DEA Scoffs Obama: Raids California Dispensary

Call the White House Immediately!

Dear ASA Supporter,

Can you believe that DEA would act so quickly to undermine and disregard the statements made by President Obama?

Today, the Drug Enforcement Administration, currently staffed by officials from the Bush Administration, raided a medical cannabis dispensary in South Lake Tahoe, California. They did so knowing full well that President Obama has repeatedly pledged to end federal threats, arrests, and prosecutions of patients and their providers in medical cannabis states.

We are shocked and awed! For DEA to act with such brazen arrogance and in direct conflict with the new President’s pledge to end federal raids is deeply concerning. With only weeks left in office, it is clear that top DEA officials are using this transitional period to exploit the differences in policy between the old and new administration.

We need you to act… and we need you to act NOW!

Call President Obama and urge that he issue an immediate suspension to all federal funds used to investigate, intimidate, arrest, and prosecute individuals who use or provide medical cannabis in accordance with their state laws. Call the White House at (202) 456-1111 and say:

"Hi, my name is _____________. Today, the Drug Enforcement Agency raided a medical cannabis dispensary in Tahoe, California. The dispensary was raided by DEA despite numerous statements by President Obama saying he would end federal interference with state medical cannabis laws. I'm very concerned about outgoing DEA officials undermining these state laws and aggressively threatening innocent Americans. I'm also concerned about DEA taking action that is an affront to President Obama's position. I am pleading with President Obama to issue an immediate suspension of all federal funds used to investigate, intimidate, arrest, or prosecute individuals who use or provide medical cannabis in accordance with their state laws. We are being threatened by our own DEA. Please help us."

President Obama's position on medical marijuana is no secret. This is the single most important action you have been asked to take this year. We need President Obama's support. Once you’ve made this phone call, please forward this message to friends and family. Then visit www.whitehouse.gov/contact to copy and paste the above message.

Sincerely,

First Medical Marijuana Raid by DEA under Obama Administration
Advocates call on president Obama to quickly change harmful, outdated policy

Oakland, CA -- The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) raided a medical marijuana dispensary today in South Lake Tahoe, California, in the first days of the new Obama Administration. Even though President Barack Obama had made repeated promises during his election campaign to end federal raids in medical marijuana states, many high-ranking Bush Administration officials have yet to leave office. For example, still at the helm of the DEA is acting Administrator Michele Leonhart, who has been responsible for numerous federal raids in California, following in the footsteps of her predecessor Karen Tandy. Neither Eric Holder, President Obama's pick for U.S. Attorney General, nor a new DEA Administrator, have taken office yet.

"Whether or not this unconscionable raid on a medical marijuana provider is the fault of federal officials from the previous administration, President Obama has an opportunity to change this harmful and outdated policy," said Caren Woodson, Director of Government Affairs for Americans for Safe Access (ASA). "We are hopeful that these are the last remnants of the Bush regime and that President Obama will quickly develop a more compassionate policy toward our most vulnerable citizens."

Medical marijuana and an unknown amount of cash was seized during the raid today from Holistic Solutions, but no arrests were made. This first DEA raid under the new Obama Administration is another example of more than 100 raids on medical marijuana providers that have occurred in California over the past two years. While the greatest federal enforcement has occurred in California, the DEA has been active in other states as well. Federal agents raided the Washington State offices of a medical marijuana advocacy group that was supplying starter plants to hundreds of authorized patients. In Oregon, a federal grand jury was used by the DEA to obtain the medical records of several patients, an effort that was later rejected by a federal court. The DEA also went as far as to threaten New Mexico officials for planning to implement that states medical marijuana distribution program.

"I would not have the Justice Department prosecuting and raiding medical marijuana users," Senator Obama said in an August 2007 statement. "It's not a good use of our resources," he continued. This statement was followed up by Obama in other public events in the run up to the election. "President Obama must rise to the occasion by quickly correcting this problem and by keeping the promise he made to the voters of this country," said Woodson. ASA has been working with the new Administration on changing federal law around medical marijuana, which has included providing a comprehensive set of policy recommendations.

alright Kal-El, I made my phone call and sent my note. Just a little FYI here. the cut and pasting of the statement you asked us to cut and paste to the whitehouse exceeds the allowable number of spaces and cuts off the statement about 2 sentences early, then you must go in an make it make sense, cause it stops at "...is an affront to President Obama's position. I"

Bwahhaha!

Just because the new pres says he wants to end federal raids doesn't mean it's gonna happen.

The SUPREME COURT has already decided, in two separate cases no less, that state law does not interfere with Federal law, and vice versa.

The fed laws are still on the books. Obama can't overturn or superceed a supreme court decision so the only thing obama can do is to change fed law, and if you think that's goning to happen, I have a bridge in brooklyn to sell you.

Obama is the CEO of the DEA. He can tell them where he does and does not want their efforts expended.

Fuck obama, he changed his stance on marijuana like six times in six years. Do more research, the fucker doesn't want to legalize/decriminalize even. He CLEARLY states this in several speeches. He is just another problem like all before him, the power lies in the states. The simple fact that states rights are being blatantly violated should be enough. I do not put any faith on the great "black" hope this fucker has become to this country. He is far more full of shit than Clinton was (who didnt do shit for marijuana) even though we all know Clinton had the classic stoner look about him. So i say if you are writing letters, send them to our supreme court justices and let them know the outrage, but why waste words on Obamas deaf ears. Just my humble opinion on the matters.

Obama's got his jacket off and hard at work in the oval office. But hard at work for whom? His Wall Street buddies! Don't you all realize this? Money talks. Money makes the world go 'round. Get out of the cloud of pot smoke, my brothers, and realize he ain't going to do SHIT for us unless we take it to HIM and CONgress. And now I've just realized the July 4th thing is a sit-in around the White House. FUCK THAT! I thought we were having a MLK type thing at the Lincoln Memorial overlooking the Washington Memorial reflecting pool. I'm not setting foot in DC unless it is CONFIRMED we are having a shindig at the Lincoln Memorial like MLK had. And nothing is going to happen until those with money see an opportunity to make more money from pot and we have a grand event like MLK had.

Hello all,

I hear you all complaining about why Obmama has not done for MJ...three days in an you are crying about mj....

With so many other things going on like oh the economy for instance.

Truely short sighted in my opinion. I attribute this to youth, inexperience and just a bit nieve.

Well, I guess we all got our priorities, misplaced as it may be. For you see, mj medical or otherwise is not going to fix the ills of the country.

I am not blind to the fact the Obama is beholding to his constituants but the greater good must be served and other political, economy and industrial issues deserve a greater priority.

Look to the second term to see changes if any in the mj stance. Assuming of course we don't have significant castastrophes between now and then.

Futher, while I am thinking about it...our futile efforts of using corn as an alternative energy source is infinitely flawed as it cost more to produce then the benefits of using corn ethonal. However, industrial hemp is much more viable and produces more energy per acre then corn for less. I read this and have no links so check it atyour own leisure.

So, if you want to rant at Obama, this is another issue you can use. The paper industry can benefit also...but you know these things...tell Obama this.

There is a common argument being presented lately.

That is that if Obama takes care of our medical marijuana situation, he will be unable to do anything else.

I think he has a little higher set of abilities than this argument gives him credit for.

Minds I, you miss the point. Every Pres. is judged by the first 3 months he takes office. His creditability will be hurt if he doesn't keep any and all promises. Read my lips...............Don't F**K Up!
