Best way to get a good yield using 400 watts (hps)?

Hey, is it better to veg for a long time a couple of plants or a bunch of tiny ones using a 400w? Is it unrealistic to get a pound in one cycle with hps? Thanks.

I would say Yes to the 1 lb dream, light is way too small.

I personally would veg for a long time, then maybe use a scrog to get the buds on an even canopy, your light penetration will drop quickly, and a 400 does not get down very far.

well, in order to get 1 pound from 400 watts of light you would have to have over 1 gram per watt efficiency which while not impossible at all, id guess that its something that you will have to find tune over time, but starting with a heavy yielding strain, using good nutes and what not, id say its a great goal to shoot for.

id veg 4 plants for about a month and then flower, so about every 3ish months you make a harvest, so you would shoot for 4 oz off each plant.

to max your yield do as Dr dog says, scrog (or lst). use mylar on your walls for max light reflection. and to get such yields you would have to be a pretty experienced grower ;D

Yeah, I read it last night, it was amazing. He was doing hydro though, I think you'd have to have more than one plant too. Personally, yeah, if it's in soil I think you would need like 10 plants. You would also have to place the bulb quite high and pray for tight nugs, not to mention skills.

The simple answer is, there is no magic trick to getting a good yield with a 400w.

You have to ask yourself how much work you are planning to put into this and how much experience you have growing. Get a couple of grows under your belt and the yields will come if you work on your short comings.

Experience has no equal.

I'd go for 2 HPS 400. With 24 plants in rockwell blocks using the SCROG techinique. All in 1 massive NFT tub available at 1-hydroponics (google it). Plenty of good nutes and a heavy yielding strain ie: PowerPlant Feminized from Dutch Passion. You could easily get 1oz+ per plant with the right room set-up. Good luck.

A 400w hps can pull a pound per harvest in hydro with the right strain and nutrients. If you're doing hydro try 1-4 plants vegged 3-5 weeks and scrogged in a 4-8sq ft cab for best results. If you do everything perfectly and keep it between 50-100w per sq ft with a high yielding strain you should be able to get 10-16oz off a 400w. If you dont want to do hydro then find a strain that does well in sog...I've seen 2oz per plant @4per sq ft under a 400w. You should be able to pull a gram per watt off any HID light source if you have the grow completely dialed in. :hotbounce

Yes!!! I think about that one all the time. He did 20w/sqft and blew it up. Ppl break the rules and change the game, but no one pays attention.

definitely...

a few SCROG plants + hydro + high yielding strain + dialed-in grow = high yield

Keep the temperature under 85* I lose 20% yield in the summer months.
It's not worth the $$ for an A/C in my case.

I'm using a 400w myself.

my next go around is going to be 4-5 Rez DSD lst'd under a Scrog and for the first time. I've been getting 2oz per plant nearly everytime...but not ideal conditions exactly. I think witha scrog i'll be able to maximize my space more efficiently than lifting pots up and down like i've been doing.

Good luck

Have fun
