Why tip poor service, you want to promote that? That's not the spirit of tipping if you pay extra for bad service.

In a perfect world eh!. All this relying on tips should end. You do work, you get paid by the employer. The customer is already paying for food and should not be charged for you to give it to them.
I'm more curious how it ever came to be socially accepted. It's actually quite weird if you apply it to other things. How much would you tip the guy who sold you a car for example? 5-10% of $60.000 is a lot to tip!
c'mon DogBoy, can you really compare a car salesman to a pizza guy?

salesman gets a full comission on the car already, a percentage, his paycheck (in the US) has no taxes taken from it and he probably gets a car to use from the lot (licensed & insured by his employer) if he's a good salesman. If he pays for his car he gets to run a depreciation table on it and deduct from his taxes, and the tips he generally gets have to do with the stock market....... pizza guys drive old toyotas.

we're talking two entirely different classes of people here, get real!

regardless if service was less than spectactular, she/he still does her/his job..maybe not as well or as enthusiastic, hence the 15%..
she still deserves something unless she/he totally f's up..
just can't see not tipping when half or more of their wages are from tips..IDK brought up that way i guess..

Dawgbwoi is right. I live in one of the few countries where you don't tip on nothing, and it's better this way. The employees get paid by the hour (+extras for nightshifts and weekends) and don't have to depend on the kindness of strangers. Of course you can tip, if you feel the need to.. But ppl rarely do.

There's this one beer joint where they have a cup @ the bar that sezz "Tipping is not just a town in China" asking for change..
But what am i gonna pay x2 for the beer just cause you have to use your hands? Hell no, if you ends aren't meeting, get a better job, fucking guy, i shouldn't have to pay extra just to get decent service.

Don't get me wrong, not hating on the waiters, but demand your rights from your employer, not the customer, cause after all, the customer is already keeping you boss in business.

And if u'r wondering, there ain't no town called Tipping in China.

I find it highly interesting how people tip in casinos. I'm not talking about drink tips. I'm talking about tipping the dealers.

I think this is one of the few industry's in that its completely accepted to only tip if your making money.

I always tip, unless the service was absolutely horrible...

I've worked in restaurants before and there's nothing worse than a foreigner who plays the "I don't know how to tip" card... You know damn well how to tip you french bastard... (no offense to any french people)

I love to play that card, next to "get outta jail free" card, it's one of the best cards out there imo. And i play it honest, too.. I really hate to learn the tipping procedure in every country, every state. Across the streets a different state dude! Here it's 15%, they only have 8% there.. And keep your hands off the waitress! This 'Hooters' doesn't work like that.

Not to mention the f'n math, i hate math :)

And in defence of the french, they directly include a 15 percent service charge in your check. So you don't have to calculate, if u'r eating out, u'r tipping too.. At least in Paris. So i wouldn't blame em for not tipping, they prolly think they already are..

It's not about the ice cream, it's about the tips bro

Car salesman get commission on the sale. Your analogy does not work,

OK,
here's my one 'no tip' story I have to tell on my part:

I'm driving my tuck north on I-95 in Delaware one day near supper time. I'm fairly certain it was Newark DE and the restaurant was red, barn shaped & very popular/busy, a big parking lot allowing truck traffic told me it was good to go. Me & my helper were seated by our waitress who has to notice the truckers uniforms & my drivers log book (any waitress along the I-95 corridor worth her salt knows what a drivers log book is) I put on the table. She asks us what beverages we want, I order coffee saying "strong and plenty of it please." Do I need to tell you all that's CODE for 'keep my cup full', duh!

She comes back w/beverages and takes our order, 15 minutes now goes by and we haven't seen her for the last 10 mins of it, I only needed more coffee, so my 2nd cup of coffee I get myself from the bar by walking up with my empty cup. 10 more minutes goes by and she arrives with the food nearly throwing it onto the table and scurrying away without asking if there was anything else she could get us as my coffee cup sits glaringly empty! She's 3 steps away from the table when I say "excuse me!" to get her attention, she turns and says in a rushed and annoyed tone to me, "now what do you want?" so I pointed to my coffee cup, she made a disgusted looking face turned and walked away then returned to fill my cup.

