Rockwool Trees

Both kinds are horticultural grade granulate absorbent, the absorbent kind is greyish-green (as in JDM's pics), the non-absorbent that I use (grodan as well) is yellow-greenish. I'll take a pic of the mixed medium later today.

Would you be growing huge trees anyways (even if plant number would not be a concern)? I am talking SOG and quicker turnaround/ less steps to be perpetual.

I am planning something similar right now, but I am used to growing in Aero/NFT fence poles, and it's my favorite. The problem is that that requires a ton of seeds.

Any advice?

find a mom, make clones.

or do med-man tables or troughs.

djm method is awesome though. i prefer less plants. its why my tables have 15 per 4x8

Gonna add something here hope ya dont mind don juan...

TEST YOUR RUNOFF!! lol

just tested mine for the first time, end week 2 flowering. It was 5.1ph and 2100ppm of gh!

had 775ppm going in first week, 850ppm going in the second week. PH was always 5.5 or higher(i think but ph pens all suck).

thanks for the pump don juan! lol you made that flush possible..haha

DJM - you're awesome. Thanks for the 10 pages of wisdom.
I always wanted to grow monsters, but my basement ceiling was against it.
Now with a help of a small warehouse - this just might become a reality

I like your methods, but I find them hard to replicate - seems like there are too many custom things involved
- you need just the right timing for watering
- salt buildup requires very close monitoring

I was hoping to leave those problems behind, once I moved from soil to aero, but your pictures and stories suggest otherwise. I mean wow

don juan.. thanks again

I have a couple clones in 1 gal pots of floc.. after 3 days still wet.. do you water em everyday when they just start out? seems like they could go over a week before drying

That's very nice. And thanks for all of the clarifications. I think Ill do my next tree in rockwool, had never considered that. I'm doing drain to waste in hydroton now, and it's working fine, but there is lots of waste. Good work.

And please comment why did you select those strains and not others.
If you had to do it all over again, which strain would you try/repeat?
What about commercially available seeds (I couldn't find seeds of your top producing strains) - any suggestions? Headband maybe?..
What else grows like Christmas trees and glistens like diamonds?
I spent all day researching today, but still not sure what would do

P.S. With "Black's Haze" are you referring to Black Label Nevilles Haze or is this a totally different beast?

Hi. Great setup. I have a couple of questions.
You mentioned your looking into blumats. Do you or does anyone know if the blumats will work in the wool? Any idea why they wouldn't?

>my goal is to maximize my yield per light and yield per sq foot, not my yield per plant..my last run i pulled over 2 pounds per plant/light, the largest was an ounce shy of 2.5..if i did vert i could get larger plants, but i would need twice the space and my average yield per light would drop..i see few vert growers get over 2 pounds per light and with this system id say 2.5 is more expected when done 100%, and using half the space,if i was limited to a hand full of plants and needed to maximize my yield per plant i would definitely go vert but im more than happy with the results im getting horizontally

I am not sure I understand this. I am limited by plant count so I run vert with basically a plant per light which is essentially what your doing and I'm trying to max yield per light but also per plant. What exactly is the difference compared to a vert setup with a plant per 5x5 space? Your plants look about that big.
Your yield is awesome what do you mostly attribute this to? Vegging for 3 months?

Cheers

Great thread Don. I saw the name and I also thought of Carlos Castenada. Been quite a few years since those have been read. I used to grow vert trees in 5gl hydroton buckets recirc. I too tried the rcdwc with mixed success. I'm now using a 80/20 hydroton/coco mix dtw. It's working decently but I would love to get back to be able to recirculate my nutes. I believe you have been actually doing dtw but are going to be doing recirculating on your next run. When I did hydroton buckets I believe I topped off nutes to keep the salt levels in the desired range and then at the end of the week I would flush with a low level solution probably 200ppm. Do you think this would work in this set up? I'm a few weeks out from my next round and I think I'm going to give the rockwool a go.
