Kali Mist Grow Journal

This is one hell of a first grow. Looking like a pro. Wait until you smoke the Kali before you decide it's too long to wait - she's a special smoke. Then again, by the looks of it you'll have enough to last you for a while by the end of this run...

haha, thanks! How are your girls looking?

My prescription is for 5g/day though I probably use 2g or less. I doubt I will get more than 1 pound out of this grow, so I should have enough for a few months, yeah!

Thanks for asking. They're doing fine so far, though they're just in 1gal pots of ProMix and crowded together with other strains in a micro cab under cheaper chinese LEDs (probably about 170-180 watts total including screw-in warm white and cool white supplements) and trained rather than scrogged, so my yield really won't compare. They're not quite as frosty as yours yet either, but they're about a week behind so hopefully they'll catch up some. I don't post pics of current grows (irrational paranoia, I know), but I'll try to throw some up when I'm done for comparison.

Awesome dude. Makes me want to pop some F2's of 90's stock that I have in the fridge. Loving the newest panoramic style picture too.

It's like a forest of buds! It's a nice sight. Since I'm discovering all of this for the first time, it's been a real treat to watch them grow and see them change.

Any chance the taller branches (like the ones on the left) could snap as the buds become bigger? Should I be looking to support them? I have Rhino Skin in my nute schedule, which is supposed to solidify the stems, but I am still wondering.

Nah, Kali's stems are pretty sturdy, I think she should be fine. Looking great. Very homogeneous - they look exactly the same as mine. Props to Serious too.

just some advice

-why the leds? You seem to have enough money for a good 600 or 1000 hps with ventilation. If you're going to grow something like kali mist which is at least 14 weeks flowering (takes 4-6 weeks to show sex) you shouldn't use something with slow growth such as leds.

I went with two SS400W for a few reasons. Theoritically it's 800w worth of LED but they only draw 600w. It is equivalent to a 600HPS power wise, but the penetration isn't the same, so I went with a scrog and light mover to address the lack of penetration and smaller footprint. The LED are easier to cool, are more efficient since all the power is used to generate light in the spectrum you want exactly, and they last longer. LED are also the future, and I wanted to test the new technology myself. With a single icebox I can run a sealed tent, which reduces smell and saves CO2. I would have needed an additional icebox and fan if I had went with HPS (would still have been cheaper though, but it's more logistics). The included UVB is nice too, though it can be supplemented easily with HPS as well.

PAR is PAR, so long the spectrum is adequate. Whether HPS or LED, if you can work around penetration and footprint issues (easily done nowadays), there's no such thing as "slow growth LED." It looks like you may need to read up more on the properties of light, including spectrum and physics.

Sorry for crappy quality, don't have time to take stack exposures today, and I don't even have my macro rail with me, I wasn't expecting to take those pics for another 4 weeks.

First pic is 1:1 magnification, second is 1:3.5

What type of camera are you using? The pics look amazing!

Do you take the plants out before you take the pictures?
Change Lighting?
Use Flash?

once you go 1000 hps you don't go back, nothing less :p

I've never seen anything impressive let alone better when it's grown with LEDS...

LEDS imo are in between cfl/t5 and hps

The light mover and scrog to compensate for penetration...do you have any proof of this or is this your own idea?

In less than a year you'll have ordered an HPS :p

I already have ordered a 1000HPS. Like you say, HPS is proven technology. It works. It's also much cheaper than LED (50% in fact). So for bigger grows, LED is still impractical.

However...

LED is the future, and I wanted to test it for myself. This grow was a test grow, to learn the ropes. My Rx gives me 25 plants to grow, so I'll be running a perpetual grow with two 1000HPS for flower by August. I went with HPS simply because it was so much cheaper.

I'm not sure what you mean by proof? Light movers can increase yield by 10-20% on their own according to Ed Rosenthal's textbook (4th edition, p. 128). CaliLight has released spectrorad readings of their light, with NIST report if you ask for it. It's just a fact a scrog makes better use of the light especially if they have lower penetration, and the light mover ensures the light is evenly distributed, so footprint becomes less of an issue when designing your room.

It will take years before LED can effectively replace 1000HID. It doesn't mean they're not useful in certain applications though ;)

Pentax K5

The plants stay where they are, they're scrog'd so I couldn't move them even if I wanted to.

I've sometimes used strobes, most of the time I use an on-camera speedlight with a diffusing mod of some sort, or I bounce it off the ceiling.

Thank you for the info.
I will be watching to see how the Kali treats you!

Day 44, so technically, almost 50% through. (tomorrow I'll be at the halfway mark). I don't know what the fuck I was thinking picking a 90 day flower cycle strain for my first grow. Not the smartest choice either, but OH WELL.

Really nothing exciting going on. It's getting smellier, plants are stickier, trichs are pretty much visible everywhere.

I'm pretty pissed I burned the plants, I was KO because of a health complication for a few days. I drained and brought PPM back down to their comfortable 850-900 level and they're recuperated since then. Hopefully my yield won't be affected too much. I'm really annoyed PPM are not automated in my grow setup... OGsensor was suppose to come up with an automated system but never heard anything from them.

PPM and pH are actually the only two things that aren't automatically controlled in this grow.

In any case, things are shaping up. This 7 inches bud is one of the great looking ones.

looking good frank, and hope ure health is returning buddy.

Everything looking well mate.
I havent been ph'ing, but all seems well. Going to get myself a ph pen next grow, all being safe and well.

Outta curiousity, which ppm scale are u using? and whats the ec of ure food? (ppm converted to ec)

Ive not looked into ppm, as from what ive read, their is two different conversion rates depending on equipment. Just wondering what ppm conversion u are using m8. Im using micro seimens/ec pen.

Loving the pics as usual, so hats off, and keep up the great work.

Wishing you a safe month ahead mate.
Stay healthy.

Peace

Hey man, thanks for stopping by.

My Hanna PPM meter uses the US conversion of 1.0EC = 500 PPM

I keep my PPM between 800-900.
