can anyone tell me if the 50w per sq ft rule is going off actual output wattage or chipset wattage? i ask in about every thread but it gets lost in the shuffle lol

Actually, I think that the 50w/sq ft rule came about for HID lighting. From what I've been able to piece together, it is more like 30w/sq ft for LEDs, and that would refer to actual output. Chipset wattage means virtually nothing - they can be underdriven or overdriven to the point that the figure is completely meaningless.

just looked up those NorthernLeitz on ebay...

3 watt diodes and they are truthful about their actual draw...

thanks for the heads-up...

so how about this question then.

How many RUNNING WATTS is needed per sqft when running LEDs?

I just grow with the panels, I don't go into the specs behind them BUT it looks like plenty here do SO what are the thoughts on it?

Would larger panels with more spread out diodes make more sense if the spectrum being put off with the LEDs is so efficient the wattage per sqft could be reduced from the common 50-100 down to a 25-50 range?

.....

i think 50 w/sq ft is plenty.
i prefer the diodes as spread out as possible, so i swapped one 3W fixture for two 1W fixtures that pretty much fill the top of the cab.
the whole area is in the sweet spot, perfect for scrog as rives has already pointed out.

Now what about with LEDs having the ability to give the exact light it needs, couldn't we lessen the watts per sqft and end up with an even higher gpw overall and should still produce solid results?

I just wonder where the efficiency of leds versus hps comes into play when it comes to watts per sqft. It isn't something I ever cared about with hps because I just crammed in as much light as I could keep cool lol.

my leaves are straight praying to the lights after only 1 day. to keep it fair i will gladly purchase another panel in the same price range and wattage and do a side by side when i get back from vacation. my guess is i will spend the extra 100$ a panel than the cheap shit ebay LED's and have better results through him.

thats not to say you cant fine tune an LED from ali with a badass spectrum but i wouldnt even know what spectrum to order. thats why i pay him to do it for me lol. plus not having to deal with the 90$ shipping from china is cool too. i would only save like 40$ a panel if i ordered from ali.

Big Sky,

Here is a very good thread on led grow light science by some of the pioneers. ( the people I look up to anyway!)
https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=184932&highlight=pragmatic+application

Let us know when you are done reading it.

Thanks......

wow that takes me WAYYY back

great find and worth going over for anyone interested in LED research. Wow many years ago we had some killer discussions, well maybe they were more arguments BUT great times none the less

Hey you could use those for under canopy lighting.

As soon as it warms up i am switchin the bottom ones out. The added warmth is helping during the winter. Im sure once i get my next led unit the temps will be back on check an i can ditch the cfls. Im gonna add a light mover too possibly if all goes well.

Thanx tenthirty.

im in for the LED grow off!! ive got some POG plants and AK that i think will rock it yield wise. im thinking SOG in solo cups single cola shit storm bottom irrigated in a tray for simplicity.

i know there are threads on this Q, but i was wondering if any of you guys have used bloombastic?? my buddy that worked in the CO dispensaries said it was the shit. he said out of all the people he met up there he only truly consider one guy he met a "master grower" and that guy swore by it. any thoughts?

You know, I struggled with nutes for a very long time.

What I have found, is that a simple feeding schedule seems to provide the best results.
