Hash oil techniques and solvents for non BHO hash oil?

Seed Whore
Yesterday, I made the mistake of not rinsing my charcoal which caused lots of cloudiness.
So today, I tried again with rinsed charcoal and t still came thru dark colored but a tiny bit
clearer. I even passed clean N-Hexane thru the charcoal and it came out fairly clear.

So I don't know anymore. :moon:

This anthocyanin thing will hopefully be smokable.

I'll have to reclaim my N-Hexane via distillation and hope for the best later. :puppydoge

My airlock on my 3 gallon fermenter is popping like mad.
At least I know the yeast are working hard.

BTW: Just came back from my local grow store and they have 4L jugs of 99% isopropanol for sale.

I wonder what that could be used for?

The ethyl butyrate from Thailand arrived. See pictures below. PerfumersWorld never sent tracking info, and I had to sign for it.

Smells heavenly and evaporates fast.

"Ethyl butyrate, also known as ethyl butanoate, or butyric ether, is an ester with the chemical formula CH3CH2CH2COOCH2CH3. It is soluble in propylene glycol, paraffin oil, and kerosene. It has a fruity odor, similar to pineapple. It occurs naturally in many fruits.

It is commonly used as artificial flavoring resembling orange juice or pineapple in alcoholic beverages (e.g. martinis, daiquiris etc.), as a solvent in perfumery products, and as a plasticizer for cellulose. In addition, ethyl butyrate is often also added to orange juice, as most associate its odor with that of fresh orange juice.

Ethyl butyrate is one of the most common chemicals used in flavors and fragrances. It can be used in a variety of flavors: orange (most common), cherry, pineapple, mango, guava, bubblegum, peach, apricot, fig, and plum. In industrial use, it is also one of the cheapest chemicals, which only adds to its popularity."

Update: as of 5/23/'17 this is still unavailable from Amazon, though my own order remains in place.

Sears Marketplace sent me a gallon of Beacon Solvent and Thinner (heptane.)

Beacon Solvent and Thinner is being touted as the replacement for Bestine, and that's what I received.

I couldn't find a MSDS for it and sent Beacon a request. Be aware! I searched the MSDS's of similar products, and they're not pure heptane!!!

That said, I'm so confident Beacon is 100% heptane that when I found a gallon for $50 delivered to my door at Sears Marketplace I ordered. I'll keep you updated. :)

I'd love to see a typical Certificate of Analysis along with the MSDS.

Here are some similar products (FDA USP <467> Residual Solvent Class 3's) sold and delivered to anyone in the US by Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/MG-Chemicals...&qid=1494353258&sr=8-1&keywords=ethyl+acetate

https://www.amazon.com/MG-Chemicals...&qid=1494353292&sr=8-2&keywords=butyl+acetate

Dimethyl carbonate hasn't been classified yet, seems Class 3, it's green and relatively non-toxic,

https://www.amazon.com/MG-Chemicals...1494353413&sr=8-1&keywords=dimethyl+carbonate

All three were delivered to my residential address, and no, I don't have a business account.

:whee:

Amazon shipped me a 500ml bottle of ethyl formate. I have another order for three more, they're supposed to ship next week.

Here's the link, you order and wait,

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DYO8LAK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Ethyl formate is an ester formed when ethanol (an alcohol) reacts with formic acid (a carboxylic acid). It is also known as ethyl methanoate because formic acid is also known as methanoic acid. Ethyl formate has the characteristic smell of rum and is also partially responsible for the flavor of raspberries. It occurs naturally in the body of ants and in the stingers of bees.

Exposure
Ethyl methanoate is generally recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFRSearch.cfm?fr=184.1295

According to the U.S Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), ethyl formate can irritate eyes, skin, mucous membranes, and the respiratory system of humans and other animals; it is also a central nervous system depressant. In industry, it is used as a solvent for cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, oils, and greases. It can be used as a substitute for acetone; workers may also be exposed to it under the following circumstances:

during spray, brush, or dip applications of lacquers
during the manufacture of safety glass
when fumigating tobacco, cereals, and dried fruits (as an alternative to methyl bromide under the U.S. Department of Agriculture quarantine system)

OSHA considers a time-weighted average of 100 parts per million (300 milligrams per cubic meter) over an eight-hour period as the permissible exposure limit. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) also considers a time-weighted average of 100 ppm over an eight-hour period as the recommended exposure limit.

