been an interesting summer around here, certainly learned a lot about growing veggies in this area,my approach will be much different next year...for one thing i have found the local sources for compost and aged manure and the like no more or very few bagged things will be used aside from continuing to recycle rootballs into the beds and whatever leftovers i still have will be left to do its thing over the winter, already laid in a foot of compost and i will mulch that with a combo of grass clippings and bark mulch, that should keep it all in place over the winter and spring winds...and next year there will be a working hose bib in the garden...

the front yard however has far exceeded my expectations, and any sort of reasonable budget...i long ago lost track of how many plants have gone in..hundreds probably...and tons and tons of rock....tons and tons....and lord only knows how many miles of bermuda grass rhizomes i have pulled out and the hours of weed pulling....and tediously hand watering up to 100 gallons a day with a 2 gallon watering can...

all worth for the near continuous display of flowers, and the constant presence of hummingbirds and butterflies and bumblebees and lizards and such...:tumbleweed:

have i ever mentioned the cactus collection?:) seems like i would have....
although at this point i sometimes think of it as my pottery collection that im storing some cactus in...probably half the pots cost more than the cactus itself, occasionally its wildly out of balance in both directions....a 4 dollar cactus in 30 dollar pot...or like the totem pole, which over the summer has grown massively,at least for a cactus...judging by what i have seen on ebay and the few places that sell totem pole cactus just the offsets alone are worth north of 500 dollars....gonna be a bitch to move it in for the winter...not to mention the rest of the collection...

im assuming san pedro?
sheesh,to mar a nice cactus like that! i have several cactus that are hallucinogens but i wouldnt think to go cutting them up...and the taste is so god awful,so bitter...much rather take shrooms...so much easier on the body and mind...

Someone brought them over and set them on a tower in the Mancave. Said they were seed pods or something. Yep San Pedros. Ive never eaten them. I hear they are bitter, but I also heard that running them through a juicer you could make something without the pulp that was less bitter. I have a stainless juicer, havnt tried it though. Havnt eaten any of that stuff for a long time.

I already have a tall San Pedro out in the green house. It needs a transplant real bad. Its healthy tho

well, the inside is still full of crappy furniture if that makes you feel better, the kitchen is reasonably well stocked and i do have nice cookware....the garden is nice though, and it is chock full of gay little flowers...but not really prissy enough to be gay, pretty much everything is wild native plants, and they do get unruly...naw,it says something more like stoner with disposable income...

not much happening in the gardens, prepping the veggie beds for next year.expanded some, got one of the main beds all turned over with a layer of compost from the city...pretty chunky with sticks but some good stuff...the soil is starting to look good...need to turn the main bed next...the main compost pile is starting to turn out some compost...local wisdom is saying expect it to take 2 years for a pile to break down, already starting another,a chipper shredder is in my future for sure...the barrel composter is doing much better, some nice stuff ready to be screened out...
still have the squash going in the 100 gallon smart pot,and some carrots and beets here and there...aphids just destroyed tons of stuff,a couple of cold nights and they are gone for the most part, squash are really kicking into gear now..

been out exploring the desert on mountain bike, really enjoying knowing everything,or at least lots of the plants names now...lived here for years calling them "another frickin cactus" or "some type of yucca thingy"

I can imagine an alien world where the spines, like on the horse crippler, detach themselves and attack.

I envy that you still have color in your gardens. Mine are all but bare - except for a few petunias, rudbeckias, marigols and mums. And those are few and far between.

How about the fruits of your veggie garden?

I wanted to mention the quartz and fools gold. Done. :D

im surprised how much is still blooming since i stopped watering aside from very occasionally...i still have blooming trumpet vines and morning glories,4 different sage bushes, agistache, desert marigold, livingston daisies, several penstemons, blanket flowers, chocolate daisies, lantanas, rock verbenas, rain lillies.....needless to say, lots of color still....

the veggie garden was basically a buffet for insects this year....did ok for my first year, but it will be better next year....learned a lot about it this summer....
