3x3 LED SoG, a perpetual thread.

I would go 20/4 on the light schedule.
I have tried 12/12 and it was no good...
Other runs were done on 18/6 and they improved a lot.
One done on 20/4 was the best producer in terms of yield and potency.

Cool thread so far and thanks for all the pictures. It looks like you've got things down quite well. What is the name of the manufacturer of your LED light?

Thanks dude, I am just starting to delve into organic soil mixes. I hope to amend my own soil in the next month or so and be able to do water only/tea. The biocanna vega isn't my favorite product so far. The flores works great.

Nice, LED's are really coming on. Plants are liking it. Good idea to use a couple of plants to find the right height for the light, before they really take off.

Like the sound of 3watt LED power being used. So I have the same question. Who makes these fixtures ?

Yea, last time I put the LED on my plants they freaked out. The 3 watt LEDs are no joke. It was partly my fault, the plants were under watered and under fed... then light stressed. Bad recipe.

I think smaller clusters of 5 watt LEDs with 120 lenses on them, then spread out like 9-12" on center.....might make a more efficient watt/sqf. Similar to the Mr. X EVO's.... that is the best design I have seen. Any type of 'panel' like I am using creates hot spots where the light is literally too intense to get within a certain distance of the tops in the center of the panel... and the foot print is sub par. If we spread the clusters out better, and upgraded to a more diffuse lay out (5 watter with 120s)... you could achieve a much more evenly spread light foot print. If everything receives 1000-1300 PAR instead of the middle getting 1800 and the outside gettting 500-800... it would be better. Again, IMO

how'd i miss this thread

is that an HGL array?

Thanks for stopping in dude. It's an Evergrow panel from China. Nova T9... with my tailored spectrum on the first page.

Unfortunately I am only running the widow auto, the rest are normal photo-period plants. I only germinated one auto seed, saving the others. The plan is to buy 3 packs, pop one to test it out and run it 12/12 in the perpetual tent... and save the other two.

Eventually I will have enough for a full auto run..and I will already be familiar with the nutrient profiles, and stretch.

Don't worry I fixed her, thats the OG Kush.

You can see these are not perfect, but holding up well.

picture.php

The LED unit is 31" inches away from the tops ish... you can see they are lighter in color than I would like.

The two above were the furthest ahead at the time... now the veg tent has surpassed them

picture.php

Everything is exactly the same except the light, and light period, they are under.

So those 3 will go in soon, then I have 2 more behind them (recovering). One is a recent transplant into 1 gallon, the other root some root damage when my cat pulled it out of the pot(top right in above photo). Then there are another 4 in solo cups flourishing...and time to take more!

Moved the light down again tonight

Moved the light down again tonight

I think this new position may be limiting my foot print, but I just wanted to see how they react. I will have to raise it when the outer plants get taller.

I couldn't find my tape measure but it's around somewhere. It was at 40" fixed before.

Here is how they look before the lowering:

picture.php

The middle plant has only been in for 2 days. The right most plant has stretchy side branches compared to the plant directly under the light.

Here is the top of the plant which is centered under the light, it is to the left.

I will post updated shots in a few days if anything funky happens. I am giving the next plant one extra week of veg, and again for the one after that. See where the sweet spot is for this 1 gallon sog.

Awesome, the more the merrier!

The 2 first plants in the flowering tent have switched over to bud production, I didn't take pictures last night, watching hockey. I added 2 more, there are a total of 5 plants in the flowering tent, and all around the same height. The earliest ones have exhibited a tiny bit of stretch, but clearly the bud sites are coming in.The newest ones I am a lot happier with, they are already as tall as the other plants and much bushier. I think they will fill the space out better after the stretch. I knew the first few were too early, now I just proved it to myself. haha

So in lieu of having flowering pics (nothing to see yet really, just 5 healthy plants) I checked the last batch of biocanna tea wit my microscope;

I had to butcher the quality to get it to upload, here is one of the images I used to make the gif

I think that is a naked amoeba! I was having trouble with the flat slides, and the stage height for the higher level objectives... so I only got to 40x objective with the amoeba, and just snagged a video or two. I need some well slides, it will be easier to focus and leave room for the longer objectives...and I should get better results overall too. I need some protoslow, there were tons of protozoa flying around.

I dried the slide over night and went back to it with the 100x immersion

The light has been about 21 inches above the tops for several days.

