1 dead, 3 arrested in robbery attempt on marijuana shop workers

June 23, 2011 | 9:36 am

Three suspects were in custody Thursday in a Brea shooting that left one man dead in a robbery attempt on two Los Angeles marijuana dispensary employees, police said.

Brea police responded to a call at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday about multiple gunshots at the Birchwood Village Apartments in the 1700 block of East Birch Street, said Sgt. Jim Griffin, a spokesman for the Brea Police Department.

When officers arrived a group of men were involved in a struggle and one man was down with what appeared to be gunshot wounds, Griffin said.

Minh Kinh Dang, 20, of Santa Ana, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

James Yi, 18, of Irvine and Earl Augustus Austin, 19, of Santa Ana were arrested on suspicion of homicide and robbery, Griffin said.
Police had not yet released the name of the third man in custody.

According to police, Dang and the other suspects were allegedly attempting to rob two men from a Los Angeles marijuana dispensary who were at the apartment complex to make a delivery to a supposed buyer, Griffin said.

They allegedly confronted the driver and an armed security guard and a struggle took place, police said.

Dang allegedly pulled out a handgun and the guard fired three shots, striking Dang, Griffin said.

Police interviewed and later released the men from the marijuana dispensary.

The incident remained under investigation.

IN all seriousness, it's F'd up that Medical MJ providers have to be escorted by armed security guards.
If it were legal, taxed, regulated and anybody could grow it in their garden for personal consumption, there would not be such a criminal element. As long as we stick to the "I got's mine" and "medical use only" attitude, this cycle of violence will just continue to feed on itself and the general public will continue to be anti-pot

It also takes a great deal of time, money, and skill to grow high quality meds, so it will never be $4 an oz.

I also say good shooting and good riddance to bad rubbish. Fuck thieves of every sort, in lots of countries they would get way worse than jail!

After your recent fiasco with the California courts, I'm surprised you still feel that way. Sorry to disappoint you but it WILL be legal soon. No it won't be as cheap as a bag of veggies, but it will be a hell of a lot more affordable and accessible than it is now. The criminal element will be gone. And all you would've had to deal with was a ticket for that brake light.
You're right, people get robbed all of the time, but they targeted these guys prob because they figured they could get money AND weed. I don't see Pizza guys with armed security guards.

This is the biggest argument that I have about legalization from our side. THE CRIMINAL ELEMENT WILL NEVER BE GONE. Im sorry, it sucks but it is what it is. There will ALWAYS be a criminal element (albeit much less and much different than it is now)

Thousands of 'legal' goods (most of which we give no second thought about) are all over the black market. From foods, to tires to weapons and other legal drugs there is still a black market.

On top of this, as long as there is *some* value of sorts associated with it, there is always going to be someone who is going to want it and want to take it from someone else.

And on the pizza delivery guy comment, work for a pizza joint for an extended period of time and you will actually see how many drivers get held up. That shit goes even more haywire if power is lost in an area.

Dont get me wrong, I want it legal like most everyone here. But thinking that the black market aspect of it, and the inherent danger of having something of value will just dissolve upon legalization, is unrealistic and makes us almost look desperate.

Krunch Ive seen some fine grows from you and some of your post a hilarious. But your support of criminals, gangsters, killers, prisons, broken families the police and feds so that you can continue to make good money is unconscionable. Cannabis will be legal someday with or without your support.

Yes their is a black market for most goods. But you buy black market because the price is cheaper. The black market for cannabis will be because the quality is better. In a legal society most cannabis grown will be outdoors or greenhouses. There will always be a black market for fine herb as it should be. But you wont have gangs killing for it. Is legalizing about good herb or is it about reducing the deaths from gangs and the disintegration of the family because daddy got busted and is going to prison?
