And I thought Switzerland had a more tolerant approach to cannabis?

I guess the Heroin PR department is slightly more effective than the cannabis one.

I think that most Swiss don't even understand that marijuana can help heroin addicts from their addiction. To supply synthetic heroin is not the solution.

Heroin is essentially legal in the US in the form of Oxycontin.

Yes it's controlled substance, but it's also prescribed like candy thanks to the massive pharmaceutical lobby whose job it is to sell as much of the drug to the public as possible.

Yet, non-toxic Cannabis is illegal.

You read it wrong-- It actually means that if the crime was over 15 years ago, they couldn't prosecute...now there is no Statute of Limitations--
This is a "Good" thing--
On a separate issue, 52 percent of voters approved an initiative to eliminate the statute of limitations on pornographic crimes against children before the age of puberty.

The current Swiss statute of limitations on prosecuting pedophile pornography is 15 years. The initiative will result in a change in the constitution to remove that time limit.

Its only due to the legal status, and poppies not being grown where they otherwise could be... For example, the US pays Turkey to grow poppies for its opium source, whereas they could be grown domestically, I would imagine....

Instead of editing, I will out myself-- I didn't look at your numbers...I get your point now-- But at least it wasn't "Most" of them--:nanana:

my caregiver was strung out in heroin for 25 years. went through NA and all that. Now all she does is smoke marijuana.
Gotta say 25 years of heroin and now can responsibly smoke everyday.
fuck that shit. get your head straight switzerland, dont wanna legalize cannabis, ok thats you choice, stupid but hey whatever.
LEGALIZING HEROIN???? how stupid do you have to be.

"LEGALIZING HEROIN???? how stupid do you have to be."

Stupid enough to want to help people, reduce the violence, reduce the harm, lessen the damage to society, and respect individual rights. The alternative to wanting to help people, prohibition, is a combination of Al Capone, Usama bin Laden, Manuel Noreiga, and Pablo Escobar taking the place of licensed physicians.

its actually a good idea when you think about it, the main problem with heroin is how addictive it is, opiates themselves are actually relatively benign to the human body, with the exception of the risk of overdose an adiction the harm they cause medically is minimal.(kinda like canna)
the main harms come from the crime usually involved in funding the habit this can be prevented if heroin is prescribed to the addicts legally an they havnt got to pay for it off of criminals an gangs they then dont need to commit crimes to fund there habit. an to top it off they get help with recovery when and if they want it, which is gonna do more than forcing an addict to quit by threatening jail etc when they dont want to.
also puts a damper on the terrorist organisations making money from it to fund their bombs etc, if the whole world adopted this policy the taliban would soon be defeated as over 80% of their income an funding is from the world heroin trade.
also after around 10 - 20 years the amount or addicts would have dramatically decreased with the only available heroin being on prescription to a select few there would be much less chance of new users an young people ever being introduced to the drug in the first place. an also makes the risks of contracting hiv or other deseases much much smaller due to safe needle programmes etc
wots better having crappy/dodgy cut heroin on every street corner available to anyone who wants it or doesnt want it, or a regulated market that has complete control over quality an who gets what an how much etc?? not a hard one to answer really is it.

I applaud some of the answers here--
If you take the "Need for $$" thing out of heroin addiction...you completely remove all criminality--
Give heroin (a remarkably cheap drug to produce) away for free...and BAM!! Junkies are no longer Criminals....just captives of their own chosen addiction--

Well done Switzerland ! I 100% aproove the legalization of heroin program, this is very good thing. But it's indeed sad that MJ remains unlawfull. I guess that more & better information work is needed overthere. If done with heroin, there's no reason why it couldn't be so with MJ !

yea thats true. that shit is fucked... the only thing i can see happen to switzerland is, way more ppl are going to overdosing on heroin then ever before. they are captive to their addiction, and it will probably kill them.

WHAT? oxycontin is just a brand name for time released oxycodone, and oxycodone is VERY different from heroin which is diacetylmorphine. They are metabolized very differently and oxycodone is available in doses as low as 5mg and is a crucial painkiller for post surgery/fracture pain managment. Both of these compounds are remarkably non-toxic if administered correctly. I'm not advocating the use of either but i'm just trying to clear up some misconceptions, heroin is far from legal in the US...
