Filters in Joints/Blunts

Does anybody do this? One thing I hear about cannabis is that is has 4x the tar of cigarette smoke. Is that solely just because they have filters? Does anybody use filters when they smoke and would it filter out any of the thc?

When smoking in groups, especially with inexperienced or drunk stoners, I like to roll in a cardboard type filter.

I just cut up a 3.5 card into a 1 inch strip, roll up(sometimes with some small folds on the inside of the spiral), and push the tightly rolled filters into the end of the blunt (where I've used a smaller space saver type filter) and go. These mainly help with keeping the end of the blunt from getting wet from people blowjobbing it, helps with airflow, and reduces the blunt roach size.

This doesn't do anything to filter the smoke, other than ending up with some tar stuck on it, and probably actually allows more tar through.

I haven't used cig filters in joints or blunts. Tried emptying out a cig before, but ended up poking holes through the filter cause i couldn't seem to get good pulls/get high off it with the filter.

I'll agree with everything above except for the filtering affect of that little rolled up paper. I do the same with a tightly rolled paper and sometimes when I take it out afterwards it looks all yellow and nasty and then I imagine all that stuff in my lungs, and then I imagine all the stuff that's actually getting into my lungs anyway and I stop imagining :) But that little filter sure does make the joint easier to work with and looks a lot cleaner too.

Pretty much everyone in Britain, if not to say Europe will make a cardboard "filter" for thier joints, and we call it a roach. It doesn't really filter anything though, its more to stop waste of ganja and tobacco. I dont like filters very much, i think they make joints harder to draw on, and less biodegradable. :)

I was under the impression that it was the tobacco that gives you "black lung" rather than the cannabis. Correct me if im wrong please.

Weed is an expectorant, the same thing in some cough-syrups that help eliminate excess phloem. It dilates air passages in the lungs. You'll get tar but you'll also cough away much more of that tar than from smoking tobacco.

My pops smoked filter-less cigs until his heart attack. The doctor admitted that although pops has emphysema, his lungs aren't as damaged as tobacco and filters together. The doc explained that tobacco filter-material also enters the lungs and causes them to bleed. He compared inhaled filter-material to tiny glass particles.

If you smoke a ton of joints, consider ditching filters. Especially if they're glorified tobacco filters.

I never smoke a joint without a cardboard filter. I forgot who makes the ones I use. I order them in bulk from online head shops. It just makes for a better joint IMO. Newbie tokers always get a kick out the filter.

I smoke blunts without them, but I hardly ever roll blunts.

+1 Been using "roaches" as you European folks call them in my joints (and blunts) for about 6 or 7 years now...thanks to some friends across the pond on Overgrow who convinced me years ago...lol

Always funny to twist one up with a roach in there, as the older stoners I smoke with (say, 40-50+) always say it brings them back, and the younger guys (25-40) always seem to have their mind blown by such a simple little piece of cardboard

there really ain't a debate, a roach makes for a better joint period...blunts can be argued, but if done correctly it really makes everything smoke better...just remember to use the smallest piece of cardboard possible, otherwise you run into the same issues with resin/clogged papers or blunts that you were trying to avoid.

I don't use filters at all in joints.

If I roll tobacco up with my cannabis, I use the filter that came on the cigarette I used.

I just tried using cardboard and noticed much resin collecting on it. I'd say any filter filters and Martha would say it's a good thing :D

@ Ramsius and Kush Master, do you notice any notable differences in those carbon filters?

I always rip off a part of the paper package's cardboard and fold it up like an accordian. I remember the first joint I ever had rolled like that when I hit college. Thought it was the most brilliant thing ever and it hit so much better. Been doing it ever since. Kind of want to buy one of those packs of pre-made filters from an online headshop and give em a go so the tips won't look all wonky like they do when I rip 'em.

in a pinch, the very inside tab of the top part of a cigarette box will do, and it's a lot more uniform and easier to rip than trying to take a strip from a larger piece of cardboard :tiphat:

One of our fine members has an animated gif of Thor in his sig. Thor grinds some bug, rolls a joint and tamps a cardboard filter with his Hammer. Thor puffs and flies through the air. Then he ferks a chicken.

I forget the wrap brand, I think they've got cardboard strips in the pack. Pretty handy.

Roaches make for classy joints, much better for sharing as they are easier to hold and extinguish. If you want to filter tars look in to water bongs and vaporizors for less contaminants when you smoke. They've got some pretty crazy bongs these days like triple percolator with and ash catcher, double bubbler or what ever. All sorts of shit for the health conscious toker.

I remember the three-stage US Bongs with all the tubes. Glass bong enthusiasts might cringe at the thought of acrylic but filtering was exceptional. In the seventies, the bad ass US bongs cost ~$75. That was a bit astronomical back then.
