In short, there are certain problems to overcome to be able to allow the sniffer device to operate optimally. But I remind you of the airplanes that meteorological institutes use to analyze air. To me it always seems weird that an aircraft at that speed can take measurements. What sort of inlet valve do they use to trap a pocket of air and release it? And how do they even know that this amount of air will be representative to the contents of the air.
How can Mars landers do the same thing?
The fact I don't know how that works doesn't mean it is impossible.
Since TNO already has a prototype, it seems they may have found a way to inhale some air and analyze it.
In factories they use sniffer technology to measure the contents of 30.000 bottles an hour to detect bad gasses.
They do so by using certain chemicals that react to certain gasses or particles.
I have no doubt that these sensors can be so sensitive that even in a turmoil of airflow around the blades of a drone helicopter they can catch a pocket of air and do an analysis.
I am also sure that TNO consists of the smartest people in my country and they know all these calculations you have shared.
I am sure this is fascinating but the question is not if they can do it but when. And that time is just about now.
Perhaps you should contact TNO.
I tried to find information on their website on this but I could not find it. Perhaps I will email them but I doubt they are willing to share the depth of this technology with us.

Verger, I do appreciate your concern, and smart meters and other forms of detectors are really bad for growers, but I also think 400W is a tiny grow, and you're over-worrying.
I don't think anyone will be getting caught anytime soon with 400W, especially if it's well insulated from helicopters, and you mask the smell.
Even if you were really paranoid, and/or had a large grow, there is one way you could defeat the 12 hour cycle - start veg at 18-20 hours, then gradually drop the lights bit by bit, and don't have a strict 12/12 cycle.
That would still work, as it would simulate nature, as there's not exactly 12 hours of sun/dark every day for 8+ weeks out in the wild.

How many times do I have to state the same? That I am not concerned over wattage?
You people really need to learn how to read properly.
I have stated at least 5 times now that Wattage is not my concern. Get it through your heads. This thread becomes utterly useless if no one reads or just refuses to understand.
It is not about Wattage. It is about pattern recognition technologies.
I already do what you say. My grow operations involve gradual decreasing the light cycle to mimic a more natural growth.
And that is a pattern that can be found.
And you can grow with 100.000.000 Watts for all I care but if you go down a set amount of time a day you are following a gradient. And these can be picked up by pattern recognition software.
The only thing you can do then is to fool the software by turning on other appliances but even that won't work when your power use constantly 'gradients' down. While your grow op goes down in power-time consumption each day, you would have to make up for the daily difference by using more power than the daily decrease. And then fluctuate the power use so that that itself won't become 'patternised'.
Besides, that costs money because energy is expensive. And it will increase to be expensive. Because of peak oil.
And still my principles remain the same. I rather not have to start using extra power and adding to climate change by using power just to fool a smart meter and a power company. This is an injustifiable waste of electricity. And it is my stance that I shouldn't have to be submitted to the position that the government installs a meter in my house that is in no ones interest regarding privacy.
Like I said, and people complain that I repeat myself, but then again, they don't seem to read at least one post of mine well which would be enough to understand my argument; if they want us to save energy then they should do it by teaching children and adults through campaigns and in schools to be power-aware.
I am not so dumb that I don't understand climate science. Although granted, most people, especially those who call it a hoax or money making scheme, do not for a fact.
So please stop adding messages about wattage.

Alright, then I must learn to program to grow weed? But I suck with numbers. And programming is a lot of numbers.
And I do not want to learn to code just to evade possible detection as therte shouldn't be detection anyways.
How far are you willing to go to smoke? And grow? How many steps back will you do before you realize that no trickery is gonna help anymore?

There are growers here that do this stuff no doubt. Computerized grow ops. But really, John Doe with a closet grow is not gonna go that far and 90% of us really don't care to start growing that hi-tech.

Smart meters have been on the majority of US homes for well over 20 years. If you refuse to adapt to advances, you will fall behind. verger, the cat who mentioned flip-flops was spot on. The reason they'll fool the meters is that the ballast runs 24 hours a day. Every 12 hours the load is switched between two bulbs, so you can power two rooms off one ballast. Since there's no on/off cycle that can be detected, no meter reader or software algorithm can fuck you over. Run your veg lights 24 hours and again, no suspicious cycles. Flip rooms kick ass. You get twice the grow space per light, and the ballasts run at full efficiency all the time, as opposed to running off a timer. When a ballast first is powered on it is less efficient than after it's been running for a while and warmed up. A suitable flip-flop relay costs about $20 and solves your problem. No programming required...
As for the bigger issue of whether smart meters are a good thing, well, really what difference does our opinion really make? the power cos are going to do it if they think it will make them more $ or make their grid more efficient. We have zero input on this matter. So our only option is to be smarter than the meters or move to a location where they haven't been implemented. I mean, come on dude, growers have been using their ingenuity to circumvent stupid laws and detection methods for decades. Do you really think some new power meter will send us all packing?
