It probably is a human construct because it's used mainly to gage the likelihood of things not yet occurring or things unknown. To the best of my knowledge Man is the only creature that tries to predict the future or figure out the unknown.
Like with your Alien contact example. Many people agree that aliens exist even though we have no conclusive proof they do because with the size of the universe and the staggering numbers of galaxies, stars and planets the probability that life exists elsewhere is very high or conversely the idea we are the only form of life in all the universe is very low.
The contact part on the other hand is very improbable due to the vast distances between galaxies, stars and planets making travel between galaxies very unlikely or at best impractical.

It is. The true Self is behind the "self", which is just how we process and respond. True Self gets easier for me to get a hint of when I'm able to clear the noise from my mind.what if our "self" is an imposter?

I got stoned, then needed a phillips screw driver. Out in the garage I have to get on my tractor on one side then get off on the other to get to my work bench. I got out of there safely but forgot the screw driver. Thinking about dedicating the afternoon to clean up but the mess keeps my wife out of there so I'm not sure.
