Afropips Malawi Gold alive and strong!

As with many famous strains grown across a region, the strain can vary from village to village. Different Malawi landrace types will finish at different times to one another and different latitudes will also produce different results within the same version of the strain....
Afropips version finishes around late May at around 28 degrees South but I've seen some go through well into June when the weather permitted.
Ace Seeds have a version that finishes around late April to early May here.
African Seeds used to have a version that ran a tad later than ACE's version but they're now defunct, unfortunately.
Generally, she tends to be a fairly late finisher, however, I can't speak for Bodhi Seeds version.

Thanks for the info. Holy smokes version is probably the most pure version as the flowering times go as far as 19 weeks some say. Bodhi's descriptions say originally from african seeds for the ethiopian and malawi.

Just in case people don't remember Afropips Seeds, this was a seed company that
specialized in collecting and preserving the pure landrace seeds that still exist in
different regions of the African continent.
I wish I could remember all of the different strains, but there was Malawi Gold,
Zambian Copper, Ethiopian Highland, Zamal, Congolese, Nigerian, and a few others.
Does anyone have an old Afropips catalogue that describes the strains? Maybe
that data is still stored here in honor of the Afropips history and legacy? I'll take
a look in the archives and see what I can find.

I've seen so far Malawi, Nigerian, Ethiopian and Zambian from Afropips alive and well around the community. I don't think they used to carry Zamal, as far as I know. There is some info on seed finder database, listing all the strains they used to sell.

The Secret Garden Experimental Station set off on a new course this year and the remaining M99 seeds are in refrigerated stasis. I received another amazing gift from a new friend, Magus Genetics' (Gerrit) original 2008 Masibindi (Warlock x Zamal A), and the focus is on crossing that strain with a few others on hand.
Zamal, like Malawi, is a tropical Sativa treat known for its psychedelic, uplifting, high. Though it's not a couchlock weapon like a strong Indica or a heavy Colombian, it can paralyze the smoker through sheer, energetic bandwith.Getting high and motivated is one thing, but take it a bit further and it's like you're putting out 100 amps at 12 volts. Deadly because it can fry anything it touches unless there is proper grounding and an adequate copper gauge for carrying that energy.
But I digress....the M99 is headed for a marriage with the Sativa-leaning side of Masibindi. The only seed of 5 Masibindi that popped this season was that much needed male indeed: skinny leaves, as bushy as any weed plant I've ever seen, prolific bud sites all over the branches, and a stank scent that smells like earthy carrot. This is the classic Zamal A that Gerrit used in his original cross with his award-winning Afghani Indica he named Warlock. The Zamal carrot pheno is the trippy one, too.
My thought is to cross the Malawi and the Zamal, two intense tropical Sativas. My path is slow, year-by-year, because I grow only organically outdoors. Perhaps this winter I'll experiment with clones and indoor crosses, even if only on a closet scale. I could definitely use the closet for breeding and refining. There's so much to learn....
I've saved a bit of Masibindi pollen and have also crossed it this last week with Gerrit's Magus Genetics 2005 Warlock x (Warlock x Zamal B), as well as the earliest flowering Critical Mass F2 from a bunch of another friend's seeds, and plan to wed that pollen with a Cabeza de Negro (Black Head) girl from the now defunct Brazilian Seeds company that was run by Luiz Fritzman as soon as she has more flowers. These Brazilian sativas are the last of all of my girls to flower and will definitely be seeing November in the garden before they're done.
I hope you're on the way to something rewarding yourself. Indoor or outdoor, beginning the art or old timer?

Well at least you have the M99's at your disposal-- The Zamal sounds downright dangerous...In a good way. I learned this- that you can always take one hit at a time and end up where you want to be, but you can't un-take a toke once you've gone past the point of no return. I'm sure your cross will be stellar- giving you the best of everything- c99 bringing down the Malawi flower a bit and warlock giving the zamal some bud density, lower flower times and maybe tempering a bit of the edge. I've always thought Magus' genetics sounded interesting - the smaller companies putting more love into what they are doing (maybe I'm being to romantic about it, maybe not) I think they have been slept on by some of the community but I keep hearing good things.
I was just reading about the BSC genes today - too bad he shut it down his highland Oaxaca and Columbian gold looked amazing. I'd say I'm intermediate - done quite a few shows over the last 12 years, but my living situation right now doesn't allow for it. I, like you, really enjoy outdoor organic, and I'm just dreaming of the day when I can have a big back yard that looks (even remotely) like Kanga's...
I'd love to have a 'Jurassic park' of landrace sativas and do years of selection- a guy can dream right? Until then I'm living vicariously and getting ideas for what I'll start with

im so glad ace released a practical version for us growers past 35lat. I might make a malawi gold x ace malawi.
got a few "seeds of africa" malawi seedlings going now and ^ this (billyblog's pic.) is what they look like. i also got in their swazi gold, zamal reunion, mozambique, durban magic and transkei. the zamal seeds look like a hybrid; too big compared to the tiny zamalish seeds i selfed out of my zamal dom zamaldelica pheno. i haven't got room to run the zamal seeds yet.
on ace's gt and malawi, the meao thai looks to be pretty recessive in the gt's. i've grown out one pack of destroyer looking for a red haired mex. pheno and the mt looked to be very recessive in this pack ( destroyer is genetically 1/2 mt) but i did find one nice pheno that looks like mex. dominate from what i can tell. the best of ace's malawi is what dubi calls the "killer mom" that is a frosty girl. i've been talking with one experienced grower that says his frosty malawi clone is the frostiest plant he has ever experienced. dubi says this pheno is incredible in testing for cannabanoid/thc/thcv levels. my 2011 gt was awesome and i suspect it was a good balance between the killer mum malawi pheno with strong mt influence. my 2012 gt was almost totally malawi dom and very narcotic in effects. the zamalish pheno out of zamaldelica looks to be pretty dominate in crosses i've made.
Has anybody tried growing these yet?
I just took my pack out of the fridge to germ some. I took a closer look and noticed 4 out of my 11 seeds were greenish.
I tried germing 2 of the green ones to no avail. Just wondering if anyone else got greenish seeds and if they germed before I try to start my other 2 green ones.
I might just cut to the chase and start some brown ones.
If anyone has grown these out, how'd they do? how long did theytake to flower for indoors?
