Hey arm you planning on running muffin fans under your bulbs?

Either way promise you me you will at least TRY a top umbrella style reflector that hangs right above the bulb. You will be AMAZED at how much light you are losing up there. Back when I used to run only vert I did some side by sides and noticed upwards of 20% increase in yield. No shit...

I think I could dig up a few pics if you wish. They are super simple and cheap to build so no excuses!

I have orbital oscillating fans mixing up the air. From what I have seen its either or, and I prefer air circulation. My closet has 8" fans under each stack, but I haven't found a cheap one I like. I know I could find something if I looked hard enough, but the 16" orbital fans are only $25 a piece, and two per room is enough vs 4 at $35+...
I will post my light meter findings tonight, which may support the additional reflector/light at the top.

I have wondered about this, but nobody else ever seems to do it.

If walls and ceilings are covered in reflectix/orca/prodex there`s no lumenloss "above" but rather everything getting bounced up , down , and all around the plants FTW......but......

Many ways ta skin a mule....Clean setup Arm.....Everything that ain`t green needs covered in the reflective material of your choice.....I`m just sayin......

Peace....Freds....:ying:....

Orca will be installed between runs from here on out. Bills are paid, still sitting on two units from last run, and harvests in 4, 5, and 10 weeks. So yeah, time to slip in some upgrades :)
I have been at the mercy of air exchanges for environmental controls due to budget, but will be changing that soon...

Ok, now that I am able to look at my notes, I want to share my light meter readings. Measurements are in Foot Candles, and distance from the bulb was 22" (the distance from the bulb center to the wall, the plants are a couple inches closer). The bulb is a brand new Eye Hortilux 600w on "Super Boost". The length of the bulb, not including mogul is 9".
The highest reading was measured 4" from the mogul at 2700 FC.
I marked on the wall in 1" increments to make note of the readings.
What surprised me was how quickly the FCs dropped above the top of the bulb.
At 3" from the top of the bulb it was 2k FC, and 6" it dropped to 1700.
The FC did not drop to 2k until I got 6" below the bulb, and it was likely almost 12" before it dropped to 1700 below the bottom of the bulb.
Imagine a 45 degree angle from the bottom, and a 33 degree at the top.
What that tells me, is that unless you put a reflector within 6" of the top of the bulb, the available lumens drop dramatically.
One thing to consider that is different from your setup and mine is plant count and levels of plants. Growing trees, my top 12" of canopy may have the fattest buds, but there are large gaps between plants. The vast majority of the yield is the middle 60%. If I was running 4 walls of 16 plants, then the canopy would be full from top to bottom, and the additional lighting would have at least 60% more canopy on the top 12" compared to trees.
In order to get the stacked bulbs to have a continuous overlapping intensity at say 2k, the distance from bulb tip to bulb tip is 9". If the bottom bulb was turned upside down like I have seen HGO do, then the distance is 12" between bulbs. I like to move my bulbs up and down as needed, so that is why I have not done that.
I know that there may be more optimal target intensity, I chose 2k as a good round number lol. If 1700 is adequate, then the distances obviously changes. If each bulb has a vertical range of 18", stacked 9" above the lower bulb, then I have 36" of 2k foot candles. I don't think the return of putting the top bulb blasting the very top of the plant with 2k worth it. I fact 6" below the tops may be more optimal.
If someone has better numbers on spacing I am all ears :) ImageUploadedByTapatalk1371608226.306314.jpg

I had my girlfriend's son all day and put him to work!
Started off by running 4 tubes with 6 ounces each. The second batch is almost done purging, then 2 runs of Chem's Sister. Really excited to see how those runs purge as the color is completely different, and should turn out to be very light colored wax.

Lol! I am not letting another woman to "live" with me until Freedom 45 is completed. She does bring me coffee and whatever else I need :)
I will have plenty of time in 2-3 years to make the woman make me happy, but I am usually the better cook ;)
I save the heavy hitters for evenings, and can smoke my sativa dom strains all day long hehe

Read the entire thread last night. Lots of great ideas and inspiration for the upgrades I want to do in my space.

Maybe I missed it somewhere in my marathon read, but do you have a res/pump for each room or for each loop?

Glad to see some new faces, was beginning to think this thread was only benefiting me lol ;)
Each room has a 30g tank (soon to be upgraded to 60g). Each tank is plumbed with a float valve with a shut off from the Evolution RO. When a tank is empty, I open the valve and in an hour or so it's ready for my Jack's.

I would like to discuss vert vs horizontal growing. I know that some personalities have moved away from vert due to consistent yield issues. I have been discouraged at times, but some perspective really helps.
I have a colleague who does 1k bulbs over 4x8 tables in a warehouse. The best he has done is 2 1/4 per 1k, which is just about 1 gpw. He is happy with 1 1/2 per, but having seen my rooms it has him thinking of doing a test portion in one of his rooms.
I think gpw can be a cruel measurement of a successful grow. My last two stacks, which use 960w per, and only take up 3'6" x 7'6", still yielded 3 pounds. That footprint would only allow a 3x6 table with two 1k bulbs if I was to do horizontal. My last yield was only .65 gpw, but if you compare to the pound per light formula, I did better than 1 1/2 per "bulb". I know I can do better, and my closet may hit 1 gpw if things keep going as they are. My colleague has been doing this for 10 years vs my 2. He also runs cO2 and A/C... 2 pounds per 600 is my future baseline. I will be running heavy yielders going forward, so it will be even easier :)
The OG Kush x UK Cheese is supposed to be a heavy yielder, and we will know in 4 more weeks if she keeps her spot in Alpha. Bobble's Straw DD has already proved herself, and will be a permanent resident in another room. That still leaves me with 3 rooms to rotate my variety.
My Blue Dream is distinctly different than my friend's. his leaves are thin and very sativa dominant, and is likely a 10+ week phenotype, whereas mine is finished no later than 9, and has huge fat fans. It will be interesting to compare the finished product. Even just 2-3 days in flower, they are making me very excited...

My latest feed lines need some tweaking. Currently it's all 1/2" PVC with a 3/4 line from the pump. I want to add some 3/4" PVC up to each tee before the loop. Hopefully that allows for more pressure for the 32 basket stakes. After that it will be upgrading from a 700 gph pump to at least 900, and maybe 1200 to get the basket stakes to actually spray out if the baskets as designed.
