the market today you can screw in the 1000 watt lamp and this ballast can operate the lamp at 400 watts, 600 watts, 1000 watts and even "turbo charge mode" that cranks it up to the equivalent of 1100 watts.
Ok now here is where things get fun. Get this - this ballast can fire almost any of the larger grow lamp that exist today. It will light up 400 Watt HPS / MH, 600 watt HPS and 1000 watt HPS / MH lamps. Just set to the desired wattage and install the correct lamp. We have dreamed of the day of one ballast any bulb and its here.
All Galaxy ballasts are known for being compact and cool running that runs nearly silent. Electronic ballasts are known for easier on the lamp thus extending its life.
These ballast come pre-wired with Sun Light Supplys lamp cord receptacle so it will directly plug into the hood of you choice with out wiring. A 6-foot 120 volt power cord included. Consider a Galaxy Select A Watt Dimmable 1000 Watt Ballast for your garden lighting needs.
Specifications:
* Extremely efficient - 99.9%
* Uses 400, 600, and 1000 HPS & MH lamps
* Soft starting
* Extruded aluminum housing
* Lightweight
* Very quiet and limited vibration
* Voltage: 120 or 240
* Warranty: 5 year (3 full, 2 pro-rated)
Manufactures notes:
The Select-a-Watt Galaxy Ballast is different than any other “dimmable” electronic ballast on the market. This state-of-the-art ballast is manufactured to provide today’s serious grower with maximum flexibility & performance. There are three ways to use the Select-a-Watt™ feature:
1) It will properly drive a 400, 600 or 1000 watt lamp to ANSI specifications. For example, set the switch to 400 watts, insert a 400 watt lamp into your socket and the ballast will operate the 400 watt lamp. The ballast will similarly operate 600 or 1000 watt lamps.
2) The second option for this ballast is dimming a 1000 watt lamp. Adjust the switch to 400 or 600 watts and the ballast will dim the 1000 watt lamp by 40 or 60%.
3) The Turbo Charge feature will increase the output of a 1000 watt lamp (only) by approximately 10%. You will achieve peak performance. Please be aware that this may decrease your lamp life.
Lamps are only dimmable on wattages lower than the specified lamp wattage. A 1000 watt lamp can be dimmed down to 600 watt or 400 watt. A 600 watt lamp can be dimmed down to 400 watt.
600 and 400 watt lamps should NEVER be over-driven. Do not operate these lamps with the switch in the 1000 watt or Turbo Charge position. The Turbo Charge setting is designed for 1000 watt lamps only. The results can be hazardous and lead to catastrophic lamp failure.

Wow... looks like I'm buying four of those. I bet we could get a group buy together for a few hundred of em. Ha. The amaaazing ballast, just does everything! I'm assuming it switches 120/240. If not, that would be weak.

It is 120/240 compatible you just have to buy the different power cords. 120 is included. These will most likely be my next ballasts too.

That was one of the reasons I bought the Quantum ballasts, they come with both cords in the box. Well that and I got 1KW ballasts for $264, they put out a measured 10% more light than my analog ballasts with the same hoods/bulbs/distance.

Now I just need to get rid of my hoods and get a bunch of SS2's...

magnums got too big a footprint for you?

Yeah I run em over a 4X4 tray each so footprint didn't matter much, but I hate knowing I am losing 16% of my light due to hood design. Dumb thing to lose light to if it's rectifiable, right? For the record I'm upgrading from the Xtrasun 6"AC hoods, which didn't do so hot in Pico's reflector testing thread. I'll probably get the 8" ones for my new spot.

I was under the impression that the magnums did better than the ss2s?

You could be right, I don't think I read every page and couldn't find a summary report. I did see that the magnums were pretty pricey, how much better than the ss2 were they?

NP man, like I said on your page, he said magnums were better for larger footprints but I would use them regardless, they are very well put together. You can find them on craigslist sometimes but most of the time it is cheaper hoods you find getting hocked.

I was recommending a seller on ebay who sells the XXXLs at $610 for 3 + free shipping, but then he sent some to me that weren't shipped discretely. I came home to find a pallet with 4 XXXL hoods on my door step for everyone to see. No Bueno. I think your best bet is to find a local store that will give you 15-20% off if you buy more than 1.

i think a radiant 6ac gives a better footprint than a super sun II; if u use a spreader the hotspot is gone; a magnum xxl is better yet but heavier than even the radiant 6ac; super sun II are a good even 3x3 footprint, wasn't he just measuring that with 600s or was it 4x4 with 1ks? i forget. ssIIs are very light weight which is nice; especially when compared to the other reflectors. i don't remember the radiant 6s being tested. i got a magnum xxl 6 to go with that new selectable ballast myself.
