Sexing and Pruning.... When do I start pruning and how much should I take off?

Latest Update - They Sure Are Stretching!!!!

Latest Update - They Sure Are Stretching!!!!

Greetings Ganja Growers.... Thank you all once again for the help!!! Here's the latest update:
I switched to 12/12 - 2 days ago and now I'm happy to say my first grow is doing much better than I ever imagined they would. They've stretched out 4 inches in 2 days and now I'm confident that I have at least 2 females. I can't identify males yet so I have to wait until I see pistils before I'm sure I got females.... I'm going to give them another 5 days on 12/12 and then I'll yank the ones that haven't show pistils. At the rate these are going now, I'm getting worried about the light/ceiling height. I think I'll need to do some LST if that's the case (unless someone has another alternative/suggestion). Any and all advice is definitely appreciated!

Peace out!

relax, some plants take a while to show sex. it's not like the lights are going on one day and the males spewed out of nowhere.

you will see them and have days before anything happens.

good luck with your grow.

Hey All, Here's an update 1 week into 12/12. I've attached a few pics I took today of the 4 ladies. I'm now sure these 4 are females. I also have a pic of the male that I yanked as soon as I noticed it about (right after I took the pics).

The 4 females are doing great but one of them is about 4 - 5 inches taller than the other 3 so I started a little LST by tying some branches down, hopefully allowing the others to catch up. There were about 3 - 4 inches between internodes on that one.

What do you all think? Anything you can see that looks off or any more advice?

The pics of the roots are from the male. Not sure if anyone can tell me anything by looking at the roots but I want to learn so please speak up!!!

Thanks!

Looking good - just remember they will in all likelihood stretch well into week 4 , so you may find the shorter ones overtaking the tall one. End of week 4 onwards you can usually sleep easier as the fattening up begins and the upward stretch should calm down ( unless you got a sativa dominant tree!)

All I will suggest, as usual, is try and let them do their own thing as much as possible. Many a grower has fussed their plants to death, so just water when needed and feed when required and the girls will reward you.
Happy growing! :)

It's funny you should say that mr.brunch.... My father wanted to just let them be and not tie anything down but my brother and I overruled him in a 2-1 vote lol... We're just going to tie them down long enough to let the other 3 catch up. We have limited allowance for vertical growth (maybe another 12 - 14 inches) so I really want them all around the same height.

Other than that, we're really trying to leave them alone and let them do their own thing as much as possible. The only other thing I'd like to do is some lollipop pruing but every time I try, I end up staring at them, afraid to cut anything off... I'm really not sure what should stay and what should go.

I usually take out the tiny shoots in the bottom middle of the plant- the ones that never get light anyway, as I find this helps with airflow- plus they are only stealing energy from the canopy to give you straggly popcorn.
If it is a larger plant , Or a more sativa strain then I usually strip off the bottom 2-3 sets of branches before flower to push goodness upward and stop them being too wide. Also bear in mind that the lower trimmings generally make lovely clones :)

They're doing well folks!!! Thanks everyone for your help! I took your advice mr.brunch and cut off just a few of the smaller branches and leaves on the bottom and middle of them. I may do one more pruning about 4 weeks into flowering.

Nice job!
Hope you do well from this grow. You will soon find out that it's not the weed that's addictive, it's the growing

Cutting Fan Leaves.... PLEASE HELP!!!

Cutting Fan Leaves.... PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello, I'm starting to lollipop these bitches and I'm getting into a bit of a debate with my father. He wants to just cut the fan leaves and leave the shoots. I think we should either cut the lower branches off or leave them on (not just cut the fan leaves off). I'm having a hard time finding good information on this topic.

Can someone/anyone/everyone please chime in on this? Is there any reason you wouldn't want to cut off the lower fan leaves while leaving the branches? I wish I could explain my question better. We want to thin out the bottom while some of the branches but just cutting the fan leaves? Are there any negative effects to doing this?

Thanks!

You'll slow down the growth if you prune too much so error on the side of under pruning.

I wouldn't do anything from the looks of your plants, get your lights as close as possible and nature will take it's course. LST or supercrop if your canopy becomes uneven.

