FWIW,

NL is a capitate sessile wasteland, but does the trick day after day - old faithful. It's one of the most homogeneous lines I've ever seen. You have tall skinny and short fat, the latter branchier and better yielding. Juniper notes to a sweet bubblegum type flavor, but all falling distinctly under the NL umbrella, unmistakable. The jagged sharp leaf serrations are a dead givaway and very much fixed in the line. The real PNW NL is alive and well in my neighbors freezer, to be sprouted 2 days before the full moon here on the 15th.

In all of the online postings I've seen over the years from Sensi's to Doc A's, the best representation of the real thing I've seen seems to be this NL5 out of Canada, I forget the name of the company though. -T

beetlejuicefor me it was like a rich Evergreen or Juniper Pine

It is curious as I get to see plenty of broken down cartel packs around here and I would say that is the most common aroma I get from them (if I can detect anything that is) other than what results from poor handling and storing. This gives me a clue as to how widespread dutch genes are in Mexico but also how NL is in just about everything dutch.

Redneck...yea man its almost harder to isolate from Dutch versions...not impossible just a lil more mixed and re-acclimated....those tones tho def always bring me to NL lines tho...from the first time I smoked um till modern day even..

I lost my NL5 a while ago....it was from the bcsc selection and I did pass her round to folk in Co, Cali and Oregn..but I think they thought it was to mercial..you can't just run NL...you run the Hell outa NL..it was built for it IMO...

while enjoying some shiva shanti II buds last night i was thinking some more about this thread and realized that there is way too much silver going on in the afghan gene pool to link nl#5s silver hue to the thais...

the old garlic bud afghan is quite silver,it is a prime example of a silver pheno... then tom hills deep chunk came to my mind - another prime example of silver cannabis, so yeah it's a long stretch to say the silver in the nl#5 is due to its thai-heritage - why look so far when the silver is so near?

nevertheless i have no doubt that there is a thai or some other sativa in the nl#5 makeup, hidden well beneath its indica effect and taste but its there...

[According to *eedfinder.eu:]

All together, there is more than only one original Northern Light line:

* NL #1: Is definitely an Afghani type indica inbred line.
* NL #2: Is a mystery, probably a mostly indica one.
* NL #5: Is the famous clone-only by Neville. The lineage is unknown - some people say its a Thai x Indica, than backcrossed to the Indica - but this is only pure speculation!
Strain Lineage / Genealogy / Family Tree
Northern Lights »»» Afghanistan Indica Probably
Afghanistan Indica Probably »»» Indica

I remember NL#5 being available in seed form for the longest time. Back when seed packs started at better than $150.... Early 90's or so... Probably long after it's introduction to the cannabis world...

OG Kush x Northern Lights.. both clones picked up in cali in 02 .. and grown together .. and then made into a fem cross. that turned out to be one wierd smelling plant. my favorite smell and taste i only keep for headsmoke.. its incredibly potent also.

In response to the OP, here is my NL at different stages. These are not all from the same run as I have other strains I like but always keep an NL mom.

She is easy to grow, stays short and stout and requires minimal staking and support. A great robust plant. I have seen her ready at anywhere from 55 to 65 days depending on the conditions.

She is a great yielder, has a piny smell, not too that overly overpowering. The high is for sure 70%+ Indica influenced but not too locking. She is fine smoke during the day in moderation but can lock me up for sure with non measured dosing.

I like this cut for many reasons. She is easy to clone, roots like no others I have tried, grows and trains well, yields are above average for sure.

The high I would rate at 80% compared to some of the others, and the taste/smell is a bit bland but by no means poor; just don't expect a kush or sour d type of aroma out of this one. I have shared her with many and nobody has yet been disappointed. Her genetics are spread throughout numerous modern cannabis for a reason. She really is an indoor wonder.

Man, I remember hearing story after story about this mythical strain when I first started smoking like 13 years ago. Rumor had it that it was grown outdoors in Alaska, and that's why it was so strong. Pssshhh, what did you expect from 14 year old boys?

Was good to read through this thread and the varying opinions and research on its lineage. I just ordered some NL seeds from Nirvana, so it will feel good to be growing a bit of history lol (even if it's not the original NL)!

lol...

lol...

I also grew Nirvana's NLxBig Bud; Big Buds? Hell it grew no buds.
That's right, it didn't grow buds. While all the other strains around it were budding along nicely it simply didn't grow buds, none. Just the odd preflower.
And yet they were the most vigorous plants with huge fan leaves, but they just didn't grow buds for some reason. Something wrong there somewhere.

that sux i had the dame experience with a Nevilles Haze from greenhouse, if it werent for the ssh, an arjans haze 1, i woulda been pissed... i think i ended up giving that plant away for a reveg...

Mr Mustard...haha as long as its good yes?...we are not numbers my friend...we are free men...as should our Plants be...gl with that...

well done Astro...well done...

laugh it up fuzz balls...cause its not what it may appear,,,,
Bliss my ass....its growin...and growin is intuitive and natural..
seein allot of talk...no walk.....
Time to walk this dog...
Both plant Sensi `95 NL inline -
Female thrown out of pH range and fed low with a mixed formula...
Male - did not want to risk throwing him out so I over dosed him..
Same line...
Exact Same plants shown earlier.....ya with me here?....
Just to waist the time Im going to Redial these Plants...flip them and show folks what their missing out on...Simple enough....Thai...geneteic....whatever ya wana believe..
Im not even believing in my work..
I know this line like the back of my own hand and its so easy to manipulate its just what it is...Any..Any NL experienced grower knows what Im saying..hell any grower should be getting the idea right now and if your not than this door is already closed to you..
and If so then kewl to....
Its a insult to the genetics, the work, and the whole of the vibe that should be Cannabis and what was one of the inital indicas of All time...truly sad and completely Unconfirmed...only speculatory....
personally I will never grow a variety from a Breeder or Grower who Only claims to "Know it".....thats bs in a bag...
I dont even know for sure, but I have no problem showing it...
Bliss my ass....this is all bs so far IMO...
see ya on the Flip side folks...bout 10-12wks I'd say..
I am clearly broken...
so time for the Sucker Punch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS5gr3T2gPI

Ok if ya love the NLs I'll show a few more pics and some are as dated as I got...These date back to 2002...
all same lines...matter fact the room with all the lil pups are the 6th or 8th gen cut of the mother NL5 selection we had...and the mom room flowerin next to it...
Started doc'n these varieties in the early 90s so I got some wild lookin mommas but these are what I'd say are more standard NL's.....
But I have a few certain old ass NL pics that really show somethin unique...like that Old Cali-NL shown earlier...thats a special lady and I'd like to see folks with her..i believe she's still out there but who knows....only by workin together will we ever get anywhere on this,...but maybe someday when it gets real again...
so want to see them?....I gata dig out a old hd,
so lets see some interest...but for now heres another set of pics from soils to dwc to hydros...All NLs...and mainly the NL5 as we knew her..
these images are my own work, doc's and personal grows of these plants...Images are not avail anywhere else and backed up for the security of their public worth....Please don't use any of my images...but enjoy them...thank you....
keep rollin

Have grown and are currently growing out Nirvana's Northern Lights and love it mainly because of how reliable it is, because of this thread i have searched the net for NL #5 with no luck, only crosses of it seem to be available.. can someone on here tell me their favourite that is available, like i said i only have experience with nirvana's, there's a few others around but with the price of some of them i don't want to spend this much on a "test", or is nirvana's a pretty good representation of the strain?
