Here It Comes... GMO Cannabis!

I was wondering if there is evidence of roundup resistant feral hemp, since more weeds are becoming resistant to this herbicide??

Keep on growing :)

Yay an interesting thread! Having flicked through the posts I wouldn't mind adding a few things.

So with all the scaremongering about GM pollen and produce being detrimental to our health, sure they are! But you need to understand that the biochemistry of the planet has been fundamentally changed since the 1950's. Every part of the food chain and hyrdological cycle has been infiltrated with synthetic compounds or other previously sequestered molecules. A few sources:

http://www.pnas.org/content/104/21/8897.full.pdf+html - Collapse of a fish population after exposure to a synthetic estrogen, Kidd et al.

http://oem.bmj.com/content/47/1/29.full.pdf+html - Neurotoxic effects of styrene: further evidence, Cherry and Gatrin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D41rO7mL6zM - Garbage Island, a Vice documentary (I know, not the best source however they tag along with environmental scientists who do know their stuff).

Frankly, GM crops are the least of your/our concerns. The picture may be ugly right now however one can only hope that in the future we actually start exploiting this technology to make good on the promises that it holds because I assure you, it's going to become a lot more common.

I had a few questions anyway; does anyone know if any work has been done in identifying the pathways involved in cannabinoid synthesis in the cannabis plant? I imagine once the pathway has been fully described we might start to see plants with higher concentrations of CBNs and CBDs or some of the other trace chemicals.

the pathway has been identified, there is some work being done on transfering the neccessery genes needed into e.coli, they feed the coli with a thc percussor and the bacteria mimic the plants thc production... basicly the problem at the moment is that the precussor needed for feeding the bacteria is pretty expensive -> it's being tried to find another viable synthesis pathway with using the precussors precussor, etc... the idea behind it is to produce marinol/dronabinol without decarbing hemp oil, and removing the variables involved in the manufacture via gmo e. coli ...

ps.: i hope if one day gmo canna is produced and grown, i hope it will be used for edibale vaccines (via hemp seed), or other meaningful applications, terminator genes could be used to prevent the gmo seed vaccines to be grown and outcross, ...

Hello all,

Not to worry...GMO will only matter in a corperate situation. Backyard growers will still have the killer genetics to be sure.

I mean there are GMO tomatoes, yet you can get heirloom seeds right?

minds_I

Trust me, When the corporations like Monsanto start writing those checks to everyone in the triangle, they will have the killer genetics. I know everyone thinks that they are so morally superior, but I PROMISE YOU, when the Monsanto/ConAgra suits show up at some doors (I bet a few on this forum) with an 8 figure check and stock options for all your clones and genetics they will sell it no questions asked. If Monsanto offers 10 million for the original ECSD clone/mother I guarantee they will have it.

If I may express my opinion, we have been smoking genetically modified cannabis for decades now. Everyone has heard of treating seeds with colchicine to create new mutations in cannabis. It was really popular in the 80s.

I see a lot of people treating cannabis with giberelic acid. Doesnt this make it genetically modified?

nope, since there is no foreign species gene spliced into their genome, the colchine treatment you speak of leads to polyploidity, chromosome doubling/trippeling/..., which means only already existing genes get reshuffled in a way which would rather not occur that easily in nature... giberallic acid on the other hand is a pgr and only triggers certain genes to exprimate which would not occur naturally that easy as well...

the monsanto thing who knows, perhaps they created ecsd and cookies??? rofl

cloning for these said farmers

cloning for these said farmers

why doesnt the said farmer that has to buy these plants from montasato or whatever, just keep some mom plants and clone them????

would they then be sued? its sad that there is no other sources of plants that they could use.

is there no other genetics of those species?

I'm sure a clever corporation could figure out a way to license plants that legally prohibits cloning. I think it would be pointless. People can overgrow the govt, they can overgrow the corporation.

Yea, but if corporations ever get involved they will be teamed up with government. I still say overgrow the world, but that is a formidable opponent.

even if that happens, folks will still be growing their by then "heirloom preservations n pollenchucks", same as with other crops, just because there are transgenic lines being cultivated, it does not mean folks concerned keep reproducing and spreading their heirlooms etc.

actually as with most technical advances driven by the financial world and not the scientifical/socio/ethical types, only the negative effects of the implementation occuring at high levels, will allow mankind as a whole to get involved and change/restrict/... it's use

for example, if there was not so much media coverage about the bt lines and glyphosphat tollerant lines, perhaps many corn/cotton/... growers worldwide, would have never bothered to even think about preserving their own local lines, etc.

obviously it takes time and heavy responses from our environment to actually identify unintended harm done by "kids hacking into mother nature on all levels"...

ps.: i think this freaking skunkweed is slowly making me go loco, shit must be genetically modified ;)

purple_man, thats a lovely post and i do agree. their is so many strains that are lovely and very old too boot. seems as long as you dont go sprouting any of the random outdoor seeds one might find in their crop, you should be fine, as this cross pollination is the key to the end. lol

Sam I have searched and searched and found no proof. So let me put it to you like this:
"Absence of proof is NOT proof of absence" lol. If your not finding so-called scientist in this company I would say ,I wouldn't want to put my name to this fucking mess either . I have not smoked any RKS for over 15 years does this mean it's not there? Sam how hard would it be to GM cannabis? Why would you do this? How?... stay safe headband 707:biggrin:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/14571756/The-Biotechnology-of-Cannabis-Sativa

Headband 707,
After all your posts on GM Cannabis I am still waiting for the list of GM varieties, where grown, and grown by whom?

You still have not listed a single one!

I myself have never done GM work of any kind I do not believe in GM crops. I have nothing against using GM studies to understand the Cannabis genome better and then use Classical breeding methods to accomplish your goals.
I understand why people want to believe that the sky is falling, but do not like it when I ask them where are the pieces that fell?
The sky is not falling, there is no GM Cannabis, regardless how many "articles" you repost that are not scientific or peer reviewed, they are just people shouting their fears.
If you look at the authors of the articles on GM Cannabis none are serious scientists, why is that?

I'm just waiting for when the day comes that after the Feds kick your door in and arrest you for some medicinal plants, that a Monsanto lawyer then shows up and hands you some outrageous bill for the patented genes they found in your plants. I laugh at the idea now, but the sad thing is that it wouldn't be the first time something ludicrous I joked about then came to pass.

by the way, there is a protocoll for agrobacterium mediated transformation of cannabis sativa l. in the agrobacterium protocols volume 2 for those interested... the problem was, the had no functioning organo/embryo-genesis protocol for cannabis callus -> couldnt regenerate the modified callus into whole plants... did a quick search and found paper published 2013 where a fitting regeneration protocol has been established -> the tools are availible ....

Ive been told recently that clone only pink kush is gmo. As well as chemdawg og, ubc chemo, master kush, g13...ect... Scary shit for sure....

I’m certain Monsanto and other seed corps are partnered with or outright own large grow facilities for marijuana production. So of course they have people playing with ways to make it possible to identify traits they can patient and control ‘their’ product which makes it impossible not to imagine that they could do this and pass ‘their’ genes into peoples gardens. But goddamn it, I hope this hasn’t happened!
I really hope it’s sensationalistic talk that any strains are gmo. I’d have to read It from a qualified source to believe that any available clone or seed contained gmo.
