2nd Build-DIY COB with Vero 29's x 6

Update first run

Update first run

Well I've hit a bump in the road. Some kind of mice or vermin got to 4 of my seedlings, dug little tiny holes where the seedlings were. It's my fault, as i was lazy and just had them with my garden starts in an unsecured room in my basement. Good news is i had replacment beans so they got replanted yesterday. They have been moved to a secure tent 30"×30"×60" and have temporary cfl lighting till i can move the roasty rig in there. Should happen tonight or tomorrow and i will post pics. Only 2 sour crack made it out alive and look nice atm. I plan to hang the Roasty Rig© lol, as high as i can and try to find the right current. Too much I'll cook them to little they will stretch. Input and suggestions are welcome.

Sorry to hear that man. I just got a set of 10 100k Pot knobs from Amazon for 6 bux! Thanks for the tip my dimmer works great!

All is good now. Just gonna have 4 plants about 10 days behind. Got a rig over the babes about 4 feet away at around 30-40% power.
Love how cheap the pots are. Glad it worked good for you. Thanks for stopping by db.

moved the lights down to a little over 2 feet away and giving about 50% power. Here's how they are doing.

Note: Vero29s use about 80w each at full power.

When Bridgelux says, (reliable operation at up to two times nominal drive current) ?

More specifically what does that mean ?

The nominal/test current for vero29's is 2100mA. So i guess they can be driven at 4200mA reliably? Idk if that's true, the charts on their data sheet show up to 1.5 nominal current at 3150mA. Just checked and 3150mA is the max current for vero29's. At 2100mA they dish out a lot of light. You get to 80watts at 2100mA. Driven at 3150 they draw 116.5

Sup Roasty! Just got my fanless heatsinks from Mingfa Tech. I will post some pics when I start putting it together. I got 5 for 60bux the shipping was 87 though. Comes out to about 30 bux each. Really fast shipping! 2 days from Hong Kong by DHL. I'm going to a music festival for a week so I will build it when I get back. Now that I got these Blumats I'm ready to roll! Peace brotha

hey roasty great job
i live in europe and i'd like to built something like you did for my 4x4 tent(flowering) to replace my 600w HID ..any advice on how much wattage i should use or how much i can save while not "loosing" lightning coverage ??? my priority is better and cooler light, money saving comes second ;)

Hi natter, good to have you here. I would do 8 cree cxb3590's on 2 drivers at either 1400mA or 1750mA. Build 2 rigs similar to the pictorial, just squeeze 1 more cob in the footprint. To save money you could do 6 vero29's in 2 rigs like in this thread. But new 7th gen vero's should be available in a month or 2. They have much better efficiency than the current version. Glad to help any way i can.

ok thanks..you, petflora and dion are the only ones for me on icmag that i can trust in DIY LED building based on your replys and threads ;)
i was thinking of something like your avatar picture, but with one cob extra in the center...
so 5 main cobs(at ~70w) with maybe some additional supplemental ermitters(some blue, red,uv,ir) like the amare se250... i want at least save 200w from my 600w(plus digital ballast)
and of course i will look forward to the new vero's..

ps. two short pro tipps from EU-growers...use APTUS or GREEN BUZZ LIQUIDS(GBL) or both for nutrients... GBL is 100% organic...aptus the premium new shit from holland much better than advanced nutrients forget this shit... hydro taste like crap its only for commercial use here... do only organic soil or mix with coco etc...

Thanks for that natter! Pet and Dion are who i learned most of my knowledge from (thanks guys), they know their shit. For 5 cobs i think you can get a 320w meanwell that can push 5 at a decent current, 1750mA if I remember correctly. They are $111 here in US. Then add your supplemental on about 70-80w and you'd be at 400w total. If your not worried about cost I would get the crees and heatsinks from cutter. They have good prices and a nice kit if you want to go that route. The driver you'd have to get elsewhere. Mouser is where i get mine. If not in a hurry, I'd wait for the new vero's.

I do love the organics, but right now I'm in love with str8 coco hempy's. Nothing beats the taste of pure organic though.

prices are pretty much the same here in europe...maybe you still get it a little bit cheaper... mouser we have here too...cree's are a little bit expensive
yeah i'm not in a hurry so i will wait and maybe the three of you have build something new with the vero's after/during summer :thank you:

Ya man cree's are expensive, idk if they are that much better than Vero's but are more efficient(at least for now). I bought 4 cxb3590's 90cri 3000k 36v for 207 dollars with ideal chip holders included from Cutter. These chips are $83 a piece from mouser. So I'm going to add them to my avatar build, working on it right now.

Build 1 upgrade

Build 1 upgrade

Just added 4 cxb3590 BD 90cri 3000k 36v on a 1750mA meanwell to my first build. It already had 4 cxb3590 CB 80cri 3000k 36v same driver. Still working on electrical, mechanical was a chore with this metal and shitty hole saw. Decided to silicone where the cob wires meet the metal frame just to be on the safe side. Anywho here is a pic:

I accidentally drilled the two center cobs a little closer together than symmetry would suggest, however it turns out it helped me fit the drivers on the backside. I'll get a pic of the back tomorrow after the silicone dries.

Sexy AF. i really like your work holmz

Wow thanks brah!:thank you:

You might not think it so sexy once you see the backside. I got alot of tidying to do. Just waiting for a grounded extension cord to finish the electrical. Then I'll fire it up.

:woohoo:Fired up all 8 cobs first try, had 1 fan with bad connection. The fan wires are so frail and break easily when wire nutting. Just have to snug them not he-man it.

Took this pic at full dim. 1 pot with 2 sets of terminals dims both drivers simultaneously.
