the Hand Watering coco thread

This thread was the first one I read back when I started growing in coco. I found the info here to be very useful. I thought I would share a technique I found to correct ph easier than anything else I have read about. It works best if you are using smart pots (fibrous material much like felt but much heavier) or something similar. But it should work well with any pot with vent hole on the bottom and/or sides.

So you have a plant with a high ph and you want to ph it down, put the pot in a larger water tight container. For reference I use 3 gallon smart pots for my plants. Pour into the water tight container one half gallon of water with ph of 4.5. Lean the water tight container so that the water goes half way up your pot, and allow the 4.5 ph'd water to absorb (approximately 10-15 seconds). Move your pot to other side of the water tight container and repeat. Rotate your pot twice and repeat this until all the sides
of your pot have absorbed it's share of water at 4.5 ph. Remove the pot from the water tight container and set it somewhere it can drain. I put mine in the kitchen sink suspended by wood slats so that the bottom of the pot is level with the top of the sink. That way I can get a large bowl underneath the pot to collect run off. Once the pot is suspended pour in any remained water from the water tight container in the pot, at the point where the center stem of your plant enters the coco. Pour in an additional one half gallon of 4.5 ph'd water starting at that center point trying to evenly distribute this addition water across the top of the pot. I just recently transplanted to these bigger 3 gallon pots from smaller ones, so I concentrate this half gallon in the area where the smaller pot coco would be. Next pour in two more half gallons ph'd at 5.5, one at a time, trying to evenly distribute the water. I usually feed after this, one half gallon. I take two ph readings. Once after most of the water has drained and the pot is just dripping slightly when there is barely enough water to collect to read. And again after feeding, after it has mostly drained as before. If you use metric measurements convert to the nearest most convenient equivalents.

I do this once a week to the plants I am having ph trouble with. I think you will find it easer to correct ph this way. Feedback is welcome.

Gonna have to give this a try! Thanks!

ph 4,5 is actually quite an acidic solution, and might shock the plants.

i allways recomend to water in excess with ph adjusted nute water, since like this the ph is allways in controll :D

peace!

Yea The girls are slowly starting to take a turn for the better. The Mr.Nice and the Fat man don't seem to mind the off PH much, But the BubbleGum Kush and the Substance D are NOT happy about it, probably gonna be stunted a touch.

Ditto.

I'd also add that if you DO find yourself needing a flush, doing so with properly pH'd 1/4 strength nutedwater will take care of the problem easily enough. I ran into trouble when trying to fix pH with plain water in coco - a CEC issue kept me from getting pH straight until 1/4 strength nutes were added and voila! :tiphat:

good to know! I'll try that on my next feed / water

Me too. What did you ph to? And how much water?

hey cronies, been running countless soil/soilless mix for decade or more, I am making the switch to coco.
I'm sure all the info is in here somewhere, but my eyes are hurting scanning thru it all.
I got a few questions i was hoping to get some opinions on if yall dont mind.

I was told to not cut my coco with anything. perlite ew etc. keep it straight. However the lable on coco says to cut with some other type of ammend. such as soil, perlite etc. Any words of advice on that would be nice. Right now im putting my clones in coco with some perlite and ew to get them going but not sure for next transplant.

Also what are the reasons not to use regular nutrients such as gh biobizz line, age old org etc. What about ff liquid nutes? Does that really not work with coco?
Are there any omri listed coco lines of nutes?

I was also told to feed half strength with every watering, and to keep it steady instead of changing nute rates throughout cycle. What is yur humble o on that?

pleez correct me if im wrong but the most important idea here is to : feed regularly, have run off, use cal mag supp., never let it dry out.
Any big ones that im missing?

Great thread ,great minds.... much thanx and more luv to all!!!

Well, I guess everyone is different....but I will tell you that when I added 10% perlite to my last run life sucked towards the middle of flower. They seem to dry out too quickly. So imho I would not amend the coco with anything, leave it be. And you are also correct in not letting them dry out and feeding them proper. I use 1/2 strength nutes when they are small, but not throughout the whole process.
Hope this helps, good luck...one of the easiest grow methods/mediums I have ever used.:tiphat:

Hi all,
just for have some ideas, can you tell me how much solution and how often you would give to plants starting to flower under coltubed 400hps light, into airpot 3L, feed with lucas formula ?

strain is kali mist

thanks for all informations
see you

Hey tgp.. I've never used it, but GH makes an all organic line of nutes that should work fine in coco. Regarding nutes designed for use in soil, I'm not sure how that would work with coco. Many of the nutes developed for soil use are designed to encourage the breakdown of the organic material in the soil to make them accessible by the plants. While coco is an organic substance, it does not have much in the way of nutrients to offer the plants and really should be considered a 'hydro' medium. A lot of people use 'Cana' brand nutes that are specific to coco. I personally use House and Garden and have about a 3 year supply, so I won't be trying any other nute lines for quite some time. Good luck.. you're in the right place for advice.. I do see you on the New England thread quite often and FB is a coco grower of great experience and I'm sure will offer help where needed.

mgk :tiphat:

So, at this time i hand water them with 1L each / day, i flushed them last Monday at the nuts switch (from canna to licas formula), it's just 3 days but it looks as they really like it...

i'll see if they need another flush next Monday

they finally recover i think
i'll post some pictures later
