Well.. I dont know how the market could be that different?
I assure you i am not the only group doing this in my city of 400k, I am just the best! lol

The Ice is not mine or anyone's first choice for over all quality, however she is pushed a bit harder because of the value per watt.

The smell and taste is awesome by most peoples reaction, Bag appeal is off the chain!

In our market all that is a great contributor to the sale but the most important aspect is the high... The Ice is different, this is why it may be doing so well?

In a market we started flooding over 10yrs ago with chem d, 4, bubba etc... im pretty confidant my peeps know whats what.

I have not heard of anyone not liking the smell of the Ice.. it is quite repulsive i know.. but that seems to put it over the top, personally i prefer this smell over say chem d, or even stardawg.
No one else has it, which is a huge bonus when looking at the big picture.

In no way am i having a pissing match with you bro... much respect to you and yours... just shooting the shit, i find it interesting on your take.......

Hi Snype - so then do you think smell trumps appearance in your market? or is it just that appearance is now taken for granted that it has to have show appeal, so that just reduces it to smell - in your market.(??) and then what about taste? would that be a lesser impact variable subordinate to smell and appearance?

Not trying to answer your question for you.. I tend to think about things from different perspectives.. or hold something constant and see what changes in my head. similar to your post above wrt the pheno equation. Its fun to have some things fixed and then have variables that you can hold constant or vary individually (or in groups if you can) and then analyze the result.

I think for the pound players as a whole in my market, looks is everything and then comes potency. You'd be surprised at how many of these players don't even smoke cannabis in any way at all. It's all just business. The problem is that the little consumer all the way down the line wants that quality that I have but they don't have access to it because the people that they are buying from are all about business. So like I said above, if you are about business, you'd rather pay the least amount possible for the product that has good bag appeal. It just comes down to prices. I used to move a lot of pounds from canada and cali and even mexico for almost 20 years so I understand my market pretty well. I've walked around colleges with high grade trees filled in my back pack promoting my wares and handing out small amounts of product for free to spread the word. I meet all the bottom guys and they love the product but when they introduce me to their connections and they see the quality of my product, they like it but it makes no sense for them to pay the prices that I have compared to what they are getting for much cheaper. So in my opinion, in my market, price and bag appeal trump everything else.

Well.. I dont know how the market could be that different?

There's over 4.6 million people in my market. We are a major hub in the USA on the East Coast. Because of this, many folks in CO and CA ship their sub par pounds out to these cities at very low prices. It's not hard to understand what this does to a market. Just look at CA. I've known other people in the past who used to fly to Canada for hundreds of pounds per week for very cheap prices. Other times people would drive from CA and CO to bring back cheap pounds. Now many college kids ship pound right from CA themselves. Pounds are everywhere around here just like I try to tell you. It all has to do with prices around here now.

People in my market are pretty picky when they are paying top dollar for anything. The ICE smell is not the smell that they like. They love the smell of Chemdog and Sour Diesel though. There's also a group that doesn't like Chem and Sour Smells that would rather have fruity smells instead. I've showed ICE to a few people and peoples eyes go back to the StarDawgs. Chemdogs are also known as repulsive smells but they smell great. ICE is very different.

Just imagine thousands of pounds coming to your city for 3k a pound and it has decent bag appeal. If it hasn't happened yet, it will in a matter of time. The big hubs probably come first.

I have friends in my market who move 3-5 pounds a week in small quantities at 60 an eighth of cali outdoor that can pass for indoor. They pay somewhere in between 3k to 35 a p for it. Why on earth would they want to pay me over 1k more to get the same $60 an eighth? The people at the bottom want what I have but they don't have access to it because I'm not a street player anymore. Those guys don't want to pay my prices when they will end up making less money. I don't understand why this is so hard to comprehend.

Shit snype....you northerners have it easy!

Try the CA and CO people shipping their "sub par pounds" for 2400. I think the latest i have seen is "fucking incredible" strain....its gotten A LOT better than the beaster looking shit of a years past. Still shit in my opinion.

My buddy is all worked up over that shit right now. I laugh as johnny law dont f-around down here.....it wont last too long before someone screws up and shuts it down for a little while. People must have brass balls driving\shipping that shit across the entire country to get here (or i have little ones :) ).

Since we are on the topic of prices lets look at the history of my past market. It all started for me at the end of 1991. From 1991 - 1998 it was mostly mexican brick as pictured here (I'm wearing a police jacket that I stole when I broke into a cop car. I had the badge too):
picture.php

Between 1991 and 1998, you could get mexican brick for around $800 a pound. The more you bought the less the price was. Between 1991 and 1994, you could fetch around $150 for an oz. My goal was to have prices lower than everyone else and the benefit was that I was able to move more product. Around 1996 I was able to move o's at $100-$110 all day long. It wasn't only oz's, it was p's, 10's, 1/8's, 1/4's. Whatever anyone wanted. It was easy to profit 1k a day or more at the time. Everyone seemed to have the same type of product but their prices seemed higher.

Around 1998 and 1999 I started to first see the Beasters come around. Prices were around 46 to 48 a pound at that time. The majority of the product still seemed to be mexican but a few people like me who had access to other products like Beasters stood out and were able to stack more clients.