In space
Astronomers have identified ethyl formate in dust clouds in an area of the Milky Way galaxy called Sagittarius B2. The astronomers, from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany, used the 30 metre IRAM radiotelescope in Spain to analyse the spectra of radiation emitted from hot regions near a new star. It is among 50 molecules identified by the astronomers.

Notice how it compares to my other solvents listed as to polarity,

The chemist at Manofohm said it was very popular when he had it in stock.

I'll post up pics of the ethyl formate when it arrives.

Examine the Class 2 list, several have way higher allowable exposure rates than hexane, i.e. cyclohexane, methanol, and xylene.

I decided to add those three to my cache for testing, two or three others might also be worth trying, just not by me at this time.

From the FDA USP Residual Solvent <467> guidelines:

The quart of Sunnyside Xylol (xylenes) arrived yesterday. The only hazard labeling was the blue ORM-D shown in the packaging picture. No signature was necessary for delivery.

I was pouring the contents of the can into a reagent bottle and noticed a grey tint, and then due to there being more than expected in the can I poured the remainder into a smaller bottle, and found the grey mass impurity, you can see globs of it in the picture. It doesn't dissolve in the xylene, and it seems to have been completely removed by simply filtering through 2.5 micron lab filter paper. There are other sources of xylene, so I won't go on further about it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylene

"Xylene is used as a solvent. In this application, with a mixture of isomers, it is often referred to as xylenes or xylol. Solvent xylene often contains a small percentage of ethylbenzene. Like the individual isomers, the mixture is colorless, sweet-smelling, and highly flammable.

Xylene is flammable but of modest acute toxicity, with LD50 ranges from 200 to 5000 mg/kg for animals. Oral LD50 for rats is 4300 mg/kg. The principal mechanism of detoxification is oxidation to methylbenzoic acid and hydroxylation to hydroxylene.

The main effect of inhaling xylene vapor is depression of the central nervous system (CNS), with symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. At an exposure of 100 ppm, one may experience nausea or a headache. At an exposure between 200-500 ppm, symptoms can include feeling "high", dizziness, weakness, irritability, vomiting, slowed reaction time.

The side effects of exposure to low concentrations of xylene (< 200 ppm) are reversible and do not cause permanent damage.

One report contained data that shows that long-term exposure to low levels of xylene led to a decrease in balance, coordination, and reaction times in participants. These are examples of how it affects the CNS.

Long-term exposure may lead to headaches, irritability, depression, insomnia, agitation, extreme tiredness, tremors, impaired concentration and short-term memory. This condition is sometimes generally referred to as "organic solvent syndrome". Unfortunately, there is very little information available that isolates xylene from other solvent exposures in the examination of these effects.

Xylene is also a skin irritant and strips the skin of its oils, making it more permeable to other chemicals.

To reduce the risk of developing health problems from occupational exposure, one must wear gloves and a mask to prevent high concentrations of inhalation and skin irritation from Xylene."

It is extremely non-polar, compare at the list my cache of solvents arranged as to polarity,

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=7933632&postcount=162

The problem with it is it has a strong odor, reminds me of the odor of felt tip markers from decades ago, you can sniff it and get dizzy. On the other hand, get some on your fingers, and at the point of complete evaporation, the odor completely disappears, happens like magic, so it might be purgeable, and for sure you'll know if you got it all out.

The ethyl formate is scheduled for delivery today. :woohoo:

Notice how it compares to my other solvents listed as to polarity,

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=7933632&postcount=162

The chemist at Manofohm said it was very popular when he had it in stock.

Pictures of another solvent from HiMedia delivered via Amazon,

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=7922415&postcount=143

I'll post up pics of the ethyl formate when it arrives.

Icy, ethereal to the nose, and evaporates completely in seconds, nothing but the clear ether odor as it dissipates.

I hope everyone can get some. It says one to two month wait at Amazon, and they still haven't sent me my other three bottles, but the ad hasn't changed to unavailable, so I encourage you to make an order and give it a chance, they don't charge you until it ships. :)

Best overall solvent so far.

