Dream Berry BRIX/ROLS Newb Contest Entry

yep. the large squared netting made with super strong fishing line. then I stapled it to a 1x1x3.5 and wrapped it around it then screwed that to the top of the frame.

really? that shit is strong. FatherEarth has these beds where the bottom is on top of chicken wire so the bottom is breathable. his thread has a lot of good info too about this type of growing.

EDIT: ran out for a looksee and it has stretched leaving a small amount of the bottom down on the floor. ugh! not what I wanted but I'm too exhausted from hauling dirt to fix it so the other side will use plastic coated chicken wire I guess.

yeah, its strong, but its not that strong, not load bearing. Remember each gallon of water is an extra 8 lbs so watering is going to add a lot of weight. 5 gallons will ad another 40lbs!

I just checked out FatherEarth's big soil little room, he built wooden frames with slats that hold the majority of the weight. The weight is dispursed across the slats with the chicken wire, but the chicken wire holds very little of the weight. way different than hanging that much soil hammock-style with netting or chicken fensing. It lookes like all your weight is on the staples? Thats no good!

thought if I wrapped it around the 1x1 a few times and then screwed that down to the frame, it would help hold it than if I stapled it only to the frame. the staple would tear wear they're attached but by wrapping it around I was hoping to even the pressure out over the entire netting. I originally was going to do what FatherEarth did but wanted to be original. haha original usually doesn't work out for me though haha.

Yeah, seems like that originality is getting you into trouble! Learn from that though. If you have time and money to blow, recreate experiments or do your own. If not, stick with what is known to work.

Probably the last thing you want to hear, but have to agree with Nes. Design looks a bit sketchy for a raised bed with suspended bottom.

Mentioning it now because I think it might hold for a while which could actually be worse in the long run. Pressure is a tricky bitch and it just keeps doing it's thing. Would suck to have plants growing and then one day after you water a catastrophic failure dump your bed all over the floor.

Looks like a way cool idea though, I suspect maybe some wooden pallets underneath the bed supporting the fabric bed evenly might be all you need to get by with your current arrangement, but you will still have to dig most of the dirt out to get them in under there.

Good luck, DDs.

it definitely is better to find out now than to find my garden growing on the ground later on. lol I think I will take the soil out and then put the cement blocks underneath. I have a bunch of extra pieces of wood so I can use those underneath the blocks to adjust the height. I will have to buy a bunch and put them under the frame boards too. I wish my dad would've taught me some of this stuff. I usually hire a handy man to do this but this project is a little hush hush.

oh! and while I was at home depot I had them cut my boards that I did end up buying and the little old man waiting in line gave me all these tips like predrilling holes so I don't split those small boards. little old men give me the best advice there cause they always wanna know what I'm building. lol

be sure to keep the wood from getting wet as that can lead to mold , killz paint works great as a mold preventer :tiphat:

DoubleDDsNuggs

is that oil based paint? I used that once to paint my bedroom at my old house and nearly fainted. had to go outside and my head was pounding and I wasn't making any sense when I talked. the ventilation was poor in there. you're right though. I should paint it to protect it. mold will set in quick and that is a no go when doing a scrog. sounds like I got more work to do today. thanks for the tips and good looking out!

Kilz will melt your face. If you do it, do it outside. Inside fumes are way too combustible and you would need to shut off all power.

it's in a double car garage so I plan on opening both of those and there's windows as well. bring in some box fans and cross my fingers. no one told me at the paint store that this would be worse than latex paint. that room even with fans sucked and was built in the 1920's and had a hallway from the bedroom door that you had to walk down that went into the bedroom so the air had to flow down a hall way first, go through the doorway, down another hall and turn a corner before getting into the room.

They sell a Kilz2 that is latex based, but real Kilz is pretty strong stuff.

From their website:

VAPORS MAY CAUSE FLASH FIRE: Vapors can flow along surfaces to a distant ignition source and flash back. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. Do not smoke. Extinguish all flames and pilot lights and turn off stoves, heaters, electric motors and other sources of ignition during use and until all vapors are gone. Prevent build-up of vapors by opening all windows and doors to achieve cross-ventilation. To avoid spontaneous combustion, soak soiled rags and waste immediately after use in a closed, water filled metal container. See clean-up and disposal for more information.

Just be careful.

well I'm alive! I found a pallet down the road for free, picked up some Killz and some white paint and went home to finish but forgot the plastic coated chicken wire. Had to take a smoke break and show off the Dream Berry and how she's doing outside. Shes just top dressed with two tablespoons The Guano Company Super Tea and one tablespoon of the Budswel in the same soil recipe. probably around a 1.5 tall right now and I haven't topped her or anything. she's all natural ;)

Got super hungry after my smoke break! got a little creative with the bacon on my salad.

So got my pallet and put some of the plastic coated chicken wire I have in the previous picture. You were amazed by the bacon pot leaf huh? Didn't even catch it in there...

