been a while since i updated here...the bulk of the veggie garden has been harvested and pulled, the tomato plants would have kept cranking out fruit for a while but they had totally taken over the garden and were falling all over themselves as well as choking the light from everything else...

needless to say,i have a lot of learning left to do,but also learned a lot this year.perhaps most important is i can find many things here locally,as in locally produced...worm castings, compost, aged manure, ground pecan shells, the waste from the chili processing plants and several other things like alfalfa.finally joined the local coop as well as they have their own farm and give lessons on composting, crop planning, biologic control of pest...local garden wisdom in general...

working the beds with the last of the bagged stuff i had bought, have a 100 gallon smart pot with squash, broccoli, beets and carrots planted and sprouting, still have tomatillos, thai peppers, cantaloupe and red potatoes in the ground doing well, the mesculin mix is getting bigger and theres a nice little row of italian red and tokyo green scallions coming in along with chives and walla walla sweet onions...

some new mexico joe parker green chili and the last tomatoes grillin up!

they are the finest in the world for this type of chili, just cant beat a chimayo red or hatch green or mesilla valley green....next summer that whole bed will be nothing but chili....

I love squash, I've always thought it would be cool to grow one of them giant pumpkins.

That bowl of grilled peppers looks delicious man. Your photos almost make me want to live in the southwest. Almost. I do like a little rain now and then

a few shots from the garden, still getting waves of blossoms here, many of the native grasses are setting seed heads, been able to cut back quite a bit on watering as well.
harvested a cantaloupe the other day,all thats left in the garden are tomatillos and thai chilis, one broccoli plant that survived and is finally making heads, probably going to let it all wind down and get the beds prepared for next year, planted a bunch of stuff in a 100 gallon smart pot for fall harvest, the lettuce and scallions are doing well in their bed, will grab some shots of those later..

and a couple of potted opuntias to round things out, both of these are "monstrous" versions so there growth is distorted from the normal cactus form, had better luck with these than with the "cristate" or crested mutations, think i only have one left of the crest...

at this point the main veggie beds have all been either harvested or straight up pulled, the bugs finally got me down this year, you won insects...had aphids and ants and caterpillars and cut leaf beetles and now whiteflies...still,pretty happy all in all for my first ever garden...going to be a much different strategy next year...learned a bunch this year, getting a truckload of compost delivered so i will re-amend the beds and let them sit till next spring and add a bit more bed space along the fence...

all thats going now is a row of lettuce and some scallions and the cheat garden in the smartpot, which is doing really well...think next year the tomatoes will go in smart pots, say a 45 gallon size and be put out front in the south exposure..

found a wood end table someone had left out for large trash day...drilled out the top and added a gravel bed to set cactus pots in,got the main table/shelf painted and will be doing the same to it....will frame the table out here soon and turn it into a mini coldframe/greenhouse to overwinter part of the cactus collection in...

like many old men and ladies they are wooly on the outside but still very prickly in the inside...some of those have cactus out for blood spines..they will happily got through 2 pairs of leather gloves...and that horse crippler will go through a leather boot!