It takes the plants about a week or so to adjust, then the color is fine. I will likely have to move it up once I have more plants around the edges. Glad to see the plants stretching though, last time they were too busy recovering.

You can see one of the latest additions is still adjusting. I left her alone for now, I trimmed some fans off of the others to ensure each bud site was getting hit with light. That is likely the size I want to start flowering them at, maybe even a tad larger. The previous 3 were too small, but it was good to get the light down low.

Won't be adding more for at least another week if not longer. Hopefully the WW auto will want to go in too I don't have a space to give her 20/4 or what ever.

So, it would seem that the higher up on the plant you go; the higher the brix reading can be.

All plants I tested gave the same results, once I caught on to the trend. I was really worried at first, when the lower leaves were giving me 7's and 8's.

I hope to see some differences soon between the veg and flowering plants, some of the flowering ones were switched over to biocanna flores tonight. (below)

Looking pretty healthy.

These will be the runts, I put them in too early for testing.

interesting.... could you explain a little more about brix readings and what they mean to you? what action would you take based on a given reading and so forth?

(did a quick google and it looked like it was a measure of sugar in liquid, a weight measurement in the end. )

Heya babel, I recently was put onto brix readings and scooped up an inexpensive refractometer.

did a quick google and it looked like it was a measure of sugar in liquid, a weight measurement in the end.
That is exactly what it is, and it is tied to the metabolism of the plant but also the growing environment and food source. Farmers use it as a general indication of crops, and fruit growers use it for sugar content. Cheap hydroponic tomatoes would have a brix of 2 while expensive soil grown organic tomatoes could have a brix beyond 8-10 range. The best tasting grapes are said to have a brix of 22. When you find something with lower than expected readings, often attributed to the plants stress response or immune system.

could you explain a little more about brix readings and what they mean to you? what action would you take based on a given reading and so forth?
At a given co2 level, for me room/ambient, I believe each strain has a maximum brix level they can achieve. I am trying to see where that is, and how I can affect it. More specifically what soil amendments and water additives I can use to increase it, if possible. I recently switched those two plants shown over to a flowering mix, from the veg mix, and in the past the plants have responded very well. I am interested if that will be reflected in the brix reading.

The plants under the LED and CFL gave the same readings thus far, so maybe there is nothing I can do to make it go higher as one would think a 4-5x increase in photons would yield a higher metabolic response... but it might tell me when I mess something up. Or maybe it is more closely related to the food source.

Right now what I am doing is very simple, happy frog and sunshine #4. Bubbling biocanna with some added mycogrow. I plan on amending the soil and apply the biocanna less frequently. I want to track the brix through this process also, as the point is to build recyclable soil.

I hope that explains my thought process anyway...

yeah that makes sense for sure!! thanks for taking the time to break it down. so i suppose strains would have different max brix levels, but a higher brix should produce better tasting flowers? count me in.

What sort of investment for a decent brix meter?

The refractometers with the brix scale in them are like 30-40 range on amazon. There are other purposes and scales, home brewers use them for sugar and alcohol, wine makers use them, aquarium keepers also.

I don't know if higher brix relates to terpenoid profiles or not, so the taste of the buds... who knows? I would like to think a happier and healthier plant would produce a more intense flavor profile (if possible) compared to a less healthy one. Coming from hydroponics to soil(ish) mediums, I can say for certain the buds taste better soil grown...I did not have this brix meter to test the hydro plants.

It's more about plant health than anything, and trying to track the changes I make to this baseline medium recipe.

Day 23 for these first two

More what I am going for I think:

picture.php

Heat wave dropped my basement temps because of the AC, and I over watered a tad... nothing too horrible though... cruising along.

Auto is freakishly small, only been 2-3 days in the flowering tent but the other seedings are way ahead. Probably just a runt, my buddy ran some of these and they got decent size.

Uhm uhm.... o yea clones rooting.... what else.

Soil amendments are here...

15 gallons sunshine advanced mix #4
5 gallons fox farms happy frog

5 gallons chunky verm

1 quart alfalfa
1 quart kelp
1 quart soft rock phosphate
1 quart greensand

1 cup azomite
1 cup oyster shell and coral mix
1 cup lime
1 cup unsweetened coconut
1 cup flax meal

Amended with mycogrow
Then cook it for 30 days or more. Any suggestions on the mix before I get this going?
