Reversed Backcrossing:)

cause he has'nt stabelized the hermi gene. i think hes looking to get fem. seeds to explore the genetic varraitons within the strain.so he can hermie that to pollenate the clone...???? right?????.

GMT you type faster then i smoke:joint:;) example for all. WWxAk<=>AkxWW isit the same? Some people would say the "same", more then none will "no", quietly a few will say "maybe?' ? Now stop what your thinking right now. Some people say "tomato",some say"tomato".:joint:

Forest, the point Charles made in that other thread was that if you have 2 female clones, then it doesn't matter which of the 2 that you reverse. If you are talking about a population, each plant will have a different genome than the next, so it would make a difference not only which line the male came from, but also which male within that line was used (same true of females of course).

i say have at it just dont get all nuts with this tranny insest. and ruin your clone.

Breeding with males and females is soooo 2008. :D

I apologize if this quote was misunderstood. I actually think that the use of sex-reversal hormones by relatively inexperienced breeders for the purpose of line preservation is playing with fire.

That's not to say that I think that STS is always a bad thing, it's just that I prefer to not have reversed individuals in any gene pool that I am working with.

Can't really say Sam is against selfing, he has probably done more selfing of cannabis than anybody. I had to smirk a little when he used an "IBL population of imported seeds" in his example in the linked thread, again, this is the type of population where many deleterious recessives might be sheltered in heterozygotes. He also went 5 generations in his example. He might be the kind of guy that might say something like we better leave this type of breeding to others, but believe me, Sam uses selfing in breeding.

Many of you are talking about the old ways, and real breeders use real breeding techs etc. The truth is that cannabis for one reason or another lags far far behind other plants when it comes to breeding techniques, and many might rightfully wonder when the real breeding will begin so to speak.

This technique -selfing- it should not be used for maintaining existing inbred lines for one example. It does have a viable places however, in my opinion, like creating new IBL's from elite clones to be outcrossed.

one thing that just occured to me is this,
once this is stable, then you will outcross it, why recreate something that you have now? Why not just outcross it straight away?

this is where my heads at now

when you say stable::::::::::i think of 2 things....

1)alleles in homozygous state

2)Quantitative trait locus.....i theorize, once the polygenic traits have been isolated, that sequence can be extracted and added to a carrier,

when i say outcross,,,,,if im being honest,,i actualy mean...."droping the isolated polygenic trait into a new species of cannabis,

OK I was "thinking" :joint: I have "Parents" their genes are always the same. Lets say the have twenty kids. Two of the kids are "twins". How may kids do they have? Because two of the two are the same? But they are completely different kids?

it will make a difference....the reverced line will allready have moved towards homozygous alleles

Hi Colina, you are quite right in your correction, what I should have said was that Sam says that selfing over 5 generations in his experience with the genes he used lead to sterile males. Which is far from saying that there is no place for selfing techniques.
And I take your point that the genes he used in his example may not be the best to use for repeated selfing to begin with.

Rick, that was refering to reversing for the purpose of crossing the 2 clones, not selfing.

is this right col?

most people dont relize,,,,,,,when a intresexed trait is locked in a seedline, it was probbly there to start with...

within a heterozygous seedlines,,,,like M/F seeds,,,it is easy for an intersexed traits to become set in the recessive alleles,,,

bringing alleles to a homozygote state is probbly the only way to get rid of it of the intersexed issues,,

I feel that people who've concluded that selfing -in and of itself- causes intersexed traits have reached incorrect conclusions.

I don't believe intersexed traits are fully understood yet and are very likely complexly inherited. I do believe that intensive breeding such as selfing is probably the most effective path to rid or gather unwanted or wanted inherited traits from or into a seedline, whether complexly inherited or not.

LOL, to be fair though, I believe he meant sex-reversal selfing as opposed to IBL, Mendelian BX type selfing.

Many of you are talking about the old ways, and real breeders use real breeding techs etc. The truth is that cannabis for one reason or another lags far far behind other plants when it comes to breeding techniques, and many might rightfully wonder when the real breeding will begin so to speak.
I believe that population breeding, traditional pedigree breeding and sex-reversal pedigree breeding all potentially have a legitimate place in the community. Arjan is probably the only breeder that could afford genetic engineering and I sure as hell wouldn't trust that putz with the future of my favorite plant. Therefore ,IMO, maintaining genetic diversity becomes key.

This technique -selfing- it should not be used for maintaining existing inbred lines for one example. It does have a viable places however, in my opinion, like creating new IBL's from elite clones to be outcrossed.
Agreed.

if it's ever legalised, you can bet genetic engineering will kick off big time.