At the end of 1999, I started to take growing more seriously and started to produce more pounds myself. Most of those pounds were Shiva Skunk from Sensi and I was able to easily get 6k a pound. On some occasions I was able to get up to 7500 a pound for top grade at the time. Around 2006 or 2007 is when prices began to drop because quality as a whole started to go up for everyone. Beasters became more frequent and a lot of the mexican brick went to other suburbs further away. Now everyone had Beasters or some type of Cali bud which started to send prices lower. Still wasn't that bad because the indoor hydro could still get 5k a P. Since 2007, it's been more work to try and move product with the great flood that's happening. I've been stressing for the past few years that the end is near for the basement / home grower. It's just a matter of time. Only the top 10% of those type of growers are going to survive. Hopefully you guys left are good at saving before the end. In some markets, the end already happened.

Speaking of mexican brick, look at this quarter pound joint that I rolled for my friends high school graduation in 1996:

We smoked oz's like it was nothing all the time! Like this oz joint that I rolled at another party in 1996:

Now that all my pheno's have been in jars for a little while, I see what I'll be smoking the most of. Illuminati StarDawg is at the top of the list. Everything about her is amazing except maybe her weak branch's. She's potent and has loads of flavor and her smells are unbelievable. It's like a Candy Sour Diesel. She may be the most potent plant that I'm growing.

Illuminati StarDawg sounds great! It beats the BYTCH?!? Nice find Snype.

Your sooo right about the Market on the East Coast. I just seen prices drop from $325 oz
to $268.75 oz when you take eight. $4300 lb for the highest grade.
Beazters used to get that much in the early 90's.
Peeps would way rather buy mexi brick they call "middies" LOLOLOL (Its dirt), for $60oz
when you get an elbow, than get the homegrown headies for $4300.
I have to add a 1000w lamp just to keep up with the drop in prices.
Once the hydro shops opened the priced dropped fast cuz everyones growing there own now and tryin to make a buck too. Alot of newbies popping up and dropping out quicker than shit cuz the game is just to hard for the newb.
Even the seasoned grower is gonna have to make changes to adapt, or be phased out by the overflow of good marijuana on the market.
My friends brother was getting Cali grown White Widow sent to him on the East Coast for dirt cheap. The herb sucked IMHO, but it made him money, and thats what its all about in the end for most people.

I think most thinking people realize that we are living in new uncharted times. As a child of the 60s/70s I still can barely take it in that it is LEGAL in some states recreationally and in more than 20 states medically. Halle'fookin'lulea about time is what I say.

I probably represent a segment of the future market I'm sure. Homegrower for self/family only, just not interested in monetizing something I'm doing for myself. I have a good job that keeps me engaged and challenged. The profit aspect for is just not there but I want the quality as well as the surety of what I'm getting. Also want to be able to strain & pheno hunt for what works for me & family member. You cannot do that when you are on the buying end, only on the grow side will I have the control I want.

Interesting to read the history of what it was like in the 90's when I was not involved in the scene, thanks for the stories and pics!

it seems like the writing is on the wall as far as it becoming legal at some point, and i think you're right to some degree about the demise of the smaller grower,at least those who arent smart and dont plan ahead...me,im lucky enough to live somewhere the sun shines 320 days a year so im planning on greenhouses now while the gettin is still good....taking the power bill out of the picture changes the equation quite a bit...

Ya it does. So doesnt rent. I have been an avid believer in growing as much as you can outside without the power bills and rent that comes with indoor growing.
I have wanted to give up any bills, and camp outside for a season with my guerilla girls, just to get a good financial foundation for once in my life.
As it stands, Im living harvest to harvest with 2-600's just barely making it through till the next harvy. Its not cutting it anymore.

As far as the future goes - I'm of the mind that simple supply / demand economics will take continue to rule as they have so far. Supply will naturally increase as barriers to entry go down (decriminalization/legalization etc..) Kinda question the impact on demand but my firm belief is that there is at least a moderate increase in demand as people enter the market to buy what was once not readily available. So I think there is still lots of pent up demand but who knows how much? Is the demand enough to offset the increase in goods flooding into the market? Or will it be so great as to not move prices downward?

The costs for indoor growing are not going down per se. Maybe yields increasing with technology and production method innovation. Indoor costs will always be a limiting factor as they are relatively fixed. Outdoor greenhouses will proliferate along with small business's seeking to sell services... Will be interesting to watch unfold & develop.

I gotta believe the market has seen the high water mark for prices - but who knows? Pent up demand released may buoy the market for years (?) I'm no econ weenie just my ramblings and musings on Snype's dime.

at least in the near term colo and wash are bringing my local market prices back up since all the low grade beaster crap that floods the market from cali and colo suddenly dried up around here...just the most gawd awful looking machine trimmed crap you ever saw,but only 16 for units....thankfully all that crap is gone now....

Lots of changes are happening at the moment. It doesn't look like me and Snypette are going to work out so we are parting ways. So now I am going to have to juggle 2 farms with a couple of employees who are no where near as motivated as me. That's usually the case. No one has any passion with what's going on. Everyone just wants money. I try to explain that without passion, there will be less money and many more mistakes but most people are all talk. I'm used to it because this is the way it's always been. I've only met 1 other person who deals with plants with the passion that I have and that was my old "mentor". Snypette will be back to take her computer and I will not be buying another one. That means that any day now, I will be off line for good. I'm not really worried about documenting my data anymore because all my data is in my head and I've made enough contributions to ICmag. I'm still going to focus hard on my breeding projects and those will still be available at seedbay in the near future but for me it's time to go back to the underground and stay safely behind the scenes. I wish everyone well with their projects and grows.

The community is taking a big loss with you gone, but you must do what's best for you bro. Huge :respect: for taking the time to share everything you have. The world definitely needs more growers with your kind of passion and drive.

Take care of yourself out there :tiphat:.