This was probably the easiest soil move ever.

TADAH!!!

The chicken wire pallet has the wire stapled to the side with the least amount of boards. the side with all the boards is the bottom. This worked really well and the bed bottom is now flatter than it was before. The bed is well over a foot deep because I had to squish the bed in the 4x4 side but still have room for the cement blocks. This little bit has really made the bed much deeper than I had planned. I could grow a huge tree in here if I scrogged it out. Since it's obvious I'm not going to be done on time, and will still be late in flower when voting is taking place, lets have some fun! four plants each bed, scrogged, water only, topped like a bush.

So Dream Berry will be in bloom soon in another room just so you can see how she flowers for the thread. But you can help me pick what's going to go in these two beds:
Pennywise:

TGA Genetics 1:1 ratio THC/CBD averaging 11-12% each. Harlequin x Jack The Ripper. After years of research and testing we have finally developed a hybrid with very high CBD. In over 70% of tested samples the CBD was in the range of 12-15% CBD and equal parts of THC as well. For those patients looking for a High CBD strain with great flavor this is your admission ticket to something special.
Phenotypes: There are 4 main phenotypes. All have virtually the same smell and taste and all buds tend to show some purple. The main difference between phenotypes is in the bud structure and the dominant color; buds are either fingery or round, with pale green or purple as their chief color. The purple buds are particularly impressive.
Height: Short to Medium
Yield: Medium
Recommended for Indoor and Outdoor. This strain is super powdery mildew resistant.
Best way to grow: Topped once, limited stretch on most phenotypes.
Harvest: 60-67
Sat/Ind: 20/80
Hybrid: Harlequin x Jack The Ripper
High Type: Clear head with a slow onset body and an immediate sense of well being. The analgesic and relaxing properties of the CBD rich Harlequin mother come through nicely and the invigorating pep you get from the JTR high makes this an amazing all day smoke for with real medicinal value.
Taste/Aroma: Phenotypes range from a fresh ground coffee/pepper to a lemon bubblegum. The smoke is smooth and full bodied.
Blue Magoo: (grows quite fast IMO)
Blue-Magoo-4-1b.jpg

Blue Magoo’s lineage dates back to the mid 90s, when it was bred by one of the many great growers of Oregon… The mother is a DJ Short Blueberry, which was pollinated by a William’s Wonder F2 (also known as Major League Bud). Blue Magoo is clone only and has often been mistaken/mislabeled as the “Blue Goo”, which is not the same strain.
The Blue Magoo has a tight bud structure, with slightly higher stretch than your typical indica… She grows zigzagging, vine like branches, covered in very dense and resinous buds; which need to be staked up to hold its weight (a trait from the William’s wonder). It’s best grown in organic soil, and fed with organic nutrients.
The smells are very complex and range from berries, fruit, lavender, star anise, rose and incense. Blue Magoo’s flavor tends to lean more towards the berry/fruit side of things, but can be more “florally” when it’s grown with chemicals/synths, and/or not flushed properly. This strain has a desirable medicinal value, which accommodates many ailments ranging from pain, anxiety, nausea, appetite increase and insomnia to name a few….
Blackberry Kush: (some clones are doing okay but she wasn't very happy to begin with)
dscn3084.jpg

This mostly indica strain is a mix of Afghani and Blackberry strains and has beautiful dark purple buds with orange hairs. Plants will flower at 7-8 weeks and are not particularly high yielders, but the dense, hard nugs have crystals throughout. Blackberry Kush tends to have a hashy, jet fuel smell and taste that is balanced by sweet berries. Blackberry Kush is often recommended for the treatment of pain thanks to its strong indica body effects.

LOL. More like "after years of watching other people explore cbd, we got a cut of someone else's work, already high in cbd and tried to add some thc back into it"
Shit talking aside, if you have a keeper pheno of the pennywise, I'd do it or the blue magoo. If you dont have the keeper, do the magoo. BBK is like blue dream in that it has bag appeal but a bit of pedestrian high

DoubleDDsNuggs

heheh BBK is one of my favorites if it's grown right and there is only one place that sells it that tastes good.

I bought some Blue Magoo at the same place the person sold the clones to and I wasn't really impressed at all. it had good sized nugs and looked great but nothing outstanding for taste or smell and the high, I wouldn't know, I smoke too much and it didn't get me where I needed to be and very few actually do. it's a vigorous cut or at least it was in my hydro compared to the GSC and Casey Jones. it would be good for producing for commercial possibly since it just wants to grow, nothing phases it at all; not even that root rot. They bounced back in a like two days where the others are still not doing very well. they had some brown slimy roots before going in the containers. I've never tied any of these that I've bought besides the BBK and the GSC.

I did go pick up a sack from the farmers market on Sundays and got a bag of Purple Snow. I have heard people describe snow falling on their backs but never believed it till now. that shit puts me out like a light so I know it's gonna kill it with other people.
