use dried/aged bamboo, not green if you want it to last.
here's how you make a nice bamboo smoking pipe thats good for one hits of bud or excellent for smoking dry sift
!) cut a thin length of bamboo, I prefer about a 30 cm/12 inches long and about as thick as a man's finger tapering down to half that thickness..but thicker bamboo works too, so does shorter lengths.
2) use a straightened out metal coat hanger and twist off the spiral end to use as a "drill" to poke and twist through the internal segments of the bamboo. If the break is not jagged enough then use a pair of pliers to make it rougher so it bites through the internal walls.
3) use a sharp pointed knife or box cutters etc to carve out the bowl hole,
4) use a rounded object like the end of a ball point pen to force the mesh into the bowl opening, do it right and the mesh will stay in place and form a bowl shape, or use thin tie wire to hold the mesh in mesh if necessary, Force the bottom of the mesh towards to mouthpiece so the bud coal doesn't burn the inside of the bamboo under the bowl, this point is important with very thin pipes, less so with thicker bamboo.
5A) if you don't have mesh, turn off the main water supply, unscrew a faucet and remove the wire mesh filter and use this as your bowl/mesh.....
5B)or if mesh is not available (and you don't have a monkey wrench) cut a thinner piece of bamboo, 0.5 ~ 1.0 inch long and fit/force this into the hole, angled towards the mouthpiece so you can watch the burn and control your smoke better.....cut this short bowl stem so there's a segment inside to act as a bowl and then use your drill (aka the coat hanger) to make a bowl hole or holes, also cut the bottom of the stem with a half moon that points towards the mouthpiece so the smoke travels easily towards you.
6) It's often difficult to make two pieces of bamboo airtight, so make it as tight as you can then use a lit candle and drip hot wax around the stem/pipe join and use a knife or flat stick to force the pliable wax into the gaps all around, then a lighter to smooth it, take away the excess wax
7) rub the mouth end of the pipe on concrete or rough sand paper to narrow it down as a mouthpiece.
8) thin bamboo is not that easy to hold, so wrap damp string around tightly in places to improve the grip. when the string or twine dries it will be tight, dry wrapped string tends to loosen easily.
9)fast to make, natural, unbreakable, lasts for ages and smokes very cool.....and when it's time to retire it you can use it as a stake in a pot plant!
Happy Ghetto pipe making!
