June 23, 2011 | 9:36 am
Three suspects were in custody Thursday in a Brea shooting that left one man dead in a robbery attempt on two Los Angeles marijuana dispensary employees, police said.
Brea police responded to a call at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday about multiple gunshots at the Birchwood Village Apartments in the 1700 block of East Birch Street, said Sgt. Jim Griffin, a spokesman for the Brea Police Department.
When officers arrived a group of men were involved in a struggle and one man was down with what appeared to be gunshot wounds, Griffin said.
Minh Kinh Dang, 20, of Santa Ana, was later pronounced dead at the scene.
James Yi, 18, of Irvine and Earl Augustus Austin, 19, of Santa Ana were arrested on suspicion of homicide and robbery, Griffin said.
Police had not yet released the name of the third man in custody.
According to police, Dang and the other suspects were allegedly attempting to rob two men from a Los Angeles marijuana dispensary who were at the apartment complex to make a delivery to a supposed buyer, Griffin said.
They allegedly confronted the driver and an armed security guard and a struggle took place, police said.
Dang allegedly pulled out a handgun and the guard fired three shots, striking Dang, Griffin said.
Police interviewed and later released the men from the marijuana dispensary.
The incident remained under investigation.
