Anyone ever notice how slugs will tear a mushroom down as fast as possible? I was at a national park recently an a lot of the mushrooms had what looked like colonies of slugs around and over them and since I was camping I watched many mushrooms rise and already be decimated lol.

Last spring in my back yard we harvested approximately 19lbs of king and butter boletes in like 10 mins, not even a single bug. turn around and sold half of em to this local guy,then he made me a bolete burger....mmmm. one of my most memorable mushroom hunts, didnt even walk for a 1/4 mile. BE CAUTIOUS WHEN PICKING MUSHROOMS IN THE CITY! Mushrooms absorb everything around their medium including heavy metals and other carcinogens. no train track shrooms or side of the road shrooms...bad news. Has anyone taken classes on mycology here? very interesting and a great possible career. -quadracer do you have the field guide that goes with mush demystified? "all the rain promises and more" nice and handy for those less familiar possibilities in the field.

Here's what we find in my area, famous for its mushrooms. Genuine "cepes" (porcini I think you say in English). A true delight!

Kahl, "All That The Rain Promises" is an amazing book, especially since it is written from the perspective of my area. A good friend has a copy, and I use hers in a bind.

Hopefully these rains re-invigorates things in the ground, the season is looking somewhat sad this year

I keep that book in my car just in case i ever see an interesting shroom. Yes very sad indeed, hopefully the farmers almanac is correct. a wetter than normal end of february, lets hope this is just the start.

Hi again my friends,

I found a few pics from last june on my hard drive.

Spring gathering of girolles (chanterelles) that were divine, plus one or two cepes.

I'm now patiently waiting for the morel season, around april. Unlike other mushrooms, I usually find them in my very garden at the foot of apple trees !

yeah the morel season should be coming here soon. Thank god there were so many fires last year, there may actually be something that resembles a mushroom season.

I've never picked food mushrooms, only P. Semilanceata which are everywhere in my area come Sept. Grew some P. Cubensis from a kit in '01, were fascinating to watch from start to finish.

Morels are also pretty abundant around these parts as well. Couple springs back after a rain they were poppin' up everywhere. Pan. subbalteatus are the only psychedelic mushrooms that grow anywhere near here, and being so common, you probably have some around your home when the conditions are right.

Morals will start to pop up at the end of april in Oklahoma. These I found last year. I will miss them now that I don't live there.

Nice to see you have exactly the same species in the U.S as we have in Europe. Over here, at 44.5 deg. north, they'll start to appear in may-june.

What is that Indica Jones, Pint jars, PF style for the PE, and whole rye (going to bulk sub? or just straight up casing) for the Thai?

It's been awhile but last year I had a mildly successful run, just 3 pints of rye straight cased with coir/verm, got just over an oz off the first flush. Before that it had been probably more than 5 years since I last grew. It's amazing how quickly they go from primordia/pins to full blown fruit bodies. Or from spores to harvest for that matter.

Yeah, fruiting takes about 72 hours............LOL. The mycellium that you see in the jars sometimes takes about 4 weeks till full colonization. Sometimes quicker if you dial in the temp, humidity, and air.

First time with this strain................I heard that it loves casing in straw. I first want to see how many flushes I get PF style as well. Nothing beats casing though. PF is just quicker..........LOL. I just inoculated some Yellow Oyster and some brown Lion's mane I got from Oregon that should make some lovely omeletes.

I would usually but my incubating jars into, a well, erm, incubator. Double tub, bottom one filled with water and a 10gal fish tank heater, bunch of wire ties to hold the top tub that wants to float to the bottom one. I would go with quart jars and they would take 2-3 weeks to before full colonization in the incubator.

Yeah, you gotta give it to the PF tek for a quick batch, not going to yield a whole lot but it doesn't get much easier. But casings or spawning to bulk sub is the way to go IMHO. It's nice to just pretty much set it and forget it. Hmm, all this talk, maybe it's time to bust out the supplies!

have you guys ever tried to innoculate a compost pile with bulk substrate?

You would have to pasterize the compost pile first. Maybe run some steam through it? I like to use peat moss and verm for a casing mix. I like it to be as clean and soiless as possible. Straw...............I am really starting to love it. Using a clothes basket and straw will yield me about 10lbs of shrooms.