There are too many variables to say how long they will take to show sex (usually within 30 days I think) but it will be obvious and like one poster here said, you have time to remove them after they show and before they can pollinate the females.

Grind up the leaves and stems of the males and make edibles. Cannabis root Tea has been used for centuries. If you consume the males you might not think of them as being a total loss.

Great stuff DoDad.... I love your username too! If you've read some of my posts, you'll see that I'm doing this project with my dad.

I actually got lucky and have confirmed 4 out of 5 are females. I just yanked the male, cut it up and am drying it out in a brown paper bag so I was wondering what I can do with it. Should I be drying it out first before making my cannabutter? Also, how much weight of plant/lb. of butter? I was also wondering if any of the early trim (the stuff that came off during veg) is worth keeping. Any idea?
I'm interested in learning more about the root tea too. I'll look into it myself but please share any good info you have.

Thanks!

I keep everything I can keep whenever I can get it. Everything is useful.

Most of the cannabutter recipes call for 1 oz of bud or 2 oz of leaves per lb of butter. The lastest rage is the Magic butter machine.

I dry my leaves, grind, then decarb at 240* for 1 hour before I make edibles.

Actually, I then do things a little different. I put the dried decarbed herb in a shaker and add it to food when I want. I add it like seasoning.

The main problem with eating cannabis is the taste. To get away from this I run a rinse of hot water over the decarbed leaf, then dry it before putting in the shaker. Here is a pic of my shaker.

Thanks Easy7 and Tonygreen!
I got the seeds out of a bag of Grape Stomper from friend. He had a Bubblicious hermie that he didn't catch and it ended up seeding his entire crop... Therefore, it's Grape Stomer/Bubblicious mix. I know I'm taking a big risk with my first grow but I wanted to experiment/practice with seeds that I didn't have to buy.

Ugh. One thing to watch...if the mothers hermied, the offspring might as well. Look for strains that don't hermie easily and especially for the first grow.

It might be a good time to order some seeds for the next run. There a many high quality seeds out there at very low costs and it's worth every penny not to hermie 3 months down the road!

Personally, I wouldn't even clone from this Grape Bubble. One run and done is what I would be thinking and especially if you get a hermie too.

Now that you know your plants may hermie, I might learn how to avoid it.

Good Stuff DoDad! Good to know!

Good Stuff DoDad! Good to know!

Thanks DoDad.... I actually found this out not too long ago but it was too late as it was a month into the grow and I didn't have it in me to tear them down. I must say though, you're timing is impeccable on your cloning suggestion. I was just about to post pictures of my first successful clone. I just found roots growing out of one of my cuttings a few hours ago. I doubt I'll do anything with the clones. I've just been experimenting to see if I could get roots (and I'm very happy I did.

As for buying seeds for my next round, I'm already on it... I got Nirvana Ice, Super Skunk and Wonder Woman going.. They're all about 3 weeks old now and (IMHO) doing great!

Anyway, here are some pics I took today of the 1st grow's progress as well as round 2 (Ice, Super Skunk and Wonder Woman) and I figured I'd throw in the pics of my 1st successful clone too.

Thanks for taking interest and offering advice man! I really do appreciate it!!!!

Grow Green,
SuperSativa!

When are plants most likely to show signs of hermie and what should I look for?

As each day passes, I'm getting more and more nervous about any of these becoming hermies. Does anyone know approximately when they're most likely to shows signs if they do hermie? Also, do I just look for balls similar to what I found on the male or are there any other signs I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Yes, it will be obvious balls in flower. If you watch your light leaks, keep your light schedule the same and not stress your plants you might make it to the end.

I recently had a couple of different strains hermie on me in the same tent, but one strain that didn't. This told me which strain I needed to grow and which ones to never grow again given my setup/grow style.

I only grow one strain now (Female Seeds c99) and have not had any hermies since. YMMV

Thanks Man! I'm not sure how long you've been growing but it sounds like you've seen more hermies than I would expect. I didn't think it was really that common of an occurrence. What would you say the odds are that that these could hermie out on me? Are we talking 1 out of 10? 1 out of 100?