My helper couldn't believe his eyes & ears and knows I take no shit (he's my bosses nephew) especially when it's given w/o being provoked by me. I insisted he leave no tip (I buy the meals but helpers usually contribute to tips) as his service was as sketchy as mine was and of course I left 2 cents and a note telling the bitch how she lost out on a guy that generally over tips, she had damned well better know a trucker tips on his coffee cup especially after it's made known that he needs it to remain filled.......

great service gets over tipped by me, add in the helpers tip (or tips w/2 helpers) & I've seen the total table tip go over 30-35% on the bills bottom line sometimes.

the place was busy but not crazy busy so there was no excuse for what happened, dining out on my own since the 60s and that was the first and last time I've left no tip. That was without a doubt the WORST table service I've ever experienced.

EDIT:
Now who knows the name of that joint? It's too big
& close to I-95 not to be known by someone here.

In the instance where the waiter treats you with utter disrespect, leaving a subpar tip is reasonable.

The argument has been with the people who say "I don't tip because fuck you, get a better job." They can't see the obvious truth of the matter is that if everyone did go get a better job, there'd be no one to wait on you... so then the restaurants would have to hire people and pay them a reasonable wage. And the extra 8-10 an hour for each waiter would add anywhere between $24-1000+ per hour to his bottom line. Which means he'd have to charge more for the food! So if you could have it your way, you'd have to pay more![/i] So why not tip people who do a decent job and quit being such a selfish jerk? Think of everyone, the greater good, society, jesus, satan or whoever you like and just be a decent human being.

If your waiter ignores you on purpose, acts like you're an asshole for needing service... don't tip that guy. But if you get what you ordered in a reasonable manner then give at least 15% or more if they do anything to wow you.

People who live in countries where this does not apply and people are not depending on your tips need not follow this rule IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY. But if you travel somewhere, why not take the time to learn a little bit about its culture? Most guidebooks I've seen tell you when tipping is recommended.

Why is it that every country thinks Americans are snobby douche bags because Americans have no culture, yet when they travel in America, they do exactly the same thing?

Maybe people wealthy enough to be world-travelers are douche bags and the country of origin is not really applicable.

haha, 150 posts in a day. didnt know so many people felt so strongly about tipping. thinking my next thread probably wont be as popular. i should use this as a case study for psychology.

Tipping for good service in the US is standard. Tipping for great service requires a great tip (over 20%). I know in other countries it isn't the custom or even neseccary. Here, the service industry depends on it. Please tip the people that take care of you, if you didn't feel that they did, don't just not tip them, let their manager know why.

Just to be clear - the OP was a pizza delivery DRIVER...

His rant about not getting tips...

My apathy towards borderline "service" jobs that expect a little something extra, for doing their jobs...

That's it.

I do tip - I have tipped - I will tip...

But not if I don't want to - and certainly not to those fringe jobs that don't make enuff $$$ doing the job they were hired to do, at the rate they agreed to.

I also wouldn't re-negotiate a contract I had made, if it turned out I made a bad deal. Or be like one of those spoiled athletes that hold out for more $$$ than their contract sez, just because they exceeded expectations.

My original post stands - but I respect most of ya for having the stones to at least say SOMETHING...

Just call me Mr fucking Pink. Tipping automatically is for the birds. If you earn it a tip. Go above and beyond the call of duty I will tip. The few times I have been tipped for the service work I do, I refuse one time. If they offer again. I take the cash.

I refuse to eat an establishment where tips are automatically added to the bill. If the actual cost of the meal is 20% higher than the posted menu RAISE THE FUCKING PRICE.