Try to keep any ester you use as dry as possible and in a neutral solution.

With water and an acid or base. Hydrolysis will occur.

Drying tubes attached to your extraction equipment will help. :tiphat:

You might like methyl formate yet more, even though the FDA neglected it. That's probably one you'd have to make yourself if you wanted some.

The different C8 aromatics have different polarities and it's really the p-xylene that's super nonpolar not that it makes a difference. Maybe some are more markerry than others because I know what you mean when smelling the Jasco brand, but Klean-Strip is not as loud. n-propanol is another one that would instantly make you think markers.

 I haven't yet found a friendly methyl formate supplier (delivered to my residential address, no business account required.)

All the large chem houses carry it, Spectrum has HPLC grade for $35.39 a liter,

https://www.spectrumchemical.com/OA...site=10020&respid=22372&phrase=methyl formate

To further discover the availability of xylene in California, I ordered a quart each of Klean-Strip's, and MG Chemicals' through Amazon.

I found n-propanol to have a very simple gentle alcohol odor, it's mixed with other gentle alcohols in modern markers producing the slightly funky odor.

The iso-amyl acetate from PerfumersWorld arrived. I wasn't emailed the tracking number, and my signature was necessary at the door. Pleasant exchange with the post man about the contents, and why it was coming all the way from Thailand. :)

$65.50 total for 500ml. I used PayPal, they quickly confirm your address, and two weeks from the date of purchase you have it.

https://www.perfumersworld.com

Ripe pear/banana odor, medium fast evaporation rate. A damp piece of paper towel goes to fully dry in a few minutes, the odor goes with it, at the end it's just a delicate perfume fading to nothing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isoamyl_acetate

"Isoamyl acetate, also known as isopentyl acetate, is an organic compound that is the ester formed from isoamyl alcohol and acetic acid. It is a colorless liquid that is only slightly soluble in water, but very soluble in most organic solvents. Isoamyl acetate has a strong odor which is also described as similar to both banana and pear. Banana oil may be either pure isoamyl acetate, or flavorings that are mixtures of isoamyl acetate, amyl acetate, and other flavors.

Isoamyl acetate is used to confer banana flavor in foods. Pear oil commonly refers to a solution of isoamyl acetate in ethanol that is used as an artificial flavor.

It is also used as a solvent for some varnishes and nitrocellulose lacquers. As a solvent and carrier for materials such as nitrocellulose, it was extensively used in the aircraft industry for stiffening and wind-proofing fabric flying surfaces, where it and its derivatives were generally known as 'aircraft dope'. Now that most aircraft are all-metal, such use is now mostly limited to historically accurate reproductions and scale models. In addition, isoamyl acetate serves as an alarm pheromone in honey bees.

Because of its intense, pleasant odor and its low toxicity, isoamyl acetate is used to test the effectiveness of respirators or gas masks. It is also used in thermometers.

Isoamyl acetate occurs naturally in the banana plant, and it is also produced synthetically.

Isoamyl acetate is released by a honey bee's sting apparatus where it serves as a pheromone beacon to attract other bees and provoke them to sting.

Properties:
Chemical formula C7H14O2
Molar mass 130.19 g·mol−1
Appearance colorless liquid
Odor banana-like
Density 0.876 g/cm3
Melting point −78 °C (−108 °F; 195 K)
Boiling point 142 °C (288 °F; 415 K)"

Btw, Amazon shipped both the Klean-Strip and MG Chemicals Xylol/Xylene, and Right Price Chemicals should be shipping the four liter jug of iso-pentane next week.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopentane

"Isopentane, C5H12, also called methylbutane or 2-methylbutane, is a branched-chain alkane with five carbon atoms. Isopentane is an extremely volatile and extremely flammable liquid at room temperature and pressure. The normal boiling point is just a few degrees above room temperature and isopentane will readily boil and evaporate away on a warm day. Isopentane is commonly used in conjunction with liquid nitrogen to achieve a liquid bath temperature of −160 °C. It is 1% or less of natural gas.

Properties:
Chemical formula C5H12
Molar mass 72.15 g·mol−1
Appearance colorless liquid
Odor odorless
