Dave Weckl indeed, saw him in Edinburgh's Calton Studios 20 years ago, doing some Zildjian promo. Versatile. Them drummers have to be, with their reputation as "mercenaries".
Also Omar Hakim, that guy's an octopus.
Carlos Acuña, used to play with the Average White Band, among others, drums being an extension of his body.

kaochiu, finally someone I agree with! I saw Omar with Weather Report one time, and Alex Acuna another, very important to my education. Sorry, but IMHO, technique wise anyway, John Bonham and Carl Palmer ain't nothing but over rated. My faves you might not know; Simon Phillips, and Thomas Lang. come back when you can do that!

Mitch Mitchell deserves more than honorable mention. In fact, he's at the TOP of MY list!

I saw Peart up close during the Moving Pictures tour and he was amazing. Dude was busting sticks left and right during his solo and there was a guy standing next to him with a box of sticks. Peart would break a stick and the guy would slap another in his hand. Blew me away watching.

I've always had an affinity for Phil Rudd of AC/DC. His timing and rock solid rhythm has always appealed to me.

Keith Moon is a crap drummer and looses time constantly. In fact some would say he's shit!!!

The best technical drummer which is classical drumming > The master of Paradiddles Etc is Buddy Rich. Nobody even comes close to this guy's expertise. I however prefer the FUNK groove of Bernard Purdie.

Bernard is the most recorded session musician ever, these drummers I mention are the only ones in the top 3 from, expertise, ability and most wanted on record.

Bernard Purdie -AKA- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FX_84iWPLU Mr - I need some air in my Hi hat! Mr 16 beat shuffle.

The Jimmy Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell was awesome. (bear in mind he had to try and drum along to Jimmy and jimmy would stop playing and listen to Mitchell. Mitch was a sincapated rock and roll drum master. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKgd7BlYhBM
