Hey Dopeeyo, i love your mini cab...i'm living in an apartment and am dying from not having a grow, i think i'm just going to go for it with a CFL grow like this, i've only done large scale grows before so this should be fun. what kind of fan are you using? i like that it's adjustable. are you just growing in a shelving unit?

Eli Bloom:
Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words. The fan is just
a 120 mm computer fan sucking thru a cheapo homemade
carbon scrubber that sits above the cab. Like so:

The cab is just a box made from eight 24" x 12" melamine shelves
(one each for sides, top, and bottom, two each for front and back.
No painting and very little sawing, drill some holes and turn some screws.
Turns out like this:

The grate is rubber-coated metal and sits about 3-4 inches down
from the lights - it doesn't get too warm, and soon will be covered
with leaves and buds!

Here's today:

It's about flipping time:

Went to 12/12 the other day, hopefully not too late...time will tell.

Here's a current pic, should be fun watching the stretch and hoping I don't run out of screen!

more soon!

I used that version of Blumat (they're Austrian btw), and there are a few things you should watch out for:

First, rinse and clean out your water reservoirs every week or two, since algae starts to grow, along with other nasty stuff you don't want.

Additionally, I started getting problems with mold and mildew in the soil, so that's something you might want to keep an eye on, especially if you've got high temperatures and stagnant air. The lower the reservoir, the dryer your soil will be. In my case, it was about 10cm below the pots, and they were getting overwatered.

Real nice clean looking setup. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out, since mine is similar and it's my first grow ever.

Sorry folks, was out of town, time for an update:

leflll: The "screen" is really a shelf (for shoes)
I got at a local discount store. It's rigid and really
strong so the plants can't ever change the level of
the canopy, no matter how hard they all push.
magicbean: Yes, Blumats are Austrian, my bad.
Very good caveat, too, about mold and such for
anyone who hasn't used these waterers before.

I rinse and re-fill these reservoirs each week when
I feed the plants. My soil surface is about 18 cm up
from reservoir water level, and that's been working
well for this size container. The surface soil is never
wet except a day or so after each feeding.

Anyway, here's the gang:

Flowers are starting to form now, we're at about
day 10 of 12/12. As expected given the strains,
the left side of the screen is growing slower
(skunk and NL5) then the right (J2 and C99xA11),
and producing fewer bud sites. Hopefully, it won't
be too lop-sided...

More later...zzzzzzzzzz

Here is the canopy starting to form at about day 15 of 12/12.
I've counted roughly 60 or 70 flowering tops so far, should end
up with maybe 90, and hopefully all uniform size. The buds
have about 6 inches (15 cm) from screen to light bulbs which
should be plenty of room for these strains. Below are close ups
of the left and right sides.

The resistance of the screen really seems to spur on
the growth both above and below the soil.

I never thought about the resistance doing that. Interesting.

The grate is rubber-coated metal and sits about 3-4 inches down
from the lights - it doesn't get too warm, and soon will be covered
with leaves and buds!

My materials I could get together included a metal mesh (uncoated) for a scrog screen, which is probably going to get too hot. I'll keep my eyes out for something more suitable. I'm jealous of your perfectly fitting rubber coated badboy!

Really nice simple setup, plants are looking great!

Strangely: Thanks for stopping by, man...

Fuzz420: Yeah this is the fun part with scrog...
the stretch is ending and the canopy of buds is forming.
I tried counting the tops again this morning and I keep
losing count around 80 something - about twice as many
as I would have got without the screen...and, of course,
no burned tops to worry about, which is nice.

Dimebagg: Hey, thanks...I'm a big fan of your
fiction. Stay tuned, this story should get interesting
soon enough!

Here's today:

plants looking great brother!
couple of questions, 1 how far away are your lights to plants?

and is it just a case of putting the coated grate at a set height for effect?

also do you think i would need to use coated metal as i also use cfl's and they produce minimal heat.

this is how i am growing my micro grow at the moment.

but i have a shelf i can fit just above the heads of the plants

would this give a simular effect you have?

Gavin he is using a scrog technique. Your plants are to far into flowering to get any good results by trying to scrog them now. Start scrogging in veg to get the best results.
