I'm undecided about selling or keeping it. The pre-screen grade ranges from an 8.5 all the way to a 9.4 from a variety of folks.
Not sure where it will fall, my opinion is that it's at least a solid 9.2.
At a 9.8 that comic is valued at about 9K.
At a 9.6 it's valued at about 4K.
At 9.4 about 3K.
At 9.2 about $1700.00
At 9.0 it's clocking in around $1300.00
So grading is essential for both valuation and preservation, especially of a key bronze age issue. It's definitely getting sent for a pressing and possible surface cleaning. I'll get my grade bump and then it goes off for slabbin. I'm keepin' my fingers crossed for a 9.4 evaluation.
Grading is essential if you're going to sell a high grade key like that I agree, but for preservation, full back, mylar, and a top loader will keep it just as well as having it slabbed IMO.
I buy all the big keys graded, but I crack them out as soon I get them home. I like CGC for resto detection, but I like to touch, smell, and read my books, so no slabs for me.
Yeah if that thing comes back a universal 9.4 you will be sitting pretty.
i'm looking at an amazing spiderman 64 penned by johnny romita (sr), as well as 66, 63 and 62 (medusa, mmm), silver surfer 18 by kirby, batman in detective 376 drawn by bob kane, a great submariner vs iron man with the opening pages by gene colan, the rest by kirby after colan got the flu (cover missing tho'), and my favourite kirbys, captain america 107, 108 and the best, 109. all handled but no rips or even dog ears. an ancient stash of mine. they need a good home. any suggestions? im serious.
oh, and sgt. rock, the unknown soldier, other joe kubert stuff (loved him, rip this past year), superman, lots of stuff, some covers off some excellent shape.

They dropped the ball with Heavy Metal for sure. It's been decades and only 2 animated movies? I remember watchin the first flick as a kid and I was hungry for more....collected the mag as well. Would love to see some full on sci-fi/fantasy with a heaping of nudity and sadism!!!

Anus-Clenching Adventure with Harold Hedd, aka Harold Hedd #2, came out in September of 1973, and is generally considered the best Canadian underground comic from the golden era. Without question, it's one of my all-time favorite undergrounds. It's one long Harold Hedd story, "Wings Over Tijuana," a drug-smuggling adventure which is brilliantly written and illustrated. In a complex plot, Hedd and his cousin Elmo end up flying a 1942 WW2 bomber plane loaded with pot from Mexico to British Columbia; a dangerous mission with unexpected consequences.
Rand Holmes never tried to disguise his affection (or usage) of marijuana in his life or in his comics, and Harold Hedd #2 is a prime example of his passion for pot. But even if you don't indulge in the magical weed, you are sure to find enjoyment in this rollicking adventure, which is cinematic in scope and provides a fine synopsis for a great buddy flick.

Harold Hedd deserves to be on this page as well, couldn't include RMS's pic (along with another prison pit cover) because I guess a URL to cdisplay counts as an IMG attachment..

I've got a .cbr viewer called "comical". Works great, now I practically never read the raw comics....just seal 'em up or slab them....and I can enjoy the digital format.
Every time I purchase an older comic especially I put the .cbr version of the comic (if I can find it online via torrent) in that same folder for future viewing/reference.
Sorry I've been away from this thread...things have been a bit crazy. Nonetheless, I've been busy scooping up some rather hot titles that have been exploding on the modern comic book scene:

Thief of Thieves
Saga
PP tops that list however, with raw versions of the first print going for $100-200+ online and slabbed versions of the same going for $300-500+. There's talk of the BBC doing a live action version with a motion action comic to precede the show. That type of hype has driven the speculation market into a tizzy.
Thief of Thieves is another title by that guy that brought us The Walking Dead. If you've been following the pricing on Walking Dead #1 first print...you'll see that it's way over $2000 in most cases.....so folks are looking for that "next big win"....and with news of a television show in development...prices are spiking. Picked up a TOT #1 for about $200 slabbed 9.8 CGC. Probably will go skyward in pricing when the show is a bit closer to finish.
Saga has been touted as "an adult version of star wars" or "star wars for perverts". That came down right from the writers...LOL. It's been on the scene for awhile, but runs of the comic raw are going for around $200....with retail incentive prices topping $400+ for issue #1. If they're slabbed the pricing just goes upwards from there.
If you can find yourself any of these comics in first print, you're doing yourself a favor. They're highly investable ATM.
Oooh, one other "about to be a show" comic: The Sixth Gun, which was previously in development over at SyFy...but recently just got picked up as a pilot for NBC. Not surprisingly, within moments of that announcement.....a first print #1 went for $29 BIN on Ebay and a double set of #1 first print and the FCBD version of the same went for $59 BIN. I was about to drop the hammer on both of them and they were bought out right from under me.....congrats to the SOB that pulled that Houdini off. Next time I'm gonna have to work out my mouse finger before I hit Ebay.

Purportedly in development at Showtime. Last slab 9.8 CGC just sold for $799. I picked mine up a few days ago for $635. You can practically forget finding a raw in any quality...smart folks have snapped these suckers up and have submitted them for grading.
You can see how the pricing has spiked.
Practically any of the new releases from Image comics has done the same dance: there's alot of interest in the oddball material, then there's talk of a show, then the speculators come out to play and the playing field gets super hot. People are definitely looking for the next "Walking Dead" to occur....and the prices are skyrocketing....almost every couple of days there's a hike in $...and increased scarcity.
